Stout started the game well and behind Webb and Heisler led 11-4 after the first 5-6 minutes.  But WW responded with a put back basket by Vernon and a three-pointer by reserve Cory Brezovar and after the teams traded baskets for a few minutes Myles McKay drilled a three-pointer to ignite a 16-4 WW run to close the half up 13, 39-26.    WW steadily built the lead in the second half in part with strong offensive rebounding until it was 20 with a little over 8 1/2 minutes to go.  However Stout wasn't quite finished off.  Miles Webb and Eric Hostetter heated up from beyond the arch and Eric Heiser got three the hard way as the BlueDevil were able to cut the lead to 8 with 1:30 remaining and 7 with :39 to go.  But Kevin Koski made 1 of two from the line and McKay went 4-4 to snuff out any hopes of the upset.

Offensive rebounding was a huge factor in the outcome.  WW won that battle 18-6 and overall outrebounded Stout 40-18.  The put back baskets helped offset Stout's 11-25 three-point shooting.

McKay led the way with 22 points and also pulled down 7 rebounds.  Vernon was very difficult for Stout to handle.  He finished with 19 points, 13 rebounds including 9 on the offensive end.   Billy Kolinski ended up with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.  Kevin Koski pulled down 8 boards and led the team with 5 assists.

Superior did stay in Oshkosh Saturday and Sunday night.

So did Superior go straight to Whitewater for Wednesday? That's a big road trip bill, but well worth it. Congrats to the Jackets!

Yes,  they are going straight to whitewater.  They more they win, the more class they miss!

Wow.  That's like a D-I NCAA Tournament trip.

I voted for Jake Smith.  He hit a BIG TIME 3 if I'm not mistaken to give Superior the final lead.  Pretty big game out of the frosh.

Actually his final three cut Oshkosh's lead from four down to one.....  Superior took the lead on two Dan Culy free throws.

You're right.  I just remember watching the live stats and thinking, "WOW!  That is a BIG shot from a frosh!"

Another big thing about Tony Mane's performance, which I don't believe anyone mentioned, is that he scored 31 of his 37 points after halftime. (27 in the 2nd half & 4 in OT).  Great effort, too bad it came up short.

Question for you guys.  Wondering what your opinion is on officiating in the post season.  Do you agree with the long time explanation that they should call less because they want the players to decide the game or do you want things called the way they have been all season?  I should say I thought the refs were very consistent at SP last night.  I've got my opinion but I'd like to see what others think about the subject.

Old School,

Superior did stay in Oshkosh Saturday and Sunday night.

They left Superior on Saturday morning for a game at Oshkosh (or do they go Friday night?) and they packed for two or three days?  Were they planning on staying over somewhere no matter what?

I could understand this...but that means when they left Saturday, they packed for Saturday night, Sunday night, Monday night, Tuesday night and Wednesday night?  Wow.  Surely they aren't packed up through Saturday?

I thought about how the team would justify this, but I figure they would have likely missed Monday and Wednesday, no matter what. That puts them on six- or longer hours on the bus on game days. Missing Tuesday avoids that.  And then I compare that to baseball and softball, both of which take off for about two weeks at the beginning of the season to play tournaments in Florida. Depending on when spring break occurs for the school, a lot of people are missing a lot of classes. A couple of years ago, the UWS women's basketball team spent first semester finals week in Hawaii.

I talked to one instructor who said she has to provide weekly (I think she said weekly) reports to Buchanan on his players. I don't think he takes school lightly, and it's reassuring that he's as committed to a student's education as he is to creating a decent team.

Next year, they have to work harder at getting higher seeds so these trips can be some other teams' problems.

A lot of parents were probably out picking up six-packs of underwear and one or two outfits--slacks, shirts, socks, shoes. I don't know how the team dresses for away games, but if they have to wear nice clothes, they'd have one set. Stay at Super 8 and the free laundry takes care of the rotation of clothes. Plus, maybe the team gets a deal for volume. They should at least qualify for a state rate.

It sounded as though there was a decent contingent of Superior people in Oshkosh. Anyone have any ideas on that?

Probably about the same number of Sup fans in Oshkosh as there would have been UWO fans in Superior. My guess would be maybe 30 parent-age Sup folks. Didn't notice many (any?) UWS students in the crowd of 450. Then again I wasn't really paying attention to that.

I did notice a handful of excited Sup parents (probably) get on their feet and cheer during the last couple of minutes. People who make any noise or movement tend to stick out at Kolf .
