The Pioneers have a nice little weekend planned.  First, tomorrow evening they head to Rock Island to scrimmage against Augustana, then head for Peoria to play their exhibition game against Bradley University.  Maybe Bed, Bath, & Beyond...I don't know if they'll have time though! ;D

I personally will not be making either trip, as I am heading northeast for the weekend which will end on Saturday catching the UWO-UWP football game, and Oshkosh nightlife.

UW-Platteville wins both varsity halves tonight, 41-37 and 36-32. Augie wins JV 12 minute period. I think it was 19-15.

Both teams shot extremely well in the first half (.615 for both) and cooled off considerably in the second half. Curt Hanson (17) and Jeff Skemp (19) led UWP with Hanson doing almost all of his damage in the first half (4 3's) and Skemp picking it up in the second.

Augie had four in double figures with Justin Bertrand leading the way with 17 (8-8 from the field). Alex Washington had 11 and Matt Pelton and Jordan Delp had 10 each. Bryant Voiles had 9 and Chandlor Collins 8. Brett Wessels and Jeff Becker didn't play.

A good test for both teams and Skemp gave Augie a comparable matchup to what they'll see from Ruch and Wiele in CCIW play.

Gives me hope that he's playing.

Tomorrow is the Pointers' Purple/Gold game.  Last year's roster is still up.

Have an extra burgher or three for me tomorrow night! Or a brat or two...

How does the new floor look?

I have a reliable source in Stevens Point that says Pete Rortvedt and Khalifa El-Amin are in fact playing. No Ross Rortvedt or Drew Jackson or the blonde kid from kaukana.

Scott Hoelzel...that's too bad.  He was a nice little spark off the bench.

I liked Drew off the bench too.  He was very athletic and quick.  I was always excited when he came off the bench.  Ross not coming back is a big blow.  He was a great shooter and a very solid defender.

The silver lining is that Pete and El Amin are coming back.  I hope to make the purple gold game tomorrow.

That stinks about Hoelzl and Ross Rortvedt...  Scotty really provided a spark and I thought he had the potential to be really good by his senior year... and I think he would have been very solid this year.  Heck, he showed signs last year of breaking through, too.

It's going to be interesting to see what we get from UWSP this year.  They've got experience... but they may not have the RIGHT manpower to make a run at the conference and a deep trip in the NCAA's.  But who knows... they've made it TO the NCAA tournament the last two years and they've been tops in the country in several statistical categories that will help teams not to LOSE games.

Pointers Purple - Gold game won by Gold by 10.  Best players on the Purple were Nick Krull who showed lots of desire going to the bucket and Ben Schumacher who nailed 5 3ptrs and ended with 20 points on the day. For the Gold team Matt Moses had a number of steals and led the way with 18 and Pete Rortvedt, El Amin and Beamish all in double figures as well. Off shooting nite for the Gold, but not Schumacher as he hit 5 of 6 treys. There were only 12 players suited up so it was 6 vs 6.

Players missing the game: Louis Hurd is out for a couple of weeks with a stress fracture of his right leg; Jared Jenkins was catching the game winning pass vs EC; Mike Griffin was MIA due to a family illness.

Players gone: (but in the crowd) Scott Hoelzel and Greg Knox, both of whom quit for unknown reasons. Ross Rortvedt is apparently concentrating on school work and putting in extra time at the local hospital looking to get into med school. Drew Jackson apparently had issues and Kieran Weed left the school for academic reasons.

Besides 6'9" Schumacher the Pointers also added height in 6'8" Jordan Brezinski from Muskego and 6'4" Brock Roberts (reminds me physically of Steve Hicklin - who was in the crowd next to Jon Krull)

I feel just like a gossip columnist, maybe I should quit  ::) ;D

frodotwo -
Thanks for the Pointer update, although as a Blugold, I didn't need the reminder about Jared Jenkins today. Ha.

How many burgers did you eat? (That was my favorite part about following the Pointers men's hoop teams the many years I lived there - when they made it a burger/brat feed before the intrasquad game to start the season...)

Can anyone tell me the whereabouts of Dan Tillema?  He left UM-Duluth at semester last season and enrolled at Oshkosh.  I was told that he had all intentions of playing basketball there.  Is he still in school?  If so, why the change of heart playing ball?

Thanks LaXguy.  Looks like La Crosse had ample chances to win that game!  With 17 TO's and 8 missed free throws, if a couple of balls bounced their way, they could have won.

WOW!  Even if that doesn't continue, that's a stunner!  Do you know how Bradley is forecast to do this year?

Mr. Ypsi

I just checked the MVC website, and that is one IMPRESSIVE win!  Bradley is picked for 5th (of 10) for a solidly mid-major D1 conference (they were the runners-up in last year's NIT).  While the Braves lost a lot, they do have two returners who were rated among the top 9 in the pre-season all-conference selections.

Cheers to UWP! ;)

Greek Tragedy

Nice write up Frodo.  Schumacher is 6'9" and launching 3s, hey?  Was he inside too?  I'd like to see that from our big man.  I think Matt Moses is in for a big year.  Louis Hurd is a solid player and someone will need to step in for him while he's out.  I didn't hear anything about Wotachek.  I wish the Pointer football team well, but I'm a selfish basketball fan and what Jared Jenkins on the hardwood ASAP! lol.  Good luck to Ross and schooling.  Your comment about Drew Jackson "having issues" is kind of funny and can be taking in a number of different ways, mostly humorous!  Did Brezinski play and what is Roberts doing?  You said he was in the crowd.  Either or both greyshirting?
