I was in the Nicholas Suite with other Warhawk fans tonight....McKay and Vernon had nice games...though McKay missed a couple of layups late in the game....Goodwin was shut down in the second half....the Warhawks played very tough defense and forced many fouls on the Badgers...the Badgers pulled away when they started to use their size...the Badgers were dominant on the offensive board in the second half...in the first half the Badgers were content to play a perimeter game with the Warhawks, but that was not so productive for the Badgers

Looking forward to the Warhawk season, I hope they get good production from their big men to complement the play of McKay and Goodwin

I was there as well and that's pretty much the way I saw it.  We hung with them for 34 minutes or so but just couldn't keep them off the offensive boards down the stretch.   Also they kicked their defense up a notch and we were forcing some shots.

All in all though it was a great experience for our players and fans.

Now it's time to focus on the season opener against Wisconsin Lutheran this Saturday.  Unfortunately it's bowling Saturday for me and I'll miss it.  :-(

The Madison media were quite impressed with the Warhawks...on the radio and TV they were being called "scrappy" and "well coached"....however, one television reporter said that winning the game would have made the Warhawks' season....I would imagine a conference title and a national championship would mean much more to them!

Barry Alvarez walked by the Nicholas Suite before the game...I would liked to have thanked him for his generosity towards the football team...letting them practice in the indoor practice facility during their playoff runs

Also, I thought it was very nice that all of the Warhawk players were announced to the crowd before the game

Greek Tragedy

It seems whenever a "lesser" opponent hangs with a big boy, we're called "scrappy"...Why can't we just a be good program??!!  lol :-)

I heard the second half on the radio and was SHOCKED that we were only down by three at half, not so much a surprise but all things considered, it was an exhibition and I'm sure that the Badgers might not have been giving it their "all"....but conditioning could have been a key because from what I heard on the show is that the hawks started wearing down and missing some shots and Goodwin was short on a few threes, and so was McKay...but my impressions of PU beating Bradley, WW hanging with the Badgers and all, it could be a great year for the WIAC, one of the best in the past few years if all the pre-season stuff hangs true.

One of the few years also where a lot of players for UWW hung around and didn't quit as well.  Not a lot of turnover could mean a lot of experience.  I might just have to make it to a few more games this year, but could be tough, had to give up Charter so can't watch them on local t.v....

This is the thing that really gets to me about these games...  The D-I people (or some?  Most?)  are so self-absorbed that they think a game that does not count means more to those D-III folks than the essentially meaningless season (their view, not mine, of course).  This is the implication of a statement like the one above, and it really ticks me off... it is really a lazy point of view and a comfortable point of view for them... it allows them to keep their elitist views and absolutely downplays anything credible about D-III.

What is striking to me is that even in the case of Bradley, when someone on the Bradley fan site stated that UWP would do well in the MVC, they were pretty much ripped apart.

The Valley is in BIG trouble and does not deserve anything more than the automatic bid if Wisconsin-Platteville finishes in the top half of our conference!

Very few people noted that Platte played fundamentally better... If nothing else, look at free throws.  Platteville got to the line more (26 vs 20) and made MANY more (23 vs 10).  That means that, essentially, Bradley outplayed Platteville by 10 points on the floor.  This came from being more athletic, to be true, but Platteville actually shot better... how can one team truly be better if they don't run their system as well, if they are not fundamentally as strong, and if what system they do run, they don't execute?

Now, I understand that this is just one game... and perhaps (maybe likely?) Platteville was much more fired up than Bradley... but when it gets down to it, Platte still did win the game... and they're still 0-0.

Likewise, getting back to Whitewater, this was probably a really neat experience... but I dont think that the stories that will be told in 25 years will be about that so much as the tales of the rest of the actual season... with whatever it may bring.

I mean, the same goes for the Point vs. Marquette exh. when we won our second NCAA championship... it was a great experience, but it didn't really have any bearing on our season, other than to prepare us for the rest of the season.  Probably the only reason why it WOULD be brought up would be by Nick Bennett... because that exh game functionally kept him at #3 on Points all time scoring list instead of #2... he ended up just 3 points shy.

But I digress...  We have got REAL basketball soon...!  Point plays this weekend, when does everyone else begin?

BW,

Bowling?  Seriously.

Ya, I know.  Bowling is one of the few activities that involves a ball yet is not a real sport.  It ticks me off every third Saturday between September and April particularly when I have to miss a basketball or football game.  Actually it's Mrs. BW's idea and you've got to keep the other half happy.  You'll learn that soon enough if you haven't already.

Point Special

Couldn't agree more on your points.  I also read the Bradley site, and came away quite upset, but only for about 3 seconds.  I then did find it quite funny that no one really (just a few did) wanted to give UWP credit for being a good team.  It was like they were actually put below any team that gets put together by the first 5 guys to make freethrow.  All of this because there were no scholarship players on the floor for UWP.  I almost got on that site and posted that they got beat, because the team in new blue uniforms expects to win every game.  Plus they're playing with a chip on their shoulder.  I just hope they don't know that UWP was selected to finish second, or I think that there could be a suicide watch in Peoria.

What ever the outcome of these games, I'm very excited for this season to unfold.

I hope you didn't start something. The last thing we need is for the O-Zone section to start a "Let's Go P" chant.   :)

During the '70s when Harlem legend James "Fly" Williams was scoring 30 a game for the Austin Peay Governors, the fans there had one of the best chants in college basketball history -- "The Fly is open, let's go Peay!"

That's good stuff.  I see kids getting told to shut their traps nowadays.

I have just a quick comment on the poll.  I see a few have voted for Superior.  That is great, and I respect your opinion, but after last year's surprise as Freshmen/Sophomores.  Are they really going to sneak up on anyone as sophomores and juniors?  I think that if UWP, UWW, UWSP were not so veteran laden teams, those young kids would be the cream of the crop.

I put this out there as more of a discussion point.  I most certainly do not want to offend anyone, but I'd be more surprised if they didn't do well.  As you maybe can guess, I voted for La Crosse.  I think they have a lot more unknowns, and with their performance against Winona State could make a couple of upsets.  I'm sure many things will have to happen to do so, but there is quite a lot of time to figure that out.
