Pioneers rolled on Saturday night.  Pioneers officially put the game away at the start of the second half.  Pioneers, somehow only shoot 65% from the charity stripe, which is surprising to me considering it was their home gym, and the way they shot them at Bradley last Sunday.  Either way, they dominated the other aspects of the game especially the defensive end of the floor.  Off til Friday night, when the take on Clarke College in the Pioneer Tip Off Tournament.  Followed by Clarke College on Saturday.

You don't need to play them twice to beef up your record do you?   ;)

Gosh I hope not, so since my last post UWP has dropped that second game with Clarke, and added Loras for Saturday night.  Amazingly quick schedule change considering the original schedule was made months ago.   ;D

Man I need to actually read the preview before I actually post.  Good catch badgerwarhawk....gotta keep you on your toes you know  ;)

UWRF Men's Basketball Preview

Ok, so after reading that I did notice a little something at the end of the story.  I really can not recall if this has been discussed at all on this board in the past 6 months, and I really do not have the time to go and look that far back.

With that said, did anyone else know that the WIAC decided to cut the conference tourney from 8 to 6 teams, with top two getting a bye?

What is the thought behind this exactly?  Economic woes?  Hopes of getting more than one team in the tournament, or maybe more than two?  I'm still a little shocked to see this, but I guess it may enhance the competion for those in the middle and bottom of the league come February.

Again, apologize if was brought up before, but I really do not recall it.

Also would like to give a quick shout out to my boy BT.  Gook luck tonight guiding the Waupaca Lady Comets in your first game as their coach.  Remember, you're still the all time winning percentage leader in PHS Boys Basketball History!

It had been brought up before a few pages back.  I don't know the reason though economics may have played a role as each WIAC school has to pay a share if the tournament loses money.

I think... though I'm not 100% sure, that I remember hearing discussion about there being a better chance that the top 2 seeds might get an at-large bid...  but maybe not.

Certainly, winning two games instead of three is an advantage... especially because the 3-6 and 4-5 games have historically been the more hotly contested games... I don't have the stats right now and don't have time to look them up, but I think that 6's have won the 3/6 matchup at an almost 2-1 clip... though that might be a bit exaggerated since the league has been a bit more top heavy the last few years.

I didn't select other but I thought Myles McKay may enter into the discussion.   Tony Mane is another pretty good player.

RF played a good first half to lead by 42-30. Increased lead to 19 early in half, but it was down hill from there. Considering that Falcons started one freshman, 4 sophomores, inconsistency may be their byword. They have to be the youngest team in the league--only two seniors on the team, both off the bench.

St. Scholastica a so-so team, but obviously one able to battle back from far behind. Unofficially, Troy Miller led six Saints in double figures with 14.

Jontae Koonkaew and Wade Guerin each had 17, Aaron Anderson (freshman starter from Stillwater, MN) had 12, Jesse Elling 11.

UWO 84
LU 81

Nice bounce back game for the Titans.....

DSA and Marsh both post double-doubles with DSA putting up 29 points (15-20 FT) and 10 rebounds.  Marsh chips in with 15 points and 11 boards (and unfortuantely 7 TO's.)  Miller and Cory Witwer round out the double figure scoring with 14 and 13 points respectively.  Transfer John Henney was able to chip in 9 points off the bench as well.

UWO was up by as much as 13 with 0:52 left in the second half, but LU was able to keep chipping away, however the final score was as close as things got.

As down as some of the Titans were following Saturday's game, things SHOULD look a litte more up-beat after tonight.  I have a feeling that this is how UWO's season may be...... a little up, and a little down.

UWO wins, 84-81, over Lawrence
UWO was just plain better than LU. Just a different UWO team tonight than the one that played SNC. Don't know if it was just a first-game downer for LU, but the better team was evident. The final score is misleading.

UWO got much better production and aggressiveness out of the "role" guys. Henney and Wittwer stood out in that regard, but everyone who played gave solid minutes, even the guys who scored 0 or 2 points.

LU had no answer for DSA after Page and his help D fouled out. It was old-school UWO ball: get to the line, rebound and have the gunners gun.

Pretty quiet 20 from Kroeger, if there is such a thing. Dustin Lee was impressive for LU, though. He was quick and was aggressive with his shot.

Regarding the WIAC 6 team playoffs...I either heard or read recently of some of the reasoning behind this decision.  It sounded as though the top two teams were being rewarded with a bye for the first round so that if one of them won the WIAC tourney, they would be fresher and might have a better shot of going deeper in the NCAA tourney.  The WIAC tourney can be 3 hard games in 5 days, and having to play in only 2 games instead of 3 would take less of a physical toll on the winning team, if it were one of the top two seeds.
