Graduated in 1997 from RMC.  Played 4 Years.  Co-Captain in junior and senior year.  Spent a year coaching at Emory & Henry under Bob Johnson before going to U.S. Naval Academy.  Was at the Naval Academy for 5 years. While in Annapolis he served as head coach Don DeVoe's chief western recruiter, landing numerous top prospects from that region. Davis helped guide the Midshipmen to Patriot League championship game appearances in 2000 and 2001.  After that he went to Bucknell University, where he was responsible in all aspects of the program under Head Coach Pat Flannery (Rhoades' Coach at Lebanon Valley and where Sean McAloon was an assistant). He assisted with scouting and player development and was recruiting coordinator. On a number of occasions, he served as interim head coach when Flannery missed games because of illness.  During his tenure, the Bison won 99 games including two Patriot League regular-season championships, two Patriot League Tournament championships and made two NCAA Tournament appearances. During both of Bucknell's NCAA appearances, the Bison pulled first round upsets over Kansas in 2005 and Arkansas in 2006. In 2006 Bucknell finished 24th in the nation in the Coaches Poll.  He was the top assistant at Colgate this past year.  Went 10-20.

3s down-I have heard his name among those mentioned, also.I am not, however, familiar with him but many of the alumni I have spoken to are.....and you're right,RMC has not always made the best coaching decisions but you are forgetting one major thing.Denis Kanach was not on board as A.D. when those decisions were made-I would hope and I do think that better decisions are being made now....

I'm not too worried about the current administration affecting the new hire.  Nothing about this president indicates to me he has the indifference to athletics that the previous president had.  This is not a criticism of the previous president; he was an academic person, and I think we 'd all agree that academics are important.  :)  But the current president seems to understand the business aspects of having winning sports programs.

All of the names previously mentioned seems to be good ones, and I'd be shocked if a candidate from outside of the Nunnally/Rhoades lineage got the job.  This process should be an interesting one to follow if nothing else.

I do wish Coach Rhoades the very best of luck at VCU, and I'm thankful for the time he gave the Randolph-Macon program.  He will be missed.

Folks -

Here are some general obersvations from a thirty-plus year fan of D-III Mens Basketball in the old Middle Atlantic Conference and the newer Centennial Conference in the Mid-Altantic Region.

It is nice to see that Mike Rhoades is moving up from Division III to an assistant coach at a Division I program. His departure will be a big loss to the RMC program. He is one of those rare individuals who truly shows that you can successfully balance competitiveness and success and still be a class act!

When Mike played at Lebanon Valley, he was one of those great players that opponents loved to hate, but who opponents and their fans ultimately respected for his abilities and drive. This assessment comes from a long-time F&M fan who saw Mike's Flying Dutchmen squad beat is beloved Diplomats several times both in Lancaster and Annville.

Both congratulations and condolences are certainly due to Mike after what I am sure has been a very tough year with the early loss of his father Pennsylvania State Senator James Rhoades in a tragic automobile accident!

I am thinking that the new coach be in place by May 1, if RMC is interested in getting any worthwhile recruits. I think May 1 cause If I remember correctly that seems to be the committment deadline for D3. Now I know that things change over the summer in D3 but I think the majority is still decided this time of year.  Anyone have any other ideas?

Hope all are well.  There is no tennis board so I am going to post this here.  HSC ended W&L's reign as tennis champs.  They had won the past 13 and 28 of the 32 that have been awarded.  Congratulations to Coach Bates and his team!  Coach Bates has had a tough year with the death of his wife (who was a colleague of mine) and this has to be very rewarding.  I know he wishes she would have been here to celebrate with him, but she is still part of it!

On another note, sorry to hear about Rhoades leaving, but I had been wondering when that would happen.  Good luck in finding another coach.

Goodbye old friend....My very first car was a 1962 Pontiac Catalina sport coupe, black with red vinyl interior, V8 engine, four barrel carburetor. A very nice car. I had a lot of friends who had GTOs. My father drove Pontiacs and Oldsmobiles. Times were simpler then. Cars were really cars. The end of an era!  :-\

Looks like RMC has made their coaching choice, Nathan Davis.  Here is an article from the Times-Dispatch about the hiring: http://www.timesdispatch.com/rtd/sports/college/college_basketball/article/RMCBGAT27_20090427-135604/264235/

Good solid choice.  I remember Nathan Davis from his playing days at RMC in the early '90s.  He's got the experience, that's for sure.  Should be one heck of a recruiter. 8)

I will go a bit further. This is the best thing that could happen after Rhoades departure. And I'm sure JD will be able to stay on with Davis if he so desires. And I hope he does stay on unless he has a better opportunity.

JD is staying on as well. Great news!!

Next year will be exciting for ODAC b'ball; however I think Guilford will be the dominant team followed by VWC. It will be a fist fight between the rest of the league. I'm looking forward to it, as always.

#1 Guilford will be hard to beat ... no doubt about it!  The undisputed Preseaon #1 pick by a long shot!

#2 Randolph-Macon will always be good, but they lose Rhoades and Short and it will be interesting to see how that plays out, whether they finish among the top 3 or 4 teams.

#3 Maroons lose Curtis Peery and we'll have to see what kind of impact that loss has ....

#4 Bridgewater brings back much the same team that finished their season.  But no Oblitey.  They could be a Top-Four teame ....

#5 EMU brings back all of their starters.  Could they move even higher than #5 next year?

#6 HSC loses none of their end-of-season starters.  The Tigers' top 8 scorers will all return -- Turner King, Ben Jessee, Shane Payne, Lane Medlin, Jonathan Mudd, Karlis Trops, Matt Partsch, and Colin O'Neill.  Second season under Dee Vick should solidify this team and my understanding from Admissions is that we're looking at an excellent group of Freshmen coming in!  I think the Tigers could end up among the top 2 or 3 teams.

#7 Virginia Wesleyan looked good this year with a VERY young team, but only time will tell whether experience will help them move up from the bottom half of the ODAC.

#8 Washington and Lee arguably loses a greater piece of their team to graduation than any other team in the ODAC .... Ben Heller, Chris McHugh, and Isaiah Goodman.  I don't expect they'll move up in the standings.

#9 Emory and Henry loses 4-5 seniors but may look about the same.

#10 Randolph will have the benefit of another year of experience, losing no one to graduation.  Derrick Woods-Morrow should be even better in his sophomore year.  It wouldn't be surprising to see them finish as high as 5th or 6th.

#11 Lynchburg ........... What can we say?

Congratulations to Coach Macedo on his recent honor as 2009 Virginia College Division Coach of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors. This is Dave's fourth such honor in five years. He noted in his remarks that he's very excited about the 2009/2010 Marlins and stated "our future is very bright."

Algernon - I'm picking the Marlins #1 or #2 next season ;D
