Congratulations to EMU for an outstanding game last night.  I kept going back and forth from the VWC/HSC game to the EMU/RMC game and I was exhausted.   (I can only imagine how tired the players were)  Congrats to the Marlins also..for pulling out a win at the end.  Guiford also had a win, maybe a bit easier night for them, but a good win nevertheless.  Imagine 4 teams with only one loss...this is going to be a year for the record books I suspect, and the fun is just beginning.  The players and coaches of all these fine teams deserve a great deal of respect for their efforts this year.  The ODAC has made great strides to become one of the best DIII conferences around, and has earned a reputation for great basketball. The next few weeks will be a real test of determination and strength, and the winners will emerge.  Still too early to pick who will end up on top.

By scoring 17 points last night versus E&H, Guilford's Tyler Sanborn became the 29th Quaker men's player to pass 1,000 career points.  With 1,009 points, he's currently 28th in the school's 103-year hoops history.  With eleven rebounds in last night's game, Sanborn also notched his 9th straight double-double and, I think, his 12th of the season.

Saturday is the day for R-MC to pull together and get things back on track. Go Jackets! Play some Defense.

Royals Topple No. 1 Randolph-Macon in Thrilling 90-67 Win
Eastern Mennonite men's basketball is officially on the map. Just two weeks after garnering the program's first national ranking, the Runnin Royals welcomed in the nation's top-ranked team, undefeated Randolph-Macon. EMU blew open a close contest in the second half and finished with a landmark win, 90-67.

The electricity built all week, as the Royals moved up to No. 18 in the D3hoops.com national poll and Randolph-Macon held onto the No. 1 ranking. In front of 1564 fans in Yoder Arena (a new record) and 388 more watching around the country via a webcast, the two teams traded jabs in the first half.

Todd Phillips (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) made a pair of steals and dunks to push EMU to an 18-15 edge. After a few more lead changes, the Runnin Royals closed the half on an 11-4 streak to take a 48-42 edge into halftime.

That late surge carried over into the second frame, as the men opened on a 15-3 tear over the first 3:55 of the half to blow open a 63-45 lead after a George Johnson (Richmond, Va./Miller School) three pointer. Combined with the first-half run, EMU outscored the Yellow Jackets 26-7 over a 6:30 span.

R-MC regrouped, but couldn't slow down the fast-breaking Royals. The best the visitors could muster was a late five-point run, as EMU sealed the impressive win, 90-67.

Eastern Mennonite imposed its strengths in the win, especially in the second half. The men forced the Yellow Jackets into 22 turnovers while picking out 14 steals. As the tempo picked up, R-MC's shooting percentage went down as the visitors shot just 27% in the second half, hitting 7 of 26 attempts.

The Royals also outrebounded one of the nation's best rebounding teams, 43-39. EMU was 36-76 from the floor for 47% while Randolph-Macon finished at 43%.

Phillips had an outstanding effort with game highs of 26 points, 12 rebounds and 6 steals. Johnson was just behind with 25 counters as he was 10-15 from the floor. D.J. Hinson (Newport News, Va./Menchville) added 22. Eli Crawford (Staunton, Va./R.E. Lee), who struggled with flu-like symptoms earlier in the week, added eight rebounds and four assists.

Danny Jones led the Yellow Jackets with 21 points off the bench.

It was the first-ever victory over a top-ranked team for the men's program. EMU played Hampden-Sydney twice in the 1999-2000 when the Tigers were No. 1 in the national poll. The Royals lost both of those games by double digits.

The win bumps EMU to 12-1 on the year, as the men stay perfect against NCAA D-III opponents. The Runnin Royals also lead the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with a 6-0 mark. Randolph-Macon slips to 13-1 and 4-1. Eastern Mennonite hopes to avoid a let-down when they travel to Randolph on Saturday, Jan. 16.

Number 3 Washington University just lost at home to Brandeis in OT, 58-55.  With two losses, expect the Bears to fall back a few notches.  UW-SP may move to the top, but the rest of the Top 10 seems to be in for a lot of changes next week!

Sorry, but that's incorrect.  I've reported the correct times in this room before - not sure why they're listed as different times in different places.

Men Guilford vs VWC 2 pm
Women Guilford vs VWC 4 pm

Perhaps d3hoops is not doing a live broadcast or they're picking up the feed part of the way through, but trust me, the live game starts at 2 pm.  In fact, Guilford's schedule in d3hoops.com, on its own college site and in today's Greensboro News & Record, all correctly say 2 pm.  I'm involved with activities at the game today, so unless someone's thrown me a curve since last night, tune in in two hours!

Enjoy!

The EMU game vs Randolph at 2 pm makes me a little nervous. I am anxious to see how the Royals respond after the win over Macon. They had a few days to enjoy that win. Hopefully now they have moved on and are focused on one game at a time. The Runnin' Royals have been a confident team all season, I just hope they keep it in check, especially after Wednesday nights game. Go EMU!!

Deanslist,

I agree.  EMU is good but I hope they don't become over confident.

Thanks. Unfortunately, we were stuck with what was on the conference web site, since we both use Presto.
