Big difference on scoring was 30 bench points from H-SC and only 2 from EMU - Mudd was player of game with 17 points and only 2 turnovers - 4 in double figures for H-SC - George with double-double with all-time dunk at end so FOY looks promising - EMU had some of the longest 3 pointers ever - great win as H-SC has div 2 school in tomorrow and then starts long rod trip to cap season

Can Braxton and Brown play for a full 40 minutes? What they are doing today they MUST do every game! They both are having an effect on the game.

Hampden-Sydney has won its fourth straight game with one of the biggest victories of the season, finally beating a Top 25 opponent and getting revenge for its biggest loss of the season!  The Tigers defeated EMU, 80-68, with leadership by seniors Turner King (17 points, 9 rebounds) and Jonathan Mudd (17 points, 8 rebounds) ....  while Harrison George had a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds) and a pretty amazing dunk in traffic to all but seal the game with 3 minutes remaining.  It was certainly the most impressive dunk I've seen in Kirby Fieldhouse in 15 years of watching Tiger basketball and I heard EagleSlam say the same thing on the radio after the game.

The Tigers are now 1-5 in games against Top 25 teams ..... and their only loss by more than 5 points to a Top 25 team was their 17-point loss a few weeks ago to EMU in Harrisonburg .... so this was was a nice revenge game.

Guilford gets another win, beating RMC 82-73, and they're now 18-1.  The Quakers will undoubtedly be ranked #1 in the country when the next poll comes out on Tuesday.

Sanborn was on fire!  11-14 from the field, 4-8 free throws and 13 boards.   :)  They're #1!

Guilford Quakers won 82-73 over Randolph-Macon.  The game was way closer than the final score.  Guilford was behind at the half, and nursed a 4 point lead for much of the second half.   The Jackets played it really tough.
I think hasanova was at the game.  He, or someone else who was there could provide impressions.

Congrats to Hampden-Sydney today also.

Congrats to all today's winners from a snow-laden Ashland.  We only live a few minutes W of town, and we can't even get out of our neighborhood, with what looks like 16" on the ground and it's still falling.

Taking nothing away from Guilford, clearly a most impressive team, R-MC played well in a tough loss from what we could hear on the audio.  One factor may have been that R-MC was in foul trouble early and often.  (Possibly from playing more aggressively which would be a good sign anyway...)   Also, when the Jackets DID get fouled, they weren't as effective at shooting free throws as they could have been.

The Jackets had more good minutes than bad today & we're happy about that.  We hope everyone gets home from today's games safely.

GO JACKETS!!!

I'll have to agree with Algernon.  Harrison George had a monster dunk in the game that energized the crowd and helped to extend HSC's lead.  The Tiger's, with the exception of the first few minutes, played well.  I was impressed by the fact that they did not allow the early deficit to get them down.  After weathering the early storm, they were able to get into the game and outplay EMU for the remainder of the 1st half and take a 12-point lead into half.  They extended the lead after a quick push by EMU to start the 2nd half and kept a double digit lead most of the half until about the final 4 minutes.  HSC played well today, especially down the stretch making good decisions and, for the most part, taking good shots.  They played very good defense.

I do have to wonder about the officials though.  I really can't complain because the calls went both ways and they were consistent, but I don't believe they called a single charge in the game.  Everything was a block, even though there were numerous times when players had feet set well ahead of time or when the offensive player used an elbow or lowered a shoulder.  Oh well, as said, they were at least consistent and the calls went both ways.

I was also impressed with the crowd today.  For the weather being so bad, they were a lot of fans at the game.  The students were definitely having a good time!  One came dressed as the purple Teletubbie (sp?).  HSC now has a stretch of aways games after tomorrow's non-conference game before finishing the season at home with the Marlins of VWC.  While Guilford is in the driver's seat, the conference tourney appears to be wide open.  There are a number of teams capable of winning it.  Don't forget what happened last year.  The last few weeks should be good ones!  Hope all who traveled got home safely.

sludge, GC had a tough game today - almost everyone but Sanborn had an "off" 1st half.  The Quakers started the 2nd strong and took the lead, then Guilford took the lead for good at 68-67 - nip and tuck until GC pulled away on FT's in the last 2 minutes.  Bonner had a great second half and Henson hit a few key shots.  RMC played well, especially Pugh, Brown and Braxton, but I think the best team won today.

Snow is fierce - really kept the crowd down, but people there were great.

Expect GC to be #1 on Tuesday.  Go Quakers!

Big win for HSC. Congrats. They played well today. I do agree the officials belong back in highschool, but they were terrible both ways. EMU again didn't shoot well. Todd Phillips has played the last 4 games with a pulled groin. He didn't shoot well at all and still ended with a double double. DJ Hinson was off, and 3 of the royals starters were in fouls trouble in both halfs. Kudos to HSC for getting a big W today. They are a hot team, and will be scary come tournament time!!!  I am happy for Turner King. I like his game, and that Freshman is very good. He is ROY in my opinion

Yellow Jackets Had better wake up !! Most people I have talked to are saying they are done, but I will not give up on them just yet. If they take one game at a time, maybe just maybe......

RMC looked like world-beaters in the first half yesterday (7 of 14 on threes!).  Where was the team that went 1 for 23 against W&L?  lol  They had a 40-27 lead, but Guilford scored the last 7 of the first half to cut it to 40-34.  At that point, I didn't think Macon could sustain their hot hand for two halves - and I was pleased that even though GC had poor point production out of the guards in the first half, they were still "in the game".

Braxton played very well - he was a force for RMC.  It's perplexing that the Yellow Jackets have lost 4 of their last 6, but I, for one, never count out RMC ... too much talent, too much good coaching and too much tradition!  I think they'll finish strong.

I can see why folks respect and love RMC.  With the snow, it was such a surreal atmosphere that I couldn't get a "normal" feel for the campus, but I got to see the train depot, the fountain, Cross Brothers grocery, the Iron Horse Restaurant, Day Field and Crenshaw Gym.  Many thanks to RMC for letting ALL of us visitors eat with the team after the game - the food was very good.  With every restaurant in town closed that night, it was a welcome respite!  Hopefully, I can make it back again for football or basketball!

One humorous note ... I was walking down Henry Sreet looking for Crenshaw and, ironically, probably asked the only two students at RMC who had never been to a game where to find the gym.  I found it anyway.  :)

Thanks to everyone who posted a great Efficiency Rating.  I look forward to seeing more!

I remembered UCLA's Bill Walton had a 44-point game (21 of 22 from the field) in the 1973 NCAA DI title game versus Memphis (Memphis State in the day).  He also hit 2 FTs, but the boxscore was very incomplete by today's standards.  If anyone could find the rest of it, I'd appreciate it!  That was a year dunking wasn't allowed - on roughly ten of his baskets, he simply held it over the rim with two hands and then just dropped it through.  lol

Nice win this afternoon over Washington Adventist, a DII team that was fast and played aggressive defense.  Turner King had 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Harrison George had 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals in only 25 minutes of play.  Ben Jessee scored 14 and Jonathan Mudd had 9, while freshman  Randall Ward had 6 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists in 19 minutes of play.

The Tigers are really hitting their stride at this point and I think that Harrison George is clearly the ODAC FOY, averaging 16.9 points and 8.2 rebounds a game in ODAC Conference play.

The Tigers will now go on the road again and again and again .... @ Guilford on Wednesday (videocast at http://www.pennatlantic.com/main.php?tableName=event&fileName=results&recordId=&module=event-results&orderBy=&searchIt=yes&sport=0&month=0&day=01&year=2009&conferenceId=0&schoolId=308) and then to Emory on Saturday the 6th, to Roanoke on Wednesday the 10th, and to Randolph-Macon the following Wednesday, not returning to Fleet until Saturday the 20th.  They might have to play a play-in game for the tournament on Tuesday the 23rd, but I'm hoping that they'll be seeded #3, #4, or #5 and avoid that one.
