RMC has a route to the NCAAs ..... winning the ODAC tournament.  But I think that there is little to no chance that all of the stars will align so perfectly for RMC that the Yellow Jackets will get into the tournament without winning their next 3 games.

Quote from Ziggy, but with emphasis added:  "To let you in on a little "man behind the curtain" stuff, RMC came off our board as the #5 Pool C. Mary Hardin-Baylor went on next and stayed there because their strength of schedule ranks #294, RMC's is #20. Guilford, Virginia Wesleyan and RMC all have very good SOS numbers with tournament level winning percentages to match."

Ziggy... could your board name have anything to do with STARdust???  We are wondering whether any of the regional #1's beat 2 (or more) of the other regional #1's?  R-MC beat Williams and Wooster early in the season...maybe the stars have been out of line for R-MC since then & are now swinging back around!

I guess we'll all know by Sunday.

GO JACKETS!!!

There is a possibility  ;)
A friend gave me the nickname in high school because of the David Bowie song and because my given name also begins with Z

Not that I am aware of, although I didn't look into it in depth. The Wooster win helps more because it is considered in-region while the Williams win would factor into the secondary criteria.

Ziggy,

You are basing this on Macon being ahead of Mary-Hardin Baylor in teh regional rankings.  If those positions change, then Macon may not make it to the table.  I agree that Macon has had a better season in terms of quality wins than MHB, but the regional rankings do not always do a good job of showing that.  I hope in this case they will because it is good for the ODAC, but Macon will, in all likelihood have 2 more losses than they did when the last poll was released and MHB may not have lost again moving them ahead.

You are absolutely right. It was our determination that Randolph-Macon deserves to stay ahead of MHB in the regional rankings. If they get stuck behind MHB in the rankings it may cost them a bid because MHB's low SOS. As long as RMC gets on the board I don't see a problem getting a Pool C.

Also remember that this projection is a snapshot in time. A projection a week out isn't necessarily meant to accurately reflect the final field but to give a general picture of where teams stand at the time the projection is made.

You might be sprinkling stardust in our eyes, Ziggy, but you are certainly decreasing my certainty that RMC will not get into the NCAA without winning the AQ.  It still seems highly unlikely, but I'm not as convinced that RMC won't get a Pool C.

By Saturday evening, once we see what kind of upsets happen in conference tournaments around the country, we'll have a better sense of whether RMC has a shot of going to the dance without winning the ODAC AQ.

So you are claiming to not be Scottie 2 Hottie?
:D

Anyway, here's the throw down:  Tyler Sanborn for POY.  Period.

Tyler Sanborn POY  absolutely not! He may get it b/c he is a senior, but he is not the Player of the Year, and not the Most Valuable Player either. The true POY is TODD PHILLIPS - EMU. Each of them had 3 Player of the Week awards. EMU was picked 4th and finished 1st. He crushed Sanborn Head to Head by vaulting his team to a 27pt win in Greensboro, not to mention Todd's E- Rating was 31 vs Sanborns 25 in that game. EMU is also 4-0 vs. Top 25 teams. GC is 2-2 in Conference Top 25. Todd stepped up and willed his team to victory in the big games. Sanborn did not. Sanborn is a great player, a fantastic player and will probably get the award b/c he is the senior with a great stat sheet, however he is not the most deserving. Period

So, from what I understand, the 1st, 2nd, HM, and COY, FOY and POY are announced on Thursday night.

Is this at an offical function or does the ODAC release this info to the media?

Sorry, I'm a Newbie!

Thanks

The league announces its yearly awards at a pre-tournament banquet at the Salem Civic Center.  Word may leak out before an official announcement hits the internet.

sludge ..... even therock is claiming to not be Scottie 2 Hottie!

stillfamily ..... I won't comment on how your use of stats to make your case, but I'll just note that it's an award for the entire season .... not one game.  Tyler Sanborn not only has scored more than Phillips, but he's also getting 6+ more boards a game than Phillips.  Further, his team is a regular season co-champion in perhaps the strongest conference in all of DIII, sporting a 23-2 record.  His accomplishments on the court this season are nothing short of phenomenal.

If I were arguing for someone other than Sanborn, I would make the case for Stephen Fields.  However, I think that Sanborn's the POY.  Period.

Harrison George is the FOY.  Period.  (Chris Astorga's a solid runner-up!)

Kirby Dean is the COY.  Period.

First team:  Sanborn, Fields, Henson, Phillips, King, Trawick.  Period.

:D :D :D :D

Algernon- please comment. Phillips has played great all season, hence the fact he avg. 18 and 8 on a team that has 4 awesome players. Phillips made his case all year and did it by leading his team to a 21-3 record. He does score more than Phillips and may grab more rebs. than Phillips. But, Phillips is in the top few in almost every category. Sanborn is not. And for you to say Fields?  Are you kidding me? I'll laugh at that joke. hahaha
Scoring  Sanborn 3rd, Phillips 6th
Rebs      Sanborn 1st, Phillips 4th
FG %      Sanborn 1st. Phllips 10th
Assists   Phllips 10th, Sanborn not ranked
Steals    Phillips 3rd,   Sanborn not ranked
3pt FG made  Phillips 11th, Sanborn not ranked
Blocked shots  Sanborn 3rd, Phillips 8th
Don't fault him b/c he is big, but he shoots layups b/c he is 6'10. Phillips shoots layups, 3's, dunks, drives, passes,  etc. He does it all!! I would pick Phillips over Sanborn everytime b/c he brings more to the table and has brought more to his team this year. I'm sure Sanborn will get POY but I don't think he is most deserving. I don't want to take anything away from him, but do want to highlight Phillips dominance.

Looking at these stats, why would you laugh at Fields as POY?

Scoring  Fields ... 20.9 ppg      Phillips ... 17.8 ppg

Rebs     Phillips ... 7.3 rpg       Fields ... 4.5 rpg .... With players like Donald Vaughn, Quantrell Simmons, and Chris Astorga pulling down so many rebounds, there aren't many left for Fields.  It's not a big part of his role.)

Assists     Fields ... 3.2 per game     Phillips ... 2.96 per game
A/T ratio  Phillips ...   0.97                Fields ...     0.86
Steals      Phillips .... 2.1 / game      Fields ...  1.6 / game
FT %        Fields ...    .795                Phillips ... .728
3pt FG%  Fields ...   .396                 Phillips ....    .366

Stephen Fields averaged 8.6 ppg in his freshman year on a team that went to the national championship game and finished as National Runnerup.  He has continued to improve each year since then.  Fields led the Marlins to the ODAC title in his junior year and, averaging over 20 points a game this year, will very possibly manage to do the same thing again.  If the Marlins defeat Washington & Lee in the quarterfinal, they could get another win over Guilford in the semifinal, and would then need to defeat (presumably) either EMU, HSC, or RMC in the championship game.  Fields appears to be the undisputed leader of this 21-4 team in his senior year.

therock

POY: Sanborn
FOY: Harrison George, no contest although Chris Astorga could be just as good as George down the road
COY: Kirby Dean

First team: Sanborn, Fields, Phillips, Echols, Trawick, King - last one out was Clay Henson as he was edged out by the last three on my list. I think he is skilled enough to be first team, he just doesn't make the cut for me because the other players have a more well rounded game in my opinion.

Second team: Clay Henson, Goetsch, Vaughn, George Johnson, H. George, J. Brown

HM: DJ Hinson, Bonner, Braxton, White, Walker, Grigg
