Ouch.  Roanoke goes down 87-78.  The Maroons played lackluster ball in the first half--scored only 25 points while giving up an easy 39.  In the second half they played with a lot more intensity, but so did UMass-Dartmouth, which answered every run that Roanoke made.  Roanoke's pressing defense created 13 steals and 20 turnovers, but they had no answer for the Corsairs' half-court game.  UM-D shot 55.6% from beyond the arc (compared to Roanoke's 32.8%) and UM-D swept the boards.  They collected 46 rebounds to RC's 28.  Their two big men had 11 and 15 boards, and a bunch of stick-backs for 18 and 16 points.  Tee Jackson had a very fine shooting performance on 6-10 for 3's, but the rest of the team was 1-12.

Back to the drawing board for tomorrow's game against Ferrum, which lost the Lebanon Valley.  I think LVC would have given Roanoke a tough time, but i don't see that as the strong point of Ferrum's game.  Page needs to work his guys on boxing out, because there are some nasty big guys in the ODAC looking to pad their stats in the run for conference MVP.

Why doesn't Coach Moir give A.J. Dowell a little more time?  He'd probably be averaging in double figures if he got 25 minutes a game.  Watching him play last year for HSC, I thought he was a fine player, especially for a freshman.

Good to see the Tigers recognized as #15 in the most recent D3hoops poll.  The Tigers should win another couple, if they can get by Eastern Mennonite, before they play the Yellow Jackets next Wednesday.

The Yellow Jackets fall to #17 after their loss to Fisk and have a tough schedule over the next four days, with 3 games in the course of 5 days.  They'll be ready for a couple days rest after that.

Virginia Wesleyan is getting some votes again, in recognition of their 8-3 record, with 6 wins in a row.

algernon,
We can only hope that A.J. will unleash 20 points per game against Hampden-Sydney, can't we?

The Roanoke Times carried a story about the Roanoke and the Ferrum games yesterday:

Jim ...  It will be very strange to see A.J. playing for the Maroons.  I hope he gets more playing time this season, but that he has an off-night against his former teammates when we come to Salem on Saturday the 14th.
