He's definitely in the conversation but I'd probably still pick Pittman over him simply because EMU hasn't lived up to their lofty expectations this sesaon. They were an elite 8 team with everyone returning... they still have a chance to do that but I don't think anyone expected them to lose the games they did. Pittman however has stepped up as a go-to threat for a team in which no one knew who would be the one to step up after the losses of Henson and Sanborn.

So what do you think?  Are these the possible POYs?:  George (HSC Soph), Pittman (Guilford Soph), Johnson (EMU Senior), Phillips (EMU Senior).

Yeah those look like the best candidates in my honest, humble, VWC loving blue and white bleeding opinion  ;)

GEORGE   28.4 min/game, .572 FG%, .279 3PT%, .724 FT%, 7.9 REB/game, 38 assists, 61 TO, 31 steals, 19.8 PTS/game
PHILLIPS  26.7 min/game, .494 FG%, .296 3PT%, .752 FT%, 5.3 REB/game, 62 assists, 55 TO, 47 steals, 18.5 PTS/game
PITTMAN  31.4 min/game, .414 FG%, .374 3PT%, .851 FT%, 4.0 REB/game, 52 assists, 64 TO, 38 steals, 17.5 PTS/game
JOHNSON  29.8 min/game, .423 FG%, .400 3PT%, .926 FT%, 1.8 REB/game, 61 assists, 34 TO, 37 steals, 15.2 PTS/game

I'm betting that Todd Phillips will be POY, given that he is a senior and his team has an 18-4 record.

First Team: George Johnson, Todd Phillips, Harrison George, Josh Pittman, Nate Campbell and Danny Jones.  (I'd put Colton Hunt on the first team instead of Danny Jones, if he were a senior.)

ROY - DJ Woodmore, VWC

COY - Clay Nunley, RAND

Unfortunately there are many players in Division lll that cannot afford to stay at private colleges today because the cost of education is so high.  They end up transfering to a school that can meet more of their financial burden.  It will be increasingly more difficult for all private schools to keep players/students as cost continually rise each year.  The poorer the family/student the less likely they are to remain for 4 years, especially with no scholarships available in division lll.  RMC1982, you have defended the Marlins many, many times and I do believe you to be fair.   I guess the Marlins just make good conversation, good and bad. :)

And now a basketball question for everyone. I have been looking at the next week of games and noticed that VWC,HSC and EMU all play three games this coming week while R-MC plays but one, would you rather keep a team busy at this time of year or have time to rest their legs. Remembering that the ODAC tourney starts the following week.

I am split on this,on one hand you can use the week to set up your bench rotation(some schools use less players come tourney time) or do you welcome the light schedule so everyone has fresh legs?

Algernon, just curious, why would you take Hunt over Jones if he were a senior??

hsctigers2002

I wouldn't even consider George Johnson for ODAC Player of the Year. He is a fine scorer and shooter but in conference only games, he hasn't really done much else. I would put Danny Jones on First-Team over him and would consider Eli Crawford over Johnson

POY: Harrison George. Doubt he gets it though since he is a sophomore
ROY: DJ Woodmore
COY: Clay Nunley, but Palombo has a strong chance of making me change my mind

First Team: Harrison George, Todd Phillips, Colton Hunt, Danny Jones, Josh Pittman, Nate Campbell
Second Team: Ru White, Melvin Felix, Tobi Akinsola, George Johnson, Eli Crawford, Donald Vaughn
Honorable Mention: Austin Chillemi, Brandon Braxton, Terrance Grigg, DJ Woodmore, JD Ey, Rick Maloney
Others considered: Derrick Woods-Morrow, Eric Pugh, Chris Astorga, Chris Teasley

Optimally I would want 2 games, as opposed to one or three. Three will be tough to handle, both physically and mentally, but two will keep you sharp and focused more than one would, in my opinion

... and Bonner!

Rhett Bonner totally slipped my mind... he gave us more headaches than anyone just about

Those three - Sanborn, Henson and Bonner - accounted for 50+ points a game for the Quakers their last two years.  Anyone of them could - and did - put the team on his back when the situation arose.  Quaker fans are pleasantly surprised at the team's success this season after their graduations last spring.

Donho .... What I meant to say was that it would be a hard choice between Hunt and Jones, but I'd go with Jones because he's a senior, while Hunt's not.

DeWayneCarter

The reason why VWC is playing 3 games next week is because their game against EMU was postponed back in January

JWW is correct in that the Virginia Wesleyan stereotype has been discussed for years on this board.  The term "thugs froim the beach" may have been voiced in other ways over the years but the theme has been pretty constant. I first heard of it during the Jason Nickerson ('95-'98) years. That group had a reputation of playing hard and "playing" hard, if you get my drift. This meant as no slight to any of that group, just the reputation that was floating out there. It peaked for me on a trip to Wesleyan in the old high school gym. David Doino came out for pre-warm-ups in a football jersey (NY Giants I believe) his freshman year, had plenty of bling around his neck and a toothpick in his mouth. Now David was a thick individual with jet black hair sorta "slicked back" and an "Italian" look. David also possessed a certain swagger that rubbed off on his teammates. Now again, I mean no disrespect to David when descrbing him. I understand that he is a helluva nice young man and obviously was was a standout performer in this league. A certain former ODAC POY has had nothing but nice things to say about David over the years. Just trying to paint a picture here... We had a good chuckle about and the Marlins proceeded to hand BC their lunch that day. My point...I don't think I was the only one to notice that day or other days that were probably similar. First impressions, while often wrong are everlasting!

I do feel that certain ODAC schools present an "elitist" personna and when other schools/players don't fit that streotype then adjectives like "thug" are bound to pop up. Just kids being kids...  trying to make their way and find their mark in this world.

FWIW I like Virginia Wesleyan College. Dave Macedo's predecessor, Terry Butterfield was a first class individual and a fine small college basketball coach. Don Birmingham, Butterfield's assistant was likewise first rate and a hard working assistant. I am sure that Dave Macedo fits right into that group. Besides I think we're all just a little jealous that these guys could/can step outside of their campus doors and wade in the Atlantic...count me in that group!

Couple hours late on this line of conversation but 95% of the "thugs from the beach" references on this board actually are written by VWC fans. This reference from steelyglen was an exception.

^^I already yielded on this conversation, but will yield again to the guru! :D

I just recalled the line used far more than once; didn't recall who was using it. ;)

And highly appropriate that Pat chose a 2006 quote - that was the year VaWes won it all (and beat my favored Titans :().
