How interesting!!  It's cool to see ODAC teams ranked so high, with 3 in the Top 25!

The ODAC is definitely one of the stronger conferences in the country. The CCIW has the following ranked teams - #2 Illinois Wesleyan, #5 Wheaton, #6 North Central. The NESCAC has #1 Amherst, #3 Williams, and #18 Middlebury. The WIAC has #4 UWSP and #14 UWW. So 11 of the top 25 are from four conferences.

I think that most posters would agree that the ODAC is one of the five toughest conferences in the country, the others being the NESCAC, WIAC, CCIW, and UAC.  There are a number of ways that various people have examined the issue and, again and again, it seems that the conclusion is that these are the 5 strongest conferences in the country over the last 15 years.

Prior to the Tigers getting to the Final Four in 1999 and 2003, with the Marlins winning the national championship in 2006 and returning to Salem in 2007 .... back in the 90s .... the ODAC would not have been included among the top 5 conferences.  Instead, the NJAC would have been included with the other four mentioned among the top 5 conferences.

See my bold above. Do you mean UAA (University Athletic Association with Wash U, Chicago, Brandeis, NYU, Rochester, Case, Carnegie Mellon, and Emory)? If so, I would agree.

I agree with your point ... I'd also like to highlight Guilford (twice) and RMC's Final Four trips.

So the following ODAC teams have gone to the final four:

HSC (2)
VWC (2)
GC (2)
RMC (?)

That is pretty impressive. Will be interesting to see if an ODAC member is good enough to get there this coming season.

The answer to your question about how many times R-MC has made it to the Final Four probably gets answered with an asterisk. I believe it would be once as a D3 team and once as a D2 team (1977 I think - lost in the national championship game).

That is strictly from memory. Research could prove me wrong.

In 1976-77, Hal Nunnally led the Yellow Jackets to a 23-8 record and the NCAA Division II Championship in Springfield, Massachusetts, where the team finished second.

Randolph-Macon's 2009-10 season was their first ever trip to the NCAA Division III Final  Four.

During the 1982-83 season, Roanoke again reached the Final Four, this time as part of NCAA Division III.

Looking forward to watching the Generals try really hard to knock off one of the big dogs again this year. It always entertains me when it happens and I enjoy every .500 year or better. And with that, I think I've put up my annual contribution to the ODAC basketball boards!

Maybe if the Generals start with a good OOC record I'll come back again before it all starts to fade away.

Please don't go. I love reading what you post on the football board. And with a longer season and more games, basketball offers more opportunities for you to contribute.

Well, thanks. Part of the reason I don't post that much here is I'm not really a basketball guy. I never really learned the X's and O's, so I just can't contribute anything besides the obvious. But I do enjoy reading this board, it's fun to see the ODAC as one of the best conferences in the country, instead of a lightly regarded one, like my two main interests of football and soccer.

I wanted to introduce a feature we have on D3hoops.com this season: ODACcess. Two writers who wrote for the Mid-Majority are still interested in writing about basketball even though that site is going under, and they identified the Old Dominion Athletic Conference as an area they want to focus on. So they'll be watching a game on each campus this year, getting the behind-the-scenes stories, etc.

This is going to be pretty cool. Here's their introduction:

Your reasons for not posting about hoops are the same as mine for not posting about football. I share your interest in soccer. First watched it at R-MC in the 60's then really fell in love with it as a Peace Corps volunteer in Brazil. I don't follow it very closely at any level now, but do go to some D3 games out here in Saint Louis.

I grew up playing soccer and watching football. Oddly enough now I'd now rather go to a D3 football game than any other level, but I'd rather watch a professional soccer game (live or on TV) than any other level of soccer. And yes, I count MLS as I'm probably one of the few people in the country actively looking for the games. Funny how we change as we grow. My dad was big in basketball, so I used to watch a lot with him as a kid, but I didn't get his size nor have the quickness to play that game.
