I'm with you; if Dowell, Bowne and Cvijanovic were back I think the HSC squad could be really, really good. Kasse would not be averaging over 20 points and he would not have to, opposing teams would not be able to double down and the outside game would be much better. If's, and's and but's ...... the fact is, those kids are not on the team and HSC only goes about 8 deep.... only 3 deep under the basket which is really a killer

I generally agree with what you've said -- we're not looking at teams the caliber of the 2003 Tiger Final Four team of Monroe, Randall, Gregory, Brooks, Holman, Willson, Jackson, McKeag, Patrick, Thompson, Gunn, etc, or the 2003 Yellow Jacket Final Four team (whose players I can't as easily name off the top of my head for some reason  :) but they had Mills, Bergmann, Smith, Brunt, Stein, and Wansley).

Nevertheless, I think that the ODAC conference champ will have a real good shot of winning the first tournament game in a field of 58 teams.  Winning the second game and getting into the sectional will be harder ... it depends on what the pairings are and who is hot at the time.  It just gets tougher after that, which makes the Tigers' sectional victory in 2003, with teams there like Randolph-Macon, Illinois Wesleyan, and Wisconsin-Oshkosh, a tremendous accomplishment and a great memory.

That was a fantastic year for both R-M and H-S.  Appreciate the list of R-M players! :)

I believe that Mr. Loessel is just pointing out that you shouldn't count your chickens and that HSC has bigger fish to fry (love the food clichés). HSC was 1 pt away from an 0-3 week. NCAA talk is premature. Post away.

Umm, then the current poll results would reflect that "almost 0-3 week," with people feeling R-MC and VWC would be dancing in six weeks.

I still don't get why that question can't be asked and why, with half of the season complete, people can't make a meaningless prediction.

The point of the poll was generate discussion regarding who will come out of the ODAC with the automatic bid, and if anyone else would get an at-large invite.

Vote in a message board poll.  Live a little.

And I say that with a realistic belief that the conference champion could very well be someone other than RMC, HSC, or VWC.

You do realize that H-SC, R-MC and VWC are a combined 19-1 versus the other seven ODAC schools so far this year?

Sure, there might be another upset or two, but history says it won't happen in the ODAC tournament.

Going by the final regular season standings, here is who played in the ODAC championship game the past 10 years:

1996: 1 beat 3
1997: 2 beat 7
1998: 1 beat 2
1999: 1 beat 2
2000: 2 beat 1
2001: 2 beat 1
2002: 3 beat 1
2003: 1 beat 2
2004: 2 beat 3
2005: 2 beat 1

So the only school to make the final game who didn't have at least the third-best record in the conference was Lynchburg in 1997.

I'll go ahead and side with history when creating a poll.

Kid,

You may not have many voters, but I think you've generated a lot of discussion!

eh...
Polls generally stifle discussion rather than stimulate it.  They are a substitution for analysis and dialogue.  It gives some people a quite "out" for voting for their home team instead of challenging them to write something in depth.  If you want to stimulate discussion, pose an interesting question and see if anyone picks up the idea.

Oh, I'm not so sure.  I've seen both polls and posed questions stimulate discussion.  Each technique seems to add flavor to the room.  To me, a good mix of both "conversation starters" is the way to go.

9 and 4 for my first week back isnt a bad mark. Two losses being upsets with HSC losing twice (hopefully, we got the losing bug off our backs). Here are my picks:

Wednesday, January 18
Bridgewater @ Washington & Lee  BC
Emory & Henry @ Guilford  GC  Bonus 250
Virginia Wesleyan at Hampden-Sydney HSC by 10

Saturday, January 21
Eastern Mennonite @ Bridgewater  BC
Hampden-Sydney @ Emory & Henry  HSC
Guilford @ Lynchburg   GC
Roanoke @ Randolph-Macon  RMC
Washington & Lee @ Virginia Wesleyan  VWC

Sunday, January 22
Washington & Lee @ Randolph-Macon   RMC
Roanoke @ Virginia Wesleyan   VWC

Ralph Turner

Last Friday night, I was channel surfing when I came across NBC's Most Outrageous Videos, 7pm CST.

There, on the screen, was the Guilford "Hail Mary" from the R-MC game!

It is still as remarkable now as it was that night!

mybleedinghands

do you mean the should have been espy winning shot?!  ;)

mybleedinghands

by the way, VWC is actually in a tie for 30th in the poll

Wednesday, January 18
Bridgewater @ Washington & Lee
I just got a feeling that the Generals are ready to finally win a close one against the Eagles at Warner.
Emory & Henry @ Guilford
It will be entertaining as the two teams turn over the ball at a ODAC record clip.  total turnovers 70  total points 275
Virginia Wesleyan at Hampden-Sydney
JWW is a superior human being.

Saturday, January 21
Eastern Mennonite @ Bridgewater
Steelyglen's iron will to prevail over the emus will make the difference.
Hampden-Sydney @ Emory & Henry
Bob Johnson may suit up himself to take a turn in the rotation, but Sydney will get back in the W column at the end of the day.
Guilford @ Lynchburg
The Hornets can't match up as long as < is on the bench.
Roanoke @ Randolph-Macon
I've got to make up points on the pick'em field somewhere.
Washington & Lee @ Virginia Wesleyan
Maybe a nice seafood buffet will compensate the Gennies for the long trip.

Sunday, January 22
Washington & Lee @ Randolph-Macon
The Gennies had too much seafood at the Beach.
Roanoke @ Virginia Wesleyan
Roanoke is a spent force after upsetting the Yellow Jackets.  Besides, JWW is a superior human being.
