A picture of the All-Sports Cafe.  During a WV vs. VA Tech game, finding a parking spot is more problematical.
Thanks for the ASC photo.  From what I hear about future schedules, parking for WVU vs. VPI will no longer be a problem.  :(

Talk about a losing streak! Peter Warren reports that the NY Nationals still have not won a game :-[ He's averaging about 15 points a "game" and still having a lot of fun. They are looking for a replacement for one of the guys who broke his ankle. They have already played about 28 games since December 26. They will be in Phoenix and Tucson this weekend and Pete will be able to kick back at his older brother's house in Tucson. His older brother, by the way, is a HSC graduate, so tonight is a REALLY big game in the Warren household!

You are referring to jdubyadubyatwo?

Yes, Algernon, his name is John Wheeler Warren, Jr. and we call him Jay. He lives in Tucson and oversees his empire: three companies and assorted real estate holdings. We are depending on him for our retirement ;D

Jeloesel--Thanks for your picture of A-SC.  Ansel Adams couldn't have done any better with as beautiful of a subject. ;D

FYI-the Randolph-Macon/Roanoke game falls upon the day Macon is choosing to rededicate Crenshaw Gym with it's improvements.  Bonus for Roanoke or for Randolph-Macon?

JWWI .... It sounds like JWWII is doing well out there in the desert.  I hope that he feels good about the years he spent at HSC.  It's a shame that he wasn't able to talk his little brother into being a Tiger.

I am going to play devil's advocate here and say that the level of ODAC play as a whole has gotten better.  I say that the top two or three teams are about where they always are in regards to talent.  Correct me if I am wrong, and I very well may be, but besides 2003 what other year or years has an ODAC team really been dominate in the NCAA's in the last ten years.  Again, I could be way off but I do recall top ODAC teams losing in the first two rounds of the tournament.  HSC and RMC were always in the top ten early in the year, but never really made too much noise in the tournament.  Now this is all a recollection of when I was still a student so I apologize if I am way off here because I didn't do any research to support my argument.

Algernon - send me an e-mail sometime and I'll give you all the details about the recruiting efforts of HSC and RMC when it came to Peter Warren. Yes, Jay got an excellent education at HSC and credits his success today to it. He and his mates still get together a couple of times each year.

Since the 93-94 Season, HSC has this NCAA tournament resume:

1 National Championship Appearance (1999)
2 Final Four Appearances (1999, 2003)
3 Elite Eight Appearances (1995, 1999, 2003)
5 Sweet Sixteen Appearances (1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2003)

Pretty impressive, especially the 1999 and 2003 teams.  Just to clarify one of Algernon's previous posts, Macon didn't make it to the Final Four in 2003, but it sure was nice having the Tiger's win that sectional in Crenshaw Gym.  Nothing better than cutting down the nets in Macon's gym.  But RMC has had some success in the postseason in recent history.  Other than HSC and RMC, no other ODAC teams have made runs in the tournament recently.

I do think the level of play in the ODAC is down, but I don't think it's as bad as some might believe.  I think the Tigers are down, but only because of relative youth and lack of depth in the post.  They need a consistent post player to take some of the pressure off Kaase.  I'm not worried about the HSC guards because they have plenty of talent and they'll get out of this shooting slump they are in.

I also think if VWC keeps playing the basketball they are capable of, they have the potential to go very deep in the tournament.  They just have too much talent, speed, and athleticism.

Macon is playing great basketball as usual, and I believe they are the best team in the ODAC because they have two of the best post players in the league and they play great defense.  However, I think they will need more production from their guards to have any success in the post season.

Those are just my thoughts about the top of the ODAC this season.  Might have been a little long for a first post

In the recent past, only 16 of 48 teams (1/3rd) make it past the first 2 rounds of the NCAA tournament.  Prior to 1998, there were 64 teams in the tournament, so only 1/4th made it past the first 2 rounds to the sectional.  Given that so few teams make it past the first two rounds, doing so is a huge accomplishment.

Looking at the last 12 years year of play, I think that the ODAC has been among the 10 most dominant conferences in the country.  Not only has HSC made 5 trips to the Sweet Sixteen over the past 12 years, but RMC has made 2 trips and Roanoke and Bridgewater have also been there once.  So the ODAC has been represented in the Sweet Sixteen by 9 teams over the past 12 years!

1994:  HSC advances to the Sweet Sixteen, losing to St. Thomas at St. Thomas
1995:  HSC advances to the Elite Eight, losing to eventual National Champion, Wisconsin-Platteville at HSC
1996:  Roanoke advances to the Sweet Sixteen, losing to Illinois Wesleyan, the eventual 3rd place team
1997:  Bridgewater advances to Sweet Sixteen, losing to eventual National Champion, Illinois Wesleyan
1998:  HSC advances to the Sweet Sixteen, losing to John Carroll at Hope College
1999:  HSC loses the National Championship game in Salem by 1 point in double overtime
2000:
2001:
2002:  RMC advances to Sweet Sixteen, losing to eventual National Champion, Otterbein, at Otterbein
2003:  HSC advances to the Final Four in Salem
2003:  RMC advances to Sweet Sixteen, losing to Wisconsin-Oshkosh at home
2004:

Referring to the November 30th GC victory over E&H (147-136) at Emory, "Emory & Henry's Lance Reasbeck, who is no longer on the team, scored a game-high 32 points."

Perhaps this is old news to everyone else, but I didn't know Reasbeck wasn't still on E&H's team until I just read the pregame story on Guilford's website.  Did he transfer?

Good ole academics!!  At least in DIII, they're still around.

For the record, and just for tonight, GO TIGERS.

Jacketlawyer,

I know it is early, but are you going to Crenshaw on February 11 to celebrate your birthday a day late?  Too bad the ODAC tourney is a week later or you could really celebrate.

Affirmative.  If I can get my sweaty digits on a ticket, that is.  Tickets for that game are tough to come by every year.
