Not sure anyone saw this: https://www.gowasps.com/sports/mbkb/2018-19/releases/20190226g8xgua

Wow I thought he'd go back to Hampden Sydney.  Wilson will be missed he did a excellent job at Emory and Henry. Good luck to whoever gets the Emory and Henry job it doesn't seem like one of the easiest ODAC jobs, mainly because of its location.

I think there is a lot of assumption he was going back to HSC, right? Maybe they talked to him, I don't really know ... and that's the point: who really knows.

I was at the Guilford watch party today.  Most of us were expecting a trip to ATL with Maryville in the mix instead of Wittenberg.  With that said, some strong matchups and anybody's pod to win.  The Guilford players and coaches were excited to be able to host.  Maryville is going to Marietta ... a trip GC made in 2017.

I don't remember two ODAC teams hosting before, but it could have happened.  Good luck to both teams.

And thanks to your Quakers for preventing that pod from being the most boringly-nicknamed collection of four teams in college basketball history. ;)
You're welcome.  Could have been worse if Hampden-Sydney, DePauw or Trinity (TX) had beaten out Emory.  lol

... or if Bridgewater, Juniata, and/or Mary Washington had beaten out Wittenberg and Sewanee.

Eagles and Tigers, Tigers and Eagles,
Why can't these schools be Lizards or Beagles?
True, but I went with cats since the Tigers had an early 2-1 lead.

Any thoughts on who or when the HSC opening will be filled considering the E&H news release?

They would like to have a new coach named by the end of March. Obviously, if they can have one named before then I assume they will.

David Willson was the top choice, and they were allegedly going very hard after him, but I got the impression that the interest wasn't overly mutual. I hear his wife is quite well off financially so $$$ likely didn't really make any difference to him. I am kind of surprised to see him leave for a high school job, though I have been told by some folks that know much more about HS basketball than I do that MUS is a good job. Maybe he just didn't enjoy recruiting? He certainly would join a long list of coaches that don't.

Austin Shaver, assistant at William & Mary and son of Tony Shaver, has been a named rumored about for a long while now and in all likelihood goes from the #2 choice to the #1 choice with this news. I know another name as well but I'm not just going to wildly toss it out there. I only mentioned Shaver because him as a target is one of the worst kept secrets in sports.

Shaver would certainly be a hire that would go over well with alumni and people who were around during Tony Shaver's days. I can imagine that would be the type of hire that would energize the people that were old enough to remember what the glory days of H-SC basketball. That's not to say the alumni weren't engaged or energized. Dee really seemed to do an excellent job with the alumni, but piling up losses doesn't help.

The quality of the local schools around Hampden-Sydney is a big issue for coaches, and their wives, with children.  I hope H-SC reaches out to Mike Lonergan, ex-Catholic and GW coach.  Got run out of GW and might be considered slightly damaged goods, but can coach 'em up.   Kind of nice to post something about Tiger basketball after a long hiatus - was living by Momma's old rule:  if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

Mike Lonergan won a national championship at Catholic. You don't get to cut down the net on the last night of the season if you don't know how to coach. And the recent Deadspin piece about Lonergan basically exonerates him with regard to the mess at George Washington.

I think end of March is a bit of a stretch. With the NCAA Tournament going on, not many searches would be complete or good (assistant coaches and such).

Usually early to mid-April is when the run of hirings begins at the earliest.

I think the HSC job is going to be difficult to fill. Program is really bad, cost to enroll is really high and its location will not help if you have kids needing a good HS education.

Hope I'm wrong but many ODAC schools have an advantage based on the factors listed.

I'm hoping Mike Lonergan applies. How many times do you have an opportunity to hire a D3 national championship coach ?

And by-the-way; congrats to RMC and Guilford College. Go have fun and enjoy the experience.

Fuqua School seems pretty well reviewed, and H-SC gets numerous students from there that have excelled. I even employed some of them in the Sports Information office. Only about $10K a year for upper school tuition, so pretty affordable for a private school. Though if diversity of student population is important well then it would be a non-starter. I'd guess that is the case with most private secondary schools though.

Public schools aren't the best, though a lot that can afford to send their kids to private schools send them there, rather that be Fuqua or elsewhere. Though numerous current coaches send their kids to PE schools, as does H-SC President Stimpert.

Scotth

$10k per year tuition on a coaches salary is not going to be easy especially if you have multiple children. PE system is not the best but seemingly has worked well for many kids of HSC employees.

I will not post any more on the new b'ball coach but I do look forward to getting the right person in the seat and getting this situation in the rear view mirror.

Again, good luck to both RMC & Guilford this weekend. I know Hasa is in heaven with his Quakers hosting and I'm certain RMC followers are as well. Give 'em hell.

Money? Geography? Travel?  And on top of the Emory and Henry women's team getting shafted in the selection process of the NCAA tournament.

Well, E&H did, but Guilford won 20 games, finished first (of 13) teams in the ODAC and BEAT E&H BY 20.  We were never even in the post-season discussion.  One awful  quarter cost the Quakers the NCAA.
