That game is "Paul and Charlotte Webb Scholarship Night". Here's a really great article about it from the ODU website: https://odusports.com/news/2024/11/18/minium-odu-and-randolph-macon-meet-next-tuesday-to-honor-former-coach-paul-webb

As most people on this sight probably know, Paul Webb coached at RMC, then at ODU. During my years at RMC I remember Coach Webb as having the calmest sideline demeanor of any basketball coach I've ever seen.

Here's why the game is happening: "Both schools have begun endowments to honor both Paul and Charlotte Webb. ODU is endowing a scholarship in both their names while RMC, which does not offer scholarships, has begun an endowment that will benefit its basketball program."

This is cool to honor Coach Webb and his wife.  I remember my days in college, I had a good friend who went to ODU. We would go to a lot of the basketball games. I also remember the Sun Belt tournament being held at the Hampton Coliseum back in the days when ODU, VCU and UAB were conference members and consistently in the top 25 polls. That was good basketball!

Tigers pick up the big road win at CNU, 74-71.  It was an ugly win, but a good one.  The Tigers darn near handed the game back to the Captains at the end.  Brazil was having a rough game and then turned into ... Brazil - 22 points, 3 assists, 1 TO.  Fernald had a double - double with 14 and 11, including 2-2 from 3.  The Tigers defense is picking up!  They shut down CNU's All-American Jahn Hines who had only 6 points.

Extra long 6'9" Alex Cannon got a career high 15 minutes.  He blocked 3 shots and affected others, adding an extra dimension to the Tiger defense.  Hamilton Campbell added ball handling, created some offense, and got to the free throw line for 7 of his 9 points.

Good news for H-SC fans: the Tigers are still not hitting on all cylinders.  Coach Kimbrough is still experimenting with his subbing and the players are getting used to each other.

The ODAC basketball season officially gets going tonight with W&L at Roanoke.

Big win for Roanoke tonight 98-64.  I didn't get to start watching this until the second 10 minutes into the second half and it was already a 30 point game by then.  Roanoke seems to be getting better each game.  Roanoke is off until next Tuesday...then their next game is at Hampden Sydney  :o

^^^In other action involving ODAC teams:

Averett wins at William Peace 60-48.

EMU downs Messiah at home in OT 86-76. Messiah led that game from the 13 minute mark of the first half until EMU tied it at 71 with just under two minutes to go. Neither team scored for the remainder of regulation, but it was all EMU in OT.

There was a crazy ending to the Guilford/Greensboro game played on a neutral court. The Quakers had a one point lead and Greensboro missed a shot to win, Guilford got the rebound and apparently in the jubilation threw the ball out of the court before time expired. The officials gave Greensboro the ball with 0.7 seconds on the clock. On the inbounds play the Greensboro player who received the pass turned and made a 3 pointer, but the officials ruled he didn't get it off in time, so Guilford won 59-58. I watched the final play a second time and the officials got it right.

Last 2 games haven't been good for Guilford.  The loss to Emory could be written off as running into a ridiculously hot shooting team.  But combining it with a 1 point win over 0-4 Greensboro? I guess it is a cross town rivalry, but Greensboro had lost twice to preseason ODAC #13 EMU. It might concern Quaker fans that they are not exhibiting much depth.  Only 1 freshman, and no sophomore, has gotten PT.  Their top 8 in minutes played: 6 seniors or grad students, 2 juniors.  The future is now.

I'm not sure what Roanoke's win over W&L says about the Maroons.  It does clarify my thought that the Generals are in for a long season.  Chris McHugh is a good coach and they will execute as well as they can, but they are a physically small team.  No height, no power.  Nobody who is consistently hard to guard.  They will have to fight to make it to the ODAC tournament. Back door cuts and 3 point shots only get you so far. The Maroons are looking to break out of the second tier in the ODAC.  Last season, they did not win a game against VWU, GC, R-MC or H-SC.  Roanoke's early competition has been weak with the exception of Eastern, however the Maroons have beaten all of the weaker teams by huge margins.  So they are still on track for a successful season.

I'm pretty surprised that Guilford almost lost to a team that's now 0-6. Sounds like it was a great game though.

This is looking like it will be the most competitive ODAC season in quite a few years, unless H-SC or VWU manage to excel. We don't know much about Shenandoah, Bridgewater, Lynchburg, Randolph, or Ferrum yet. Looking forward to seeing how it unfolds.

RMC (1-2) plays tonight at Mary Washington (2-2). The Eagles losses are to VWU and Marietta. One of their wins (by 26 points) is over pre-season #20 Maryville which is 3-2 at this point. Those three wins are by a combined 11 points. Hard to know what to make of all that.

Greek Tragedy

Unless H-SC manages to excel? Do they need to excel more than already beating RMC and beating #5 CNU on the road? Brazil is the only returning starter. Pretty impressive so far.

Whoa, whoa, way too early for that excelling talk.
The Tigers just gotta play 'em one day at a time.
All those new guys are just happy to be here. Hope they can help the ball club.
Those rookies just wanna give it their best shot and, the good Lord willing, things will work out.

I think it's pretty obvious HSC is the top dog but after that anyone might be able to beat anyone this season.

I kept an eye on the Mary Washington v R-MC game while the wife watched something on the tube.  The Jackets gutted out a win in a low scoring contest, 58-55.  The biggest lead in the game was 7 for MW with 4:36 to go in the first half; they didn't score again in the half and the game was tied at 23.  The MW announcers frequently extolled the Eagle defense.  Its good, but the Jackets are quite accustomed to that level of defense, or better, from their ODAC foes, so I figured they would find a way to win.  It helped that MW's leading scorer, Zack Blue, had one of those nights when the basket had a lid: 0 for 11.  He scored 2 last night and 3 against VWU; he may not want to see any more ODAC teams.

Yeah, I watched the whole thing.  Seemed like the teams were pretty evenly matched.  RMC's defense was slightly better, but they really struggled on offense.  I felt like UMW was the better team - but obviously both squads will have to improve quite a bit before March if they want to have an impact.
