Do we have a consensus for FOY?

I didn't put a poll up because only two R-MC players were nominated.

So I guess just pick the better of the two. :)

Were they David Carlson and Justin Short?

Although not a freshman, or a basketball player, I vote for myself as Freshman of the Year.

OK justafan02, if you can show up tomorrow night and eat that delicious banquet food, then we'll give you the award ::)

The arrangements are in place for the annual trip to Salem.  I'm not too sure about the gathering of posters, however.  I'm afraid that I do not want to expose the little Tigerfans to that beer-spitting behavior of Jacketlawyer.  I've been training them to keep it down.

Too bad!  Haven't seen the little Tigerfans in a while.  Or for that matter, TigerFanette. ;D

Still arranging the final pieces of the posters' gathering.  We were thinking about making it between the first and second games, though instead of between second and third.  Will keep everyone posted.

Quote from: tigerfanalso on February 16, 2006, 10:44:54 AMBy no means have I've given up on the Tigers but my assessment of the program is correct. I think everybody agrees the Soph class has some talent, Kasse and Prehmus for sure. I see the freshman class as being fairly weak which DOES support my response to Oldfish. You have lost your mind if you think I've given up on the Tigers but an honest assessment is, the program is not as strong as it has been in the past...

tigerfanalso - I don't think your assessment of the program is correct.  Your only praise has been for the sophomore class.  You ignore the way that Matt Green has been hitting his 3s, the contributions of Edwards and Guill, and the development of freshmen like Laakso.  As far as the Freshman go .... Laakso hardly played through the first 10 games, but he's averaging 6 points and 4 rebounds in 12 minutes of playing time over the past 3 games.

If you'll say that they're good when they're good, then go ahead and say it now, as the Tigers have a 17-7 record.  The program this year is as strong as it was in many years of the Shaver era.  Going back only 10 years, the Tigers were only 16-8 in 1996 and 18-6 in 1997 by tournament time.  Given the string of Tiger teams that won 20 or more games by tournament time between 1998 and 2004, maybe you can't remember a time when the Tigers were merely "good."  The Tigers' record over the last 5 years is still a definite recruiting tool.

The Tigers have had up-and-down recruiting years over the last 10 years.  Look at the classes that graduated in 2001 and 2002.  There were some good players in those classes, but only 1 who ever received all-conference honors (Bobby Jackson).  When they began play as freshmen in 1997 and 1998, those classes probably didn't look any better than this year's freshmen.

You know, I've noticed that while Guilford still uses the "Freshman" designation in sports settings, they have completely abandoned this nomenclature on the academic side.  In all the literature published by the college they now say "First Year Student."   I guess "Freshman" has gone the way of other gender-specific nouns such as aviatrix, actress, chairman, waitress and mailman, but sometimes it seems downright silly.  Hopefully, in basketball, FOY won't have to be abandoned for BIFY (Best in First Year).  lol  :)

By the way, from a word origin point of view, "Sophomore" is a cross beween "sophos" (the root word for sophistication) and "moros" (the root word for moron).  I guess the idea was that you're in an "in-between" state trapped beween the moronic behavior of a "freshman" and the sophistication of an "upperclassman."  Hence, sophomoric humor, for example.  Sadly, I know this state well, because I feel I have been trapped there for over 30 years!  :)

I think VA Wesleyan uses the FY verbage on their website rosters too.

So we'd be talking about who's going to get the BIFY Award .... :)

Or it could be the NOY Award  (Newcomer of the Year) ....

or, better yet, the BOY Award (Beginner of the Year) ..... :)

jdubyadubya

So, I'll ask it again, who will be BIFY?

My Uncle ( & he wasn't considered strange) used Biffy as a euphemism for Bathroom, ( others=water closet, head, can, powder room etc). So I plead with you all to please continue with FOY :o!

All good ideas, but I seriously doubt the ODAC women will award the "BOY" trophy to their "BIFY"!   :-\

It may be too late, the pin has already been removed from the hand grenade!  lol

You know, hasanova, we're never going to get a rationale answer to this one. The tournament can't get here fast enough! :)
