i don't have much disagreement with the results here, except i wouldnt ahve put laporte or townsend on the honorable mention team. i think laporte could stand to be more aggressive on the offensive end. he made some good moves that take advantage of his speed and quickness against us in the 2 games this year, but he doesn't do it enough. when we played @ roanoke he did this amazing spin move on pat prior and i was just like "wow, that was nice." in terms of statistics, he underperformed compared to his freshman year. i guess one E&H player had to make it though considering where they finished.

Scottie...

E&H deserved one player considering where they finished?  By that reasoning, neither Albright nor Bienemann would have gotten anything, considering where their team's finished.  Townsend, Albright, and Bienemann were all deserving of an honorable mention award, regardless of what team they played on or where their team finished.

Baselinejam's Quarterfinal Picks:

VWC 78 vs. EMU 64
Guilford 84 vs. E&H 95
R-MC 76 vs. BC 67
H-S 69 vs. RC 70

3sdown's Quarterfinal Picks:

VWC 81 vs. EMU 66
Guilford 103 vs. E&H 96
RMC 72 vs. BC 61
HSC 67 vs. RC 74

Good luck

<,
I strongly suggest you decline any invitation to a quail hunt that includes Mr. LaPorte or Mr. Townsend in the party.   :)

At this afternoon's gathering at the All-Sports Cafe, I'll raise a glass of brew to the entire group of honorees.

I have said many times that I did not think Ben Strong deserved to be a First Team member.  I have also said that if he were voted on by the coaches, I could see why, as long as the ONLY reason wasn't because he led the league in scoring.  He has gotten better at rebounding, which is something I've said he had to get better at for me to consider him first team material.  And although it does not matter to the voting results, not that it ever did, I will just throw this out:

Scoring            Advantage Strong
Rebounding     Advantage Michael
Assists/TO       Advantage Michael
FG%                Advantage Strong (he attempted more, and made about that many more)

FT%                Advantage Michael (attempted less, but such a difference, I don't think it would have mattered)

Steals               Advantage Michael
Blocks               Advantage Strong

Michael has the statistical edge in 4 out of of the 7.  He had 7 double-doubles compared to 4 for Strong.  In two games against Macon, Michael averaged 16 points and 10.5 rebounds.  Strong averaged 16 points and 4.5 rebounds.  In two games against Wesleyan, Michael averaged 17.5 points and 9 rebounds.  Strong averaged 21.5 points and 3.5 rebounds.  In those four games, Michael averaged 16.75 points and 9.75 rebounds.  Strong averaged 18.75 points and 4 rebounds.  Michael had a double-double in 3 of the 4.  Strong in 0 of the 4.  In two games against EMU, Michael averaged 16 points and 7.5 rebounds.  Strong averaged 16 points and 10.5 rebounds.  Against H-SC, Michael averaged 14.5 points and 6 rebounds.  Strong averaged 19.5 points and 8 rebounds.  In those four, each had a double-double.  Against the top two teams in the league, Michael outperformed Strong moreso than Strong outperformed him against H-SC (the 3rd team), and EMU, the 8th.  I included them because of Sager and Kaase being on the first team as well.  In fairness, Michael averaged 18 points and 6 rebounds against GC, and Strong averaged 19 points and 7 rebounds against BC.  But that is not a huge advantage for Strong.

Again, Strong is the one that actually MADE the first team.  Congratulations to him and all of the other winners.  I just think the case for Michael getting it over Strong is very good, and, in my opinion, shows he deserved it more.

i always like these debates, and as an outsider who has no allegiance, i'd like to chime in

first, i suggest you look at conference only stats, to put both players on an even playing field - here's how your analysis would change

Scoring            Advantage Strong (19.2/16.4)
Rebounding     Advantage Michael (8.6/7.1)
Assists/TO       Advantage Michael - push (.69 for each)
FG%                Advantage Strong (.564/.511)
FT%                Advantage Michael - Strong - (.714/.706)
Steals               Advantage Michael (21/11)
Blocks               Advantage Strong (28/26)

Michael strong has the statistical edge in 4 out of of the 7 and michael in 2 of the 7.

after i did this analysis, i ran both through my pvr calculator using conf only stats:
pvr=(ppg+rpg+spg)1.5 + (apg+bpg)2 - (topg)1.5

strong = 43.26
michael = 41.89

this indicates 2 players who were very close statistically - i would guess that there were some additional factors (team winning % and the fact that strong put up slightly better #'s in 4.7 mpg less than michael, chief among them) that influenced the voting

>>  Michael has the statistical edge in 4 out of of the 7.

You have a good point there about Clay Michael's strengths.  I saw him play twice.  He was smooth, effective, accurate, smart, quick and solidly built.  What a pleasure to watch (except that we were playing against him).  Rebounding counts for a lot, and Michael was a monster on the offensive board all season.  The team record might have counted against him a bit.  Could the scholar-athlete award have strangely worked against him?  I surely hope not.  He is a senior, and deserves recognition.

Strong did have a higher shooting percentage counting both non-conference and conference games.  I 'll also say not all of Strong strengths show up in the stats; shots do get altered.

I'll bet neither of them cares much;  they just want to win.

Anyway, this Guilford fan can't claim to be an impartial observer at all. Not even trying, really.  I glad neither of these guys is done playing yet.  ;)

We're leavning shortly for Roanoke.

Loesel-
I'm sitting down here in an Arkansas ice storm, minding my own business...reading what the "gurus" have to say about the tourney action that is getting ready to tip off and...boom!...You offer an RC that I sent you last year (vintage RC, at that!) as collateral on a wager you make with the nondiscriminating Algernon. Obviously, you hoarded the "booty" I sent and left Algernon and Steely hanging. Is that considered "war profiteering?" Then, you ask me to pay you again for LC's woes this season. I got an idea...drink the RC you have left from last year and eat one of the moonpies that are undoubtedly also in your wager collection archives!
Now, Algernon...you have to get in on the action as well...still complaining about Scottie's substitution of a Dr.Pepper last year. You simply have no grounds for whining as Herr Loesel has photographic evidence of you not only accepting the Dr.Pepper, but consuming it on the spot with a voracity seldom seen at the Salem Civic Center!
I would like to close by publicly thanking Steely for not taking part in this cheap attack on my character and, as a show of my appreciation, offer him beverages (of his choice) at this afternoon's Sport's Bar gathering. Just put the beverages on Loesel's tab! In the case Steely does not attend, I hope he will enjoy the said beverages at a watering hole of his choice and send the tab to Loesel!
Everyone have a great time today and all-weekend and may your teams prosper!
Below is proof of the copious bounty that Loesel received last year!!!

xcoach,
I know better than to drink coffee while reading D3hoops.  My only consolation is that it wasn't vintage Stan Bright RC or Warren Thompson Yuengling that I spat all over the screen.   ;D

Expectorating, instead of swallowing, Yuengling can get you arrested here in Pennsylvania. There's a strictly-enforced prohibition against insulting one of the Commonwealth's protected historical treasures.

But does the strong arm of Pennsylavania Beer Police extend all the way to Roanoke, Virginia?  Please advise before this afternoon's gathering at the All Sports Cafe.   :)

Yes, the Commonwealth has eyes and ears everywhere. Pennsylvania has long been engaged in warrantless wiretaps. In fact, you, personally, because of your association with Pottsville's finest products of the brewer's art, are likely in the Beer Police data-base. So ... watch yourself and warn your bar-buddies accordingly.
