Posters - VWC vs. Guilford is coming up on Sunday, January 7. Should be a huge game. VWC grad Tom Palumbo vs. his nemesis, Macedo and crew, Ben Strong vs. Brandon Adair, VWC's all-time leading scorer. Look for a physical game with each team going to the foul stripe many times. The Batten Center will be rockin' on the 7th!
I asked Coach Palombo once if he had any mixed feelings when the Quakers play the Marlins and he said, as you might expect, that he is totally focused on Guilford winning when these two schools play.  Right now, I think he is looking only at the December 30 game at Methodist, but it's understandable for us fans to focus on big games on the horizon.  It's a long drive from Greensboro, but who knows - it would be an interesting weekend trip.  :)

VWC still at #3, Averett up to #12 and CNU now at #25 in today's D3hoops.com poll.  Unbeaten Guilford Quakers garnered 14 points in this poll, up from 3 last week.

Just read the Greensboro News & Record sports section during lunch and thought it was interesting that a very large color photo from the Guilford/Shenandoah game was on page 1 and another smaller, but still substantial, color photo was on page 3.  You have to admit, #42 has a name made for headlines like "Quakers starting Strong."  lol  Take it from me, this is a lot more coverage than the Quakers normally get, so maybe the perfect start is grabbing some attention ... On the flip side, I'm also savvy enough to know no ACC teams were playing, the Panthers are giving playoff ticket refunds, the NBA had no fights last night and it's a Tuesday six days before Christmas.   Don't, however, as the saying goes, look a gift horse in the mouth ... I'll take it!  Peace

Beautiful post Nova...all the way around.

And yes while it is easy to look ahead at the VA Wesleyen game, the Quakers have a very tough road game the night before at Macon.  While they have had some success there recently, Macon is a tough place to play (I can attest to that), and a win there would be very big.  I hope to get two wins that weekend, but going one and one would not be horrible either.  That would give Guilford a 2-1 record at what a believe are the three hardest games of the year to win (@ Sydney, @ Macon, and @ Wesleyen).  I know I am looking ahead but it is conference play that really concerns me and that is Guilfords next conference opponents.

Thank you, cooper.  I hope you're enjoying your Christmas break!  This Guilford team must truly "take one game at a time," but it is tempting to peek at the upcoming schedule.  Let's face it, four straight road games in nine days at Methodist, Averett, Randolph-Macon and Virginia Wesleyan is a DIII version akin to the famed "tobacco road" trip through North Carolina's Big Four.  The Quakers could be 7-4 - or 11-0 - or any combination in between when the bus heads back to Greensboro on Jan. 7.  No matter what, it'll give the Quakers, the USASAC and the ODAC some head-to-head ideas of this year's pecking order.  Looking at the overall ODAC schedule, Guilford shares that Jan. 6-7 weekend at RMC and VWC with E&H.  Here's hoping the Wasps run the Marlins pretty hard on Saturday before the Quakers get to the beach on Sunday!  lol  Peace

Can't seem to read the dialogue between Coopersharpe and Hasanova without reliving that full-court, last microsecond shot made by Guilford at R-M a couple of years ago.  Which I got treated to again, and again, and again, on CNN. :P

VWC fans, take the golf clubs to Belton for the UMHB tourney.  We should have some good weather and there are plenty of courses around.

HSU is pretty "dinged" up.  Two key players are injured (Dinkins and  James Peters) and Zach Pickelman has a bad wrist and is playing thru it.  I wish that the same HSU team that beat McMurry were playing in this tourney.

Jacketlawyer, "the" shot gets better with age.  :)  It's actually too bad it's on film.  If it wasn't, it might be a left-handed 150-footer off Ben Strong's head with even less time on the clock!  Never mind the fact that the court isn't that long!  lol  I was listening on the net that night and had already resigned myself to a loss.  I'm sure my incredulous posts at the end are still on the ODAC thread.  When I watched Sports Center later that night, I said "alright, we got #9."  Then they replayed it at #7 and #5 and # 3 and #1!  I know RMC was bummed they lost, but that was priceless publicity for Macon, Guilford, Snipes and the ODAC.  The other thing some of our readers might not remember is Snipes made another shot for a Greensboro TV crew the next day!  Too funny!  PS I still have the video if you want to see it again!  :)

Hey, it's a classic no matter who was playing!

algernon

On the subject of Guilford ..... they have certainly had a great season so far, with their 7-0 record.  However, the 6 DIII wins that they've recorded to date come against opponents with a combined 17-24 record, with only 2 wins against good opponents (Greensboro and Hampden-Sydney) ....  so, as others have noted, the next stretch of their schedule will certainly tell the tale:
  @ Methodist (4-2)
  @ #12 Averett (9-0)
  @ RMC (5-4)
  @ #3 Virginia Wesleyan (7-0)

Against these 4 teams, Guilford will be doing fairly well to win 2 games.  If they win 3 of the 4, they will shoot up into the Top 25.

Algernon,

VWC lost to Averett so they have at least one loss.
