Do teams like VWC, HSC, and RMC have to think about getting "quality wins" early in the year in case they do not get the ODAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament?

I just created a topic in the South Region for ODAC Game Updates. Please post in-game updates instead of in this topic!

THANKS for that.

The Generals have played talented teams tough in the past.  Last year, the Generals took the Citadel down to the wire in Charleston.  In recent years, they have played Hampden-Sydney tough at home.  Eventually, they are going to start pulling off some upsets.  Why not tonight?

For teams that have a legitimate chance of making the NCAA Tournament, they do need to schedule tough teams, but not too tough. I remember a couple years ago or so Michigan State had a murderer's row for a non-confernece schedule and it nearly caused them to miss the NCAA Tournament. Then there's also Texas A&M from last year who had an entirely cupcake non-conference schedule and didn't get in the NCAA Tournament.

Yes they have played some teams tough, but in the past two seasons, how many wins did they get against good teams? In the past three years, they have beaten just ONE team with a winning record.  Sure, they'll eventually beat a team with a winning record rather its this weekend, later this year, or even next year, but to think they have a good chance of beating the teams in this tournament may be putting expectations a bit high. I thought last year would be the year where they pulled off those upsets, then they seemingly took a big step back last year.

Algernon...

I don't believe Ladyeagle is defining anything loosely at all.  In fact, she could not be more right.  Consider their women's basketball team.  Laura Mapp coached them for 35 years and led them to a 484-282 record.  In the past nine years, Jean Willi has led them to a 184-61 record, 20+ wins in eight of them.  Since the ODAC has had women's basketball as an official sport since 1983, BC has 2 championships and played in the title game 9 other times.  The volleyball team was started in 1975, and Mary Frances Heishman has coached them from the beginning to a 595-284 record.  Since 1983 when the league recognized volleyball officially, the Eagles have 5 championships and 8 other second place finishes.  Baseball, since 1977, leads the ODAC with 11 championships.  Since Curt Kendall took over in 1986, they have a 446-270 record, 9 of those championships and 9 regular season championships.  Although men's basketball does not have the record or the titles of H-SC, I don't think Bill Leatherman's record of 303-216 is anything to cry over.

Ladyeagle mentioned sports, not football specifically.  If those numbers and those accomplishments don't represent a "tradition of excellence" to you, then so be it.

One other question ladyeagle, and it may be totally immature of me to ask, but knowing a little bit about the Bridgewater program myself I will. Based on some of their athletes' actions in the last year, just what section of the paper do people in the valley read to see about Bridgewater athletes?

I know boys will be boys, but shouldn't some of the arrogance be toned down?

Ladyfan- u forgot to mention that Bridgewater senior Clay Michael is up for one of the more prestigious academic awards in the nation (If I remember right its the Rhodes Scholar award).  That definitely deserves some press, dont you think?  People might be able to read about that in other parts of the paper.  Not to mention that he was all-academic everytiing last year.

bcsports,

I didn't mention any one player by name. The "fans" of BC know what I was alluding to. Clay  does deserves special mention. I have watched him for three years at BC and saw a few of his high school games at Musselman. He is the poster boy of what college basketball is about. Even if BC is not your favorite team  fans should cheer his success, on and off the court.

Steelyglen,
I'm "game" for the 2005-06 version of the ODAC Pick'em.  We are playing for the usual RC and Moonpie, yes?  I'd be honored to serve as the Pick'em game picker.  I'll try to post the picks of the week on Mondays.

DenbowsRoomie

I'm game for Pick 'Em.  But without any administrative role.  We all know how that went last year, as my decline in motivation mirrored the decline in my beloved team.

How's the Pick'em work? Is it for conference games only?

gogenerals - welcome to the board Generally Tim & I need all the help we can get!

eagleslam ...

Thanks for the information about the Eagles' accomplishments in women's basketball, volleyball, and baseball.  There is quite an impressive tradition of excellence in those 3 sports!  And certainly Bill Leatherman's record is outstanding (winning nearly 60% of all of his games over nearly 20 years).

Perhaps Ladyeagle could have been more specific about which Eagles' sports involve a tradition of excellence, rather than then making a broad characterization about Bridgewater sports.  I wonder what is the Eagles' won-lost record is in all of its sports over the past 20 years.

For what it's worth, on the ODAC pages, I find that the leaders in men's sports (by # of championships) are:
1)  Lynchburg  (80)
2)  Washington & Lee  (69)
3)  Roanoke  (39)
4)  Bridgewater  (26)
5)  Hampden-Sydney  (24)

The leaders in women's sports (by # of championships) are:
1)  Washington & Lee  (56)
2)  Lynchburg  (41)
3)  Roanoke  (38)
4)  Eastern Mennonite  (27)
5)  Hollins  (20)

Overall, Bridgewater has won 34 ODAC championships and EMU has won 32 ODAC championships.

LC loses to Oneonta state 64-54

Guilford wins 95-93

VWC falls to Trinity 67-64.  The Marlins shot 50% the first half and were up 12 or 13, but lapsed defensively toward the end of the game.  Adair worked hard for his 19 points and 8 boards and was double teamed all night.  Not much help anywhere else but def. a good test for the Marlin's early and lets them know they still have a lot of work to do.

the ODAC is full of losses today! :( hopefully the conference can step it up on saturday and sunday!
