I just got thru faxing a document to the 703 area code in Virginia and the number sounded "Yankee Doodle"!

It's a sign from heaven for a McMurry mascot!  The McMurry Yankee Doodles!  Maybe just "Doods" for short!  I like it, but how would the alumni and good folks in Texas feel about it?  lol

Pat Coleman

Lynchburg actually announced interest in starting football.

I can see LC adding football, but I have never heard that EMU is interested in starting a football program.

Maybe they were joking, but someone on an ODAC board produced documentation about a feasibility study a couple of months ago.

2 things:

A. I don't hear any complaints from the ladies about having 11 teams - so why go to divisions?

B. A few years back there was some noise about W&L going to the UAA. That was shot down for travel reasons. I can't see them going to the Centennial.  W&L is centrally located; 4 schools are about an hour away, HSC 2 hrs, RM 2.5, GC & E&H 3 & VW4. I know the hoop team only missed 1 or 2 classes all season - again why change? BTW- the hoops has struggled but the other sports seem to be holding their own in the ODAC ( especially the ladies). Are you all tryin' to run us off? ???

Other evidence- W&L is 50th in the D-3 Directors Cup, the only ODAC representative ( maybe we should leave; we're too good for the ODAC ;))

Actually, they are not the only representative.  VWC is #44 in the Directors Cup, with not as many full time athletic programs.  Men's basketball and Women's soccer def. helped this with Final Four showings this year.

Kudoes to VW!

I was using the 3/16/07 list.

BTW - W&L moved up to 40th from 50th. ;D

Hasa - I think you are "safe." Maybe E&H, W&L, and VWC are in the bottom three. I think VWC was the last school to join the ODAC.....LIFO?

I agree that Guilford's "safe." ;)

I've forgotten: when did Maryville leave the ODAC?  Talk about a long ride.
I don't think the Scots have been a member since the 1980's.

Yeah, that much I know, good buddy!  If I had to guess, I'd say their last year was 1984.  We're gonna have to get Allsky on that one!
Actually, jacketlawyer, I had just finished looking it up on the ODAC website:  Maryville was listed in the final standings in men's basketball for eight years, 1981-88.

I would have had to look it up too.  I knew it was late 80's but wasn't sure of the exact year.  I admit my ODAC bias but I have said from day one that it was a mistake for them to leave the ODAC.

Haven't you heard....they moved the Mason Dixon line south. It now runs through Fredricksburg.  ;D ;D

I have always said W&L is a good fit for the ODAC. If we promise not to make any more country club jokes...will you stay?  :D

Congratulations to VWC and W&L for their showings in the Director's Cup; however, since it includes women's sports HSC has no shot of ever placing anywhere near the top.  Still fun for comparison purposes though!

Nice story in yesterday's Greensboro News & Record about Guilford's Ben Strong and Coach Tom Palombo being honored at the NABC banquet in Atlanta.  Guilford alumnus Dave Odom of the University of South Carolina asked to present their awards.  Strong, of course, is the NABC's National co-POY with Amherst's Andrew Olson and Palombo is the South Region co-COY with (I think) the coach at Centre.  I guess the only glitch was Palombo's name being misspelled in the program - must have been the same guys who did West Virginia's NIT t-shirts!  lol  :)  Again, congratulations to all!

Hasa...... It is refreshing to see nice things happen to deserving people. I have a lot of respect for the Guilford program and the awards received were certainly earned by Coach Palombo and Mr. Strong. I look forward to watching him play next year. If Mr. Kasse can return at full strength that matchup could be very exciting to watch.

On another note .... what's up the Guilford's lax program ? Was lax recently added as a sport or is it just difficult to attract talent to Greensboro. I don't follow the sport  but I saw the HSC vs. Guilford score in the paper and thought it might be a misprint.

Good luck and hope to run into to you at the f'ball game this fall !!!

I think it was Llama that broke this story.  8) Don't remember any documentation about it though.

Hey, tigerfanalso.  Thanks.  I like where the Guilford basketball program is headed as well.  What a coup to get Strong three years ago and Palombo is able to recruit, retain and train good players.  I've seen it building for a few years and hopefully the momentum will continue.  I've met Palombo and the families of many of his players and he's bringing in good people.  If Strong has another good year in 2007-08, I think the Quakers will do well.

Guilford Lacrosse?  No, not a new program.  I wish that were our only excuse, so the 17-1 whipping by HSC was not a misprint.  lol  Actually, GC's had a program for about 30 years and in the 80's had a lot of success and some All-Americans.  Since joining the ODAC, however, we are a perennial doormat.  In fact, I think we lost every ODAC match for 10-12 years until beating VWC two years ago and RMC last year.  The facilities are now good and the coach seems to be a good leader, but the roster count is always small and we just have a tough time in a league with so many Top 25 programs.  It is a little tougher to get HS lax talent in NC than it is in VA and MD, but it hasn't stopped Greensboro College.  The Quakers only seem to be able to beat the Pride about once every 7-8 years and the Pride are usually a fairly decent team.   Sadly, a typical year for GC lax is about 4-5 wins with zero or maybe one win in league play.

I'll definitely be at the football game when HSC comes to Greensboro in September.  Let me know your travel plans and I'll make sure we meet.  If the past two years are any indication, it should be a great game!
