Quote from: jdubyadubya on October 04, 2007, 12:05:41 PMDid you all know that Sputnik was no bigger than a basketball! You younger guys might want to Google "Sputnik." :D
Did the Russians use the satellite or a basketball in the 1972 Olympics?  Some of our younger readers may want to google the 1972 Olympic championship game as well.  :)

Did they have a nickname, like "Comrades in Arms" or "The Gulag Team"?

With a black and white striped jersey?  lol

There was the Director of FIBA too - that was a bad night :P
If you make every game a life and death proposition, you're going to have problems. For one thing, you'll be dead a lot. Dean Smith

Well, it was basically "add time and call something on the USA until the Russians go ahead - then run out the clock!"   :-\

What other defining moments in sports can the board come up with? How about Chris Weber's famous timeout? Or, Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics? How about Herb Score getting hit with that line drive? Someone should compile a book of "really interesting, but useless sports trivia."

Hmmm, from my personal experience, I think I could add:

The 1980 USA Olympic Hockey Team (Miracle on Ice)
NCSU's 1983 NCAA Basketball Championship (Phi Packa Attacka vs Phi Slamma Jamma)
Carlton Fisk's dramatic game 6 homer for the Red Sox versus the Reds in 1975
Doug Flutie's 1984 miracle Hail Mary pass in the Orange Bowl for BC versus the University of Miami
Appalachian State's improbable 34-32 win over Michigan this fall in the Big House
The '69 Mets
Michael Jordan's game winning shot versus Georgetown in the 1982 NCAA championship game
Joe Namath and the NY Jets beating the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III in January 1969
Christian Laettner's buzzer-beating OT shot for Duke versus Kentucky in the 1992 East Regional Final.  Blue Devils won 104-103 and advanced to the Final Four, which they won.

I'm sure there are others, but those came quickly to mind.

Brian Hamilton

I would also add...

Kirk Gibson's homer in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series off Dennis Eckersley when he came off the bench with a leg injury and won the game in the 9th

Robert Horry's 3 pointer as time expired against the Kings in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals.  That tied the series that the Lakers eventually won in 7 games.  The Lakers were down by at least 20 points earlier in the game.

Agassi vs. Sampras for the U.S Open Title in 2002 were neither man ever lost serve.  It was also Sampras' record 14th Grand Slam title (a record that will likely be broken next year by Federer barring injury).

I would also add Jordan Snipes shot versus Macon.  I know I watched that at least 30 times on the internet.  That is still impressive even if it did not garner as much attention as other memorable sports moments.

mybleedinghands

texas western over the kentucky for the championship

bosox coming back from a 3-0 deficit to win the ALCS

LC over macon in the ODAC tournament in the 03-04 season ;)

and anotehr one for us odac folk: vwc winning the title...

Well Scottie, I know you're not old enough to remember the Texas Western (aka UTEP) win over Kentucky, but I am!  lol

This is a great list you''ve got going,   Texas Western vs Kentucky is great for this listing!   And for some reason that Horry shot still annoys me.
I'd add

Jackie Robinson's first season.
Magic Johnson dominating at Center in an NBA final as a rookie.
Muhammad Ali choosing prison over fighting in a war he didn't believe in.
U.S. women's World Cup victory in 1999.  Keeper Scurry was key to the victory; Brandi Chastain provided the photo.

Aside from all the storm and drama, there's a kind of real beauty in sports at its best.
Do I get shot down if I try to add Guilford-Lincoln 2007?

mybleedinghands

bird vs. magic

sammy sosa vs. mark mcgwire

All good ones, eagleslam.  Welcome back, btw.  On the other end of the spectrum, how about British Olympic ski jumper "Eddie the Eagle" and, of course, the Jamaican bobsled team?  lol
