Bridgewater went 1 for 2 at Penn State Behrend.

Lynchburg lost to Southern Virginia, 101-66.  Last year, the Hornets won this game (in OT), so it is not a promising start at all.

Roanoke beat York (PA) and Shenandoah .... a good start for them!

The Tigers go to Averett on Tuesday evening.  Averett is the USA South's preseason #1 pick, has been ranked #16 in the Basketball Times preseason poll, and almost made the d3hoops preseason Top 25, but dropped their season opener to the Maryville Scots, 74-60.  I'm sure it'll be a great game.

I heard Medlin was hurt as he did not get into the game. He might be the best offensive forward on HSC team. He should make a huge difference with this team. He could relieve the double teams on Kaase and also consistent scorer from the outside. Defense is questionable-- at least his first year.

On a more important note, in an e-mail distributed to the LC community this afternoon:

QuoteTwo Lynchburg College basketball players were injured this morning when the small plane in which they were traveling crashed 50 miles north of New York City.

LC students Jason Early and Sean Sutherland were passengers in a plane piloted by Jason's father, Brian, when it went down near the town of Maybrook, NY.  Jason is reported to be in critical condition; Sean in stable condition.  Both were transported to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY for treatment.

Brian Early was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Authorities say the plane lost contact with the control tower at Stewart International Airport shortly before 2 a.m. after a failed first approach due to fog.  One of the passengers called "911" after the crash; approximately three hours later rescuers located the wreckage.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to these two students and their families in this time of tragedy," said Lynchburg College President Kenneth Garren.  "The LC family is here to support them in whatever ways we can, given such a traumatic event."

E-mails for Jason and Sean may be sent to Westchester Medical Center via this hospital link -  http://www.wcmc.com/body.cfm?id=1681

In addition to that release, Jason has two broken legs while Sean has at least one cracked rib, internal bleeding, and may require back surgery.

I'm sad to hear this, Scottie.  My heart goes out to those people.

Awful news about these two LC athletes.  My thoughts and prayers are with these two young men and their families.

me along with the SID are planning on doing a special insert for Wednesday's gameday program in dedication of Jason, Sean, and Mr. Early (we don't know what we'll do yet, but there are plans for something) along with a moment of silence for Mr. Early is also in the works. Both of these players were extremely well liked within the team and the LC community and are upstanding members of the LC community. The father was also very well liked, a "super fan" you could say - he would fly in to every game, home or away, and was missed on the rare occasion he couldn't make it. Although I didn't get to know Mr. Early much, it was always a fun and pleasurable experience talking to him, and from all indications he was a very successful business man and public speaker, and, judging based on how Jason turned out, must have been a pretty good father as well.

Same here. My condolences to the Early family, and I hope that Jason and Sean make a full recovery.

wow..more sad d3 news. My prayers are with the players and their families. I too have flown aircraft and can only imagine what happened.  I hope the players fully recover, physically. I hope the power of prayer helps them heal emotionally and spiritually.

My condolences to the Early family and the entire LC community.  My best wishes to the two young men during their physical and emotional recoveries.  Someone once told me "friends double our joy and divide our grief" ... and it's true.  Peace

Scottie.....here's a possibility for something to put into Wed program. It's a poem. I keep it in my wallet next to my pilot's license.  Some call it A Pilot's Poem. The correct title is:

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds -- and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of -- wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence...
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

OK, who's going to Hanes Gym Wednesday night when Guilford visits Greensboro?  Me!  Me!  lol

Today's Greensboro News & Record said the game will be free.  Is this true?  I'm not sure why GCP would do this, but thanks.  It's a tiny gym and the game will be well-attended (packed?) even with a charge for the "old" guys like me.  :)  GCQ will undoubtedly be favored, but it bothers me that GCP has four games under their belt and GCQ has not played since the Villa Julie game on the 17th.

Sludge, I'm pretty sure you and muckraker will be there.  Coopersharpe, what about you?  Go Quakers!

We'll be there, along with clan members including swampgas and spartina.  I figure, show up early.

Latest official Lc released update about Jason Early, Sean Sutherland, and the future for the team:

QuoteLC basketball players Jason Early and Sean Sutherland continue their recoveries at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York, in the wake of last Wednesday's plane crash near Maybrook, NY.

Family members say that Jason underwent successful surgery Saturday to repair his broken legs; he remains in the intensive care unit and will likely be hospitalized for another week or two.

New family information also indicates that Sean is undergoing back surgery today and could be sent home within a week assuming no complications.

LC Basketball Coach John Swickrath says "the team spoke with Jason's uncle yesterday via telephone conference call so everyone could hear the latest.  With Jason and Sean both making progress, the team decided to play our home game scheduled for this Wednesday knowing that's what these two guys would want us to do.  We will be wearing our black uniforms for the rest of the season in remembrance of Mr. Early.

Brian Early, Jason's father and pilot of the plane, was killed when the craft went down in fog last Wednesday at approximately 2 a.m. while trying to land at Stewart International Airport, about 55 miles north of New York City.

E-mails for Jason and Sean may be sent to Westchester Medical Center via http://www.wcmc.com/body.cfm?id=1681

Great news hear. At the beginning it sounded like they would be confined to the hospital for a lot longer than that - especially Jason. There will be special stuff going on priot to the game in remembrance of Brian Early and of course for Jason and Sean (although "in remembrance" isn't the best term for them two since they are still alive...). WSET (local ABC) and WDBJ (local CBS) will be at practice today for a news feature, likely will not be on the news tonight since they don't practicec until 6 pm tonight. WSLS (local NBC) also had a news feature last night on the news following the Patriots game and the text for it was on the internet as of last night if you want to check it out.
