hasanova...having banged bodies with Bob Kauffman and Pat Moriarty I can attest first hand to how tough that program was "back in the day". When Carl Scheer was your play by play guy you know things were rolling...
Bob Kauffman and Pat Moriarty were a few years before I arrived, but they still hold some school records.  Kauffman was an NBA All-Star at Buffalo and in Atlanta and was GM for the Hawks as well.  Not sure if it's true, but I heard Bob was in very poor health right now.  I wish him well.  Alumni Gym was affectionately called the "Crackerbox" and we had it rocking for the entire game.  I've heard Carl Scheer say "it's a barnburner in the Crackerbox" more than once.  lol  The football team always sat behind the opposing bench and were so close they could (and did) lean over the rail and rub the tops of their heads ....  and if an opposing player was inbounding under the basket, he better check his shoelaces before he stepped on the court.  lol

hasanova...I can hear Carl Scheer's voice screaming "...my gosh...Oshkosh" into my radio as clear as day, when Guilford went to Wisconsin and were upset by UW-Oshkosh... I want to say it was '72 . I've heard the same about Kauffman...too bad ...nice as hell guy as was Moriarty. And if you follow the Quakers it will always be Lloyd Free and not "World B". Jerry Steele was an animal (affectionately speaking) as a coach. I saw Tubby play at High Point College for his mentor J.D. Barnette. Shot that jumper on the way up and not at its apex, as one is taught... Very tough to defend... nice player though...did everything well... one of the few good players who turned out to be a very good coach!

W&L cancelled their web radio for tonight's Bridgewater game. Does B'water have a web radio braodcast?

Never mind - answered my own question -

If you make every game a life and death proposition, you're going to have problems. For one thing, you'll be dead a lot. Dean Smith

All good players and coaches that I saw in person many times.  In fact, I had Jerry's wife Kitty for my tennis PE class at Guilford.  lol  I do still say "Lloyd" more than "World," but finally gave in a bit.  Do you remember center David Smith (my father's first cousin) at Guilford and Tommy Cole at Elon?  David was an NAIA All-American and Cole used to score big on us, especially at Elon.  Also, some of our posters might like to know that Dave Odom (former WFU and current S. Carolina coach) played at Guilford (Class of '64).

Bridgewater beats W&L 64-56.  It was a hard game to watch.  Bridgewater really was having trouble putting in a shot.  Clay Michael did pretty well...not sure all the stats yet.  The guys really played down to W&L.  The Generals even were up by 1 point about 2 minutes into the second half, but that was short lived and Bridgewater lead the rest of the game.

Lets just say this, Macon is one of the best shooting teams ever assembled...

Guilford outscores E&H 147-136 on the road.  283 total points.  Quakers led 73-60 at the half and get this - 50 first-half three point attempts for E&H and zero for GC.  Two 3-point attempts for GC in the game and (30 of) 97 attempts for E&H!  I think that's a new NCAA attempts record.  Way to go Quakers!

Yeah pretty wild game in Emory.  I believe the record for 3's in one game was 86, so 97 tonight pretty much shattered that.  If not for 12-50 from 3 in the first half, it might have gone our way.  Emory came back in the 2nd half after going down by 20 or more to bring it back to 5.  Just a bad shooting first half for the Wasps.

OR you could say LC plays no defense!

Roanoke prevails over EMU in a well-played game by both teams, 79-73.  Roanoke's bench was a little deeper than the emus, and at the end it was Josh LaPorte who came through with a go-ahead bucket, a couple of clutch free throws and key rebounds.  The defense for Roanoke was good enough to create four shot clock violations during the game. Roanoke was able to hit free throws down the stretch, something that had bothered them in their earlier games, in which they were only shooting 55% in the last five minutes.  For EMU: Sager 19, Lentz 16, Whiting 10, and Arrington 10.  For the Maroons: Butler 15, LaPorte 14, Jackson 11, Dowell 11, and Peery 10.   If this is the quality of basketball these two teams are going to play this year, they will be contenders.

Yeah, I was getting worried.  I think the Wasps hit about five or six three-pointers in a row late in the game.  Sounded like Ben Strong had some dunks tonight - how did he look to you?

Hats off to Guilford...they had a great game plan and executed it.  Emory didnt play well in the first half and it came back to haunt them as they could get no closer to 5.  Ben Strong has definitely improved as has Caleb Kimbraugh.  He did a great job of breaking the press.  Right now it looks like layups are beating 3s.  We'll see if we can reverse that against Sydney this weekend.
