Ton Ton has had back-to-back bumpy seasons. He was a very good player when he wasn't the focus of the defense, as he wasn't in Virginia Wesleyan's national championship season. He hit a couple of big shots in the Elite 8 and Championship games.

But since he became the main outside threat last season and then main scoring threat this season, it doesn't seem like he has been able to raise his game to compensate.

Lots of expectations after that championship season have not materlized.

No one was coming in asking TonTon to average 28 ppg or anything like that. With the loss of Adair, VWC knew that everyone was going to have to step up... and so far they have. At least 4 players are averaging double figures for the Marlins.

I don't know what those expectations could have been then.  Balenga is averaging (rounded numbers): 16 ppg, 3 rpg, 2 apg, 1.5 steals, 42% FG, 39% 3P, and 81% FT.  I don't really see how that's a bad year, or not meeting expectations.

The strength of his game has always been his outside shot (which I would argue that he has been the main outside threat since he came to VWC - even as a freshman).  He has a solid chance to leave VWC as it's second all-time leading scorer, he's already the leading 3 point shooter in school history, he's been the primary wing scorer on teams that have posted 24, 30, and 28 win seasons, and oh yeah, he did hit a bunch of huge, clutch shots during the 2006 championship run.  I don't see how he hasn't lived up to expecations.  All in all, "bumpy seasons" or not, I'll take a kid like Balenga on my team any day of the week.

BC Fans,

Is there a local Harrisonburg affiliate that carries BC games.  I am going to be traveling through the valley tomorrow and was wondering if there was anyway I could listen to the HSC-BC game on a BC radio station.  I think Steely had mentioned the phone and a radio in the past, but I didn't know if that was only for home games.

Talk about make it or break it for the ODAC championship!  Any sense for how many fans will be in both venues?
I can tell you that Crenshaw-at RMC-wil probably not be packed-probably 500 -600 at most-i can't go today because i have to work[i went to VWC game last saturday in Va Beach] and the Batten Center had 1200 or so last week for the game with us and GC probably won't have as many fans there as we did so probably 800-100-it's not a problem getting a ticket at either place. The only game we ever usually sell out is the HSC game at Macon,or an NCAA game.Kinda sad,but that's the way it is.....

I wish I could make it to Ashland for this one.  I think this is an important game in that we'll see if the team is capable of bouncing back after the Marlin loss.  Guilford has had some amazing things happen for them in Crenshaw as well, and I'm not one to write the Quakes out; I was very surprised (pleasantly  ;)) we beat 'em in Greensboro.

The students need to come out and stuff Crenshaw and make noise.  Lots.

rmc1982 and jacketlawyer - good to hear from both of you.  I'm also at work, but hope to be home in time to listen on the net.  Today's game at Crenshaw definitely scares me ... Guilford is certainly capable of beating good teams on the road, but they fell flat when the Jackets came to Greensboro a few weeks ago.  In fact, I've had this weekend (RMC and VWC) circled on my calendar since the start of the season!  Obviously, I want the Quakers to win both (9-2) and even a split (8-3) might be OK by tomorrow night, but 7-4 would be a disaster regarding winning the ODAC!  All I can do is sit back and wait to see what happens!  :)  Go Quakers!  Peace

PS  Interesting note - in the four games Guilford's lost this season, the scores were 71-66, 64-62, 69-60 and 68-56.  I guess the message there is to control the pace.

OI!!  I forgot.  End of Jan-Term!  Well, hopefully some of the locals will make it.  Dang, now I feel worse than ever for not being able to make it.

Jacketlawyer-This one DEFINITELY SCARES ME!If we come out flat and don't hold Ben Strong down and they have another one or two kids hitting we could be out of this early. We cannot get into foul trouble and Carlson MUST keep his cool-he is KEY to us playing well-he played like crap last week, let the trash-talking get to him,and it took him out of his game[Actually-mike took him out of the game for the last 15 minutes because of it].As much as i don't like to say it Oldfish was right in his post last week-we get so caught up in the fact that we think we're Randy-Mac and we're the class  of this league-well....Right now we're not..........VWC,as much as we might not like their most effective tactics-are just that-EFFECTIVE-plus  they're faster and quicker than we are so we've got to do what we do best to have a chance against them-rebound and play defense and get the ball on the blocks-and until we can unseat them and GC they're the class of this league right now...and as for our usually loud and boisterous student section.....well...Jacketlawyer-it's the end of J-term[what we used to call Colloquy when we were there]and i'm not so sure the students are there now-they may be,but if they're not that #6 yellow jersey that they all wear that makes the entire student section look like a sea of yellow will not be in play today which makes it all the harder......Hope i'm wrong but i think it's j-term break this weekend and they won't be back until tomorrow.... GO JACKETS......Billy

RMC1982--I remember colloquy, or Mayterm very well, as I got to have two before they switched it to JanTerm my junior year.  Remember colloquy and Camptown quite well. ;D

Well sorta. . . 8).

Yeah, today's game is very significant.  I hope the problems reported from the VWC game have been dealt with in an appropriate manner.  I'd like to avoid the mid-season "swan song" we had last year for what appeared to me to be similar reasons seen at the Batten Center.

My first 2 Colloquy's were in january, and being in the basketball players frat{SAE}it was fun because we travelled with them alot to away games[we were div II then]and my last 2 were in may......and i had about the same large time as you :P.......I do think Mike will have them ready today-he was NOT  a very happy camper after the game at VWC-that was very plain to see,and i think it was a VERY QUIET bus trip back.I would not have wanted to be late for practice on sunday morning.......i think the 1st half will tell today-we don't always play well from behind,as was evidenced last week......and the students being off doesen't help any,either........Tune in to Marty and co at 2pm....Oh YEAH-i got an e-mail from the alumni office that DR UNGER[poli-sci] died yesterday...thought you'd like to know...GO JACKETS

VWC knocked off E&H this afternoon.  I forget the exact final but it was around 110-99.  It was the kind of game you'd expect if you envisioned these 2 teams playing.  VW dominated inside, shot fairly well outside, and played so-so against the press.  E&H went on some runs to keep it close (tied at half) and played hard.  The Marlins were clearly the better team but E&H always makes you work.  It will be interesting to see how all the running effects the Marlins in the Guilford game tomorrow.

Drew Prehmus scored 19 points today to move from 22nd to 19th place in All-Time Career Scoring at Hampden-Sydney, with a current total of 1209 career points.  Drew also had 4 assists and 2 steals, so he looks like he has recovered from the ankle injury.

Turner King had 17 points and 7 rebounds, with Troy Kaase getting 14 points.

The Tigers defeated Bridgewater by 14 points, 72-58, to avenge their 2-point loss in Bridgewater a few weeks ago.

Guilford defeated Randolph-Macon by 18 points, 69-51.

Roanoke hosts Washington and Lee this evening at 7pm.

The Generals start their 4  in a row away from home - Roanoke, Guilford , Macon & lastly the Marlins.

Hopefully they'll step up. This stretch will tell us a lot about W&L.
