checked the box for tonight's game, no Carlson. Any idea what's up with that?
he's not listed on the roster anymore,either-i think it's grades...but it may be attitude or a combination-either way he's not listed-i know Mike has not been happy w/him and the younger kids have been coming on-i still hate to lose him,though....

It was looking like it was time for Jordan Brown to take over and this only solidifies it.

Guys, Cannon Watson is one of the good guys and a terrific play-by-play commentator. A former college athlete himself, he knows the nuances of college sports and has a keen insight into the athlete. Hampden-Sydney is fortunate to have him. Although a Tiger fan, he's not a 100% "homer" and calls it like he sees it, good or bad. He doesn't throw out compliments unless warranted. Take his good words about the Quakers as sincere and well earned.

Now as for that band of color commentators he has to put up with... ;) ;D
I've never met Cannon Watson, but I've heard good things about him.  Thanks for your input as well.  I've watched the Quakers almost as much as sludge and, even though I'm a bit biased, I have to agree they're playing really well right now.  My paternal grandmother's maiden name was Watson, but I think Cannon may be the first person I've ever heard of with that first name - is it a nickname or his given name?  At any rate, what a great name for someone involved in sports!

Barron Von Cannon Watson is the full proper name if memory serves me. (He may kill me for announcing that) Cannon is certainly a one of a kind character. (in a complimentary way) I think he is a fine announcer. Yes, he does have a Tiger bias but he gives credit where credit is due. His nickname is Boomer. If not for BOOMER, a few folks might remember me as a pretty fair kicker in my own right. (Laces out....laces out!!!  :D) Cannon graduated a few years after I from high school and was a terrific kicker. (hence the name boomer) I'll never forget the first time I saw him kick. His leg earned him a scholarship to UNC. I believe he still holds the school record of a 54 yard FG at dear old Prince Edward Academy. Breaking my career best of  20 yard extra points. HEY...we scored all the time so I never got a chance to kick FG's :D :D Seriously, David Harper previously held the record for many years. David went to Florida St I believe and played briefly in the NFL but injury ended his career before it ever really took off. He was known for other positions besides kicker but he was so big he could kick the crap out of the ball. I think he is a golf pro somewhere these days.
While we are taking a stroll down memory lane....I used to cruise down to Par-Bills before baseball practice with Oscar (aka Robbie Stanley) listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd on the 8 track. He was a senior when I was a freshman in HS. He too is one of a kind (also in a good way) To this day one of the toughest pound for pound football players I have ever seen. He would flat knock the snot right out of your nose.  :o

Good thing he has high morals, or else he'd be a loose Cannon.

I didn't want to lose him either.  Somewhere, somehow an opportunity has been wasted. ???

sludge

We drove back from Hampden Sydney through a surpisingly dramatic snowstorm.

The game was good; H-SC kept it good.  Fan turnout was lower there than in some past years, though perhaps that was due to the upcoming weather.  Still a decent turnout.

The Tigers are pretty beefy; as a team, they easily outweigh the Quakers.  Kaase & co. weren't timid at all, but Strong and Sanborn are a barrel of fun for defenses to handle, and the whole Quaker team does rebound. At the game I had an impression that the Tigers out-rebounded the Quakers, but later the stats showed otherwise.

Guilford shooting wasn't so well, but overall level of play was good with continued decent defense.  In the first half, either the three point defense was sketchy, or Sydney was just red hot, I'm not sure which.  In knew Prehums and King could shoot, but who were those other guys!

Happy to have a road win.  Whenever you get off a bus and win, its great.

I don't quite get Hampden Sydney as a 5-9 ODAC team.  They played hard and they seemed better than that. I guess they're missing a bit of I-don't-know-what.  If you want to meet them in the tournament, go right ahead.  They're not my dream match-up.

tigerrat

I could not get the feed for the first half and in the second half, all I heard was "where is Medlin". I saw on the HSC website that he scored 8 points in 9 minutes. Did he roll is ankle again or is it a coaching decision?

hasanova

Good post, sludge.  Glad you and muckraker made it back to the Triangle safe and sound.  We had about 3 inches of snow in Greensboro last night - huge flakes and beautiful to look at early this morning - all the trees were covered.  I agree, the Tigers seem like they should be better than 5-9 in the ODAC ... I don't want to face them a third time either!  I believe VWC had to play the Tigers 4 times last year and the Marlins dropped the third game in Salem!

sdbrum

Hey all sdbrum is back in the house! I've been monitoring Guilford's success and I truly hope the NBA gives Ben Strong some serious consideration. Nobody here in SoCal knows about the ODAC, but give us some slack-we have the Pac-10, Mountain West, WCC, Big West and WAC to contend with all the time! Kudos to Ben for breaking the scoring record. Now, I would love to hop on a plane and fly out to catch a game, but regrettably, that isn't feasible for me.
Does anybody ever video tape the Quakers games? It would be nice if someone posted something on YouTube! Surely there must have been some great highlights lost to memory-perhaps one of you might be able to get something filmed so we all can enjoy it. That would be awesome.
Good luck to Guilford in the NCAA tourney-just remember what the late, great Jim Valvano always said about the tourney: Survive and advance! Survive and advance!
I add: Make your damn free throws!

BTW-I LOVE the fact that all the teams in the Western conference are making all these panic trades after my beloved Lakers STOLE Pau Gasol! I can hardly contain my glee!

Take it easy everybody!

Mr. Ypsi

In case anyone here hasn't noticed it, there is a thread in the 'multi-regional topics' board devoted solely to whether or not Ben Strong will make it in the NBA.  (The general opinion seems to be that getting drafted may be slightly less than a 50% shot, but that he will get a legitimate opportunity to play.)

Cannon is one of the all time greats; color commentary: semi-morons, can only offer commentary like "the '74 NC State team wasn't all that good."   Rob Stanley, aka Oscar the Grouch, is terrific; his long time coaching background enables him to provide tremendous insight.

RMC1982, perhaps you also know my colleague in coaching the youth of southside va: he was the off the depth chart backup quarterback when Stanley was playing: Wild Bill from South Hill, legend of the scout team.
you wouldn't be talking about the infamous Bill Jordan(or Bill "Jordache" as we used to call him for his impeccable wardrobe!)who was from south hill.Yes i lved with the infamous Rob Stanley-alias Oscar-alias Mel Torment, alias Ollie, alias Big Red,among other things.I played against him in my high school years at Southampton Academy, lived with him at RMC(when you got outa bed you had to watch out for those dip cups-YUCK)and to this day he's one of my best friends in the whole world. He also was, pound for pound, the meanest,nastiest,hardest-hitting SOB to EVER wear a RMC uniform-player of the year in the ODAC in 1981,he never in his college days weighed a pound over 175 but played like he weighed 250.I'm gonna be out of town this weekend for work or I'd be partying with that nasty-faced SOB  and his Kappa Sig buddies before the VWC game sat nite at ANDY'S in Ashland. If you go he and his cohorts aren't very hard to spot-they're all HUGE(all ex-Macon football players) and loud,too.....But a PILE of fun...my son ,who's 17 now -LOVES 'em!....Gonna miss those guys this weekend but we are planning a trip to the odac tournament if we make it to sunday......

rmc...Not sure if you read my previous post about Oscar or not but another interesting note about him. I mentioned David Harper....a former stud at PEA in years gone by. I always heard that one of the main reasons Oscar was so tough was David, who is quite a bit older and quite a bit bigger (like twice the size) would rough him up in neighborhood games growing up in The Greens in Farmville, VA. Next time you talk to him, you might ask him about that. Just tell him Sailor Bob sent ya. He'll know who you are talking about.  ;D
As for SA.....UHG!!! That's another issue. We were 9 and 2 my Sr year. Both losses were to the dreaded Raiders from Courtland, VA.  :o In 28 years, still haven't gotten over that.  :D

rmc1982

DonHO-I'm still looking for the reason-I'm in the jewelry biz- iown my own store-and today being Valentines Day and all...well let's just say it was a little busy today. One of my frat brothers is one of Mike's best friends and a Platinum YJC donor-I'll call him asap-i know he knows...I'm travelling tomorrow but if i can get WI-FI service in the DFW  or COS airports i'll post.I do know he's not on the roster on our website.....more later.....

rmc1982

DonHO-it's grades......my contact says he had to make some grades in j-term he didn't get, apparently.it isn't official as of yet-i think it was VERY close and it still may be worked out but that's the scuttlebutt.....

donho

rmc1982,  if it is grades I wish him well. He at least gave it a two and a half year shot. College isn't for everyone.
