I would add Stephen Fields to a "players to watch" list as well...

and Mason Wooldridge and Steven Echols (if he goes back to his form from freshman year and improves on it, which I strongly believe he will) ;)

ODACHOOPS

I was talking about "players to watch" throughout the country, not within the ODAC.  Possibly Fields, I know he is a great player, who is destine for a break-out year  but it's tough to go from what Honorable Mention All-Odac to "players to watch" throughout the country over one summer.  Wooldridge is another great player but with him being on a team that has consistently struggled in the past (not that I'm saying they will this year) I could see him getting left off that list too.  I know he was a First-Team all Odac player a year ago but just don't think he has the "national press" as say a school like hsc or rmc has. Which whether we like it or not does play a role in those type of rankings ect.

Not according to the Sporting News preview....... they didn't even have a single team from the state of Virginia in their list of possible breakthroughs, nor did they have a single player that received an Honorable Mention......

Dang, we don't ANY respect!!!! lol

No worries, DeWayneCarter...when the ODAC puts R-MC, VWC and (hopefully, fingers crossed!!) H-SC in the NCAA Tourney, the ODAC will have its day!! Let us all stay under the radar...we'll be there when it matters!

Now whether those ODAC teams count as breakthroughs, I don't know...but its hard for me to imagine that at least VWC, with its national success as of late, is not mentioned by Sporting News!

On a sad note, some of our "more experienced" posters from Virginia may know about the passing of former Hokie star William (Bill) "Skillet" Matthews, who played at Virginia Tech in the mid-fifties.  He was about 6'7" or 6'8" and earned his nickname because his hands were "as big as a frying pan."  After his playing career was over, I believe he was active as the Assistant AD at VPI as well as owning car dealerships in the area.  He was my father's first cousin, as Bill's late mother and my late paternal grandmother were sisters.  Peace

Sorry for that news Nova. I bet he was fun to be around. He must have been a giant "back in the day."

So were only a couple of days away from season and the boards are dead come on people!

Thanks.  Yes, he was (fun and a giant).  His grandfather (my great-grandfather) was 6'8" ... he was born in 1866, so he really was a giant.  I remember him ... he lived to be a very, very old man and passed away when I was about 8.

Speaking of Bill Matthews, after being an Assistant Coach for a while, he became Head Coach at VPI for a few seasons and beat Adolph Rupp and Kentucky in Lexington his very first game ... 1962, I think.  That whole side of my family was (are) big people ... we've had a starter at VPI, a 1st Team All-America at Guilford, a member of ODU's DII national championship team and a current starter at Brevard.  I think there are others, but those immediately come to mind.

Anyway, back to the 2008 ODAC ...

I'm with you TDizzle!  I've been checking Guilford's website a couple of times a week to see if they will ever post a 2008-09 roster!  I saw a few new (tall) guys walking through the stands at the football game last week - one was as tall as Sanborn - maybe he's the freshman from Winston-Salem.

Most schools dont post a roster until after practicec/tryouts start. Most schools have several walk-ons trying out for a limited number of roster spots...

Guilford's schedule has been amended to add a Nov. 14 exhibition game at 2008 Elite 8 participant Davidson.  I'm not sure about the rules on this, but it evidently counts as the regular season opener for the Wildcats.

Man, I wish Strong, Belkoski and Kimbrough were in on this trip, but good luck Quakers!

What's the over/under on how many points Stephen Curry scores?  :)

I'd say that primarily depends on the degree of mercy the Davidson coach has. :D

With no disrespect to Guilford, after what we saw in the d1 tourney last year I'm sure Curry could get 80 if it were needed.

There is an article on www.dnronline.com about how if this group of sophomores stick around for EMU, they "might finally shed mediocrity".  Funny, I thought a person or group had to be mediocre to be able to shed that label.  They need to worry about becoming mediocre first.
