This is a none bball question and a d3hoops.com question.

Why does the number of post not change? I and some others have been stuck on the same number for some time.

Tigerfan

I accept that Bob Johnson has a tremendous desire to win, but he has implemented a method which, on first viewing, is ill-suited to doing so.  It appears to be a new version of "40 minutes of hell" which is more accurately "40 minutes of bad shots."  If, in my golf game, I was faced with a series of 235 yard carries over water to an island green, I could possibly make some of them.  More than likely, I add a bunch of strokes to my score.  That's what E&H is doing.  When they are trading a bunch of layups for a bunch of much higher difficulty shots they are not playing very good odds.  The "defense" is merely attempting to steal at all times irregardless of the opposition's ability to avoid your futile attempts.  Decent ballhandling and the ability to keep a man in front of you and contest his shot appear to be all that is required to defeat a team playing this style.
What was most disappointing to me was that I thought watching that type of game would at least be somewhat entertaining and fun.   Unfortunately it was a rather dull game.  There was no variation in the game, no X's and O's from the Wasps.  There was only X or maybe just \.  Maybe there is a more advanced version of this style of game, but I don't care to see any more.

I didn't see the GC at E&H game, but I listened on the internet broadcast.  It is a very telling statistic that E&H attempted an NCAA record 97 three-pointers (made 30) and Guilford attempted only two (made zero), but the Quakers still won by eleven (147-136).  Guilford has good ball-handlers and shooters who are fundamentally sound in the paint (53 of 80 for the game).  Guilford also set school records for points (old record was 125) and made 41 free throws (old record was 40) after 100 years of basketball.  I'll probably go to the January return match-up in Greensboro, but I, like tigerfan, don't see this as a sound basketball strategy.  With no disrespect meant to Coach Johnson and his players, I feel this style of play tarnishes the game and makes a mockery of long-standing records.  I, for one, would rather see a well-played 80-79 game with conventional strategy.  Bob Johnson certainly has more coaching savvy than I and I have no doubt he is playing to win within the rules, but I just don't think this is the way to go.

Mr. Ypsi

For those who have not discovered it, there is a thread on the General Basketball board called "Who is running the Grinnell system" which discusses the good and bad of that style of bball.

E&H is doing at least a variant of 'system' ball.

jacketlawyer,
The lack of success by the W&L men's basketball team is the exception rather than the rule when evaluating the competitiveness of the Generals in men's sports.  Last year W&L finished on top of the men's portion of the ODAC Commissioner's Cup, marking them as the best overall men's athletic program--just edging out Roanoke.   This year they topped the men's (and women's) cross country competition.  As in most years, they were very competitive in men's soccer this fall.  Football was up this fall.  The Generals' golf team is usually close to the top.  Tennis dominance and lacrosse excellence have been mentioned earlier.  The track and field teams (indoor and outdoor) are competitive at the second tier (behind perennial leader Lynchburg).  The commitment of the administration to fielding top men's athletic teams is there.  What needs analysis is the lack of success in the men's basketball program.  That has been discussed on the board at some length in past years, but we could do it again if you want.

Pat,

I think I get it.  Not only does your number change, but it goes back and changes all of your past posts to the current number.  Is this correct?  I don't see the point.

Great website though!

steely - If the records are correct, shouldn't mr_ divac be at 17 and Scottie at 7?  Maybe the abacus needs some oil.  :)

i got two bonus points for being the one closet to picking the total points of the E&H vs. guilford game (i think that was the game) i was only off by 8 points!
