Does that mean that UTD is the #1 seed, playing in the second game?
I believe the host gets to pick whether they play at 6:00 or 8:00.

The host doesn't get to pick in the sectionals. The host plays second. Hasanova's schedule is incorrect.

Sorry.  I've corrected my post ... I got my information from an earlier post by algernon.  I guess we both assumed JCU was following the route taken by Centre versus Averett.   GC and JCU, indeed, play the 2nd game following UT-D/Capital.

It's official:  JCU is hosting the Sectional in University Heights, OH (Cleveland).  GC/JCU at 6 pm on March 13 and Capital (from Columbus)/UT-D in the second game.  It's about an 8-hour bus ride from Greensboro (work your way west to I-77, then head north).  Do you think the Quakers will try to make that trip leaving Friday morning or would you go up on Thursday ... I think I'd go on the 12th!

I am sure they would go Thursday. They have practice time at John Carroll on Thursday.
Thanks.  That makes sense.

Actually, my mistake in figuring the sectional game times was due to my faulty memory with regards to the 2003 sectional at Randolph-Macon .... I was incorrectly thinking that UW-Oshkosh defeated Randolph-Macon in the first game, followed by Hampden-Sydney's win over Illinois Wesleyan in the second, so -- based on that -- I figured that the host team in a sectional plays the first game.  My memory was wrong, as it too often is, as the Tigers played the first game in that sectional and the hosting Yellow Jackets played the 8pm game.  I'm sorry about that.

No problem.  I actually wanted the 6 pm game ... but the Quakers (and their fans) will be ready at 8!

Sanborn is definitely the key. I've said it all year, Guilford has the luxury that most D-III teams do not: a 6-10 space eater that is by no means a stiff in the paint. That luxury alone will get you 5 or 6 more wins every year at the D-III level, and will also give you an advantage in a game such as this, where John Carroll does not have anyone to match up.

Both teams have quick, athletic guards and tough, rugged forwards. However, Guilford has the wild card down low and unless John Carroll can get Sanborn in foul trouble by throwing waves at him, Guilford will win this one by 8-10 points.

Guilford fans will be impressed with JCU, however. I really enjoyed watching them play in Fleet earlier this year. At that time, they played two groups of five, electing to go with the "hotter" five down the stretch. In their first game here, it was their starting group. Against the Tigers, it was their second unit that pulled away in the final 5 or 6 minutes. It was hard to distinguish between the two groups because they are so close in skill level!

Yeah, as I posted earlier, JCU seems to have a dozen players with significant playing time and stats ... that indicates their coach has confidence in all of them and sees them as interchangeable.  Guilford has about ten who get playing time, but sometimes the box will only show 5 or 6 players who score.  You don't have to score to contribute, of course, but it does put more pressure on the defense.  The thing I'm worried about is JCU's home fans, but, to Guilford's credit, they seem to thrive on that and have done really well in front of some large and loud opposing crowds this season!

For those who don't know, JCU has used a "platoon" system for awhile now.  The coaching staff puts together two groups of players based on chemistry and on court strengths, not really an A team and a B team as much as two interchangeable units.

They'll rotate in and out based as often as every five possessions or so if needed.  They use an up tempo, high pressure style and force a lot of turnovers.

Guilford will definitely have a size advantage in the paint, and how Sanborn plays will probably say a lot about how the game goes.  It'll be interesting to see how JCU plans to defend him.

I'm sure you already know this, but JCU hasn't lost at home this season, and has never lost a home playoff game.   ;)

Does anyone have any info on Capital?

Pat Coleman

We'll have a feature story on them in the next 24 hours or so.

Also, I know I'm not the only one who has checked out the lower left hand bracket. Whoever comes out of that bracket will be battle tested, to say the least.

Congrats to Guilford!!!

So has anyone elso thought about the possibility of a Palumbo vs. Butterfield match-up in the elite 8?  For those that dont know, Terry Butterfield (now the UTD coach) was the mens coach at VWC when Palumbo coached the VWC women.

Despite what either one of those guys might say...That loss would be tough to take.

Congratulations to VWC for a fine season as well !

Yes, I thought about it.  Palombo and Butterfield's connection was probably why Guilford made the trip in December to play UT-Tyler and UT-Dallas on UT-D's home floor.  Trust me, when you get to this level, you want to win.  They'll shake hands before and after the game, but both want to advance!

Sounds a lot like what Guilford has seen from Emory & Henry for years in the ODAC.  I think Guilford's starters (except perhaps Stanley) will see about 28-35 minutes each.  Hopefully, Martin Stephenson's feeling better and is ready to go ... but kudos to T. C. Anderson for playing a key reserve role in the win over Averett.  Yep, I think most Guilford supporters are keenly aware of JCU's 21-game win streak and their success both at home and in the NCAA's.  I'm sure the Quakers will give you their best shot!

Pat Coleman

Only on defense, though, not on offense. JCU isn't chucking threes and giving up quick layups to get the ball back.
