Nice wins for RMC and HSC tonight.  I expected the Jackets to top the Royals, but I wasn't sure which way the game would go between the Tigers and the Marlins.  It's still early, but several tiers are starting to develop in the standings.

DenbowsRoomie

The Roomie is fresh off from working the scorer's table in the Hoyas' convincing win over 'Cuse tonight -- I highly recommend you catch Sportscenter to check out DaJuan Summers' ridiculous break-away slam in the first half...he just brutally posterized one of the Orange bench players.

Thankfully, I returned home to find out that W&L eeked out a win against those pesky Hornets.  Its good to know Kirk Jones is rounding into form -- he was conspicuously silent in the first chunk of W&L's season -- why, I'm not sure (injury?  I'm not close enough to Lex anymore to get that inside intel).

With Jones on the wing, Goodman/McHugh at the point and the General's balanced frontcourt (White, Goetsch, Heller and Ryan Owens have all contributed with solid points/boards throughout the season...any given night a different guy steps up), I really like what the Generals have been able to do so far.

And lets face it -- to any longtime Gennies fan, a 10-4 start is manna from the heavens, no matter how pretty the games have been.  Here's hoping Hutch and the boys can keep tallying up those W's.

In Roomie news, I'll be making my first (but hopefully not ONLY) ODAC basketball appearance this weekend, as I'm planning to catch the W&L/RC game at Bast.  The way the Maroons are playing, W&L will have their work cut out for them.  But W&L got a huge monkey off their backs last year with their first win in Bast in 5,739 years, so there's no reason not to create a winning streak in Salem.

Lets Go Gennies.

- PS -- is there a charge to see games in Bast?

Matt Drewer has 17 charges taken this season for bridgewater.  That has to be among the leaders in all of division 3 basketball.

There is a modest charge, but I might be able to get you in.  Meet me at the desk inside the downstairs entrance (in front of the fitness center door) a half hour before the game.

P.S.  You might have to agree to help the ball girl collect loose basketballs, play in the pep band, or sing the national anthem.  I know they were looking for a volunteer to get his chest painted to help spell out ROANOKE---they only had enough to spell out 'NOKE at the Bridgewater game.  I know you'd fit right in.   :)

Nova,

If I plan to come to the GC-HSC game on Monday, would I need to be concerned about seating?  I don't really want to drive 2.5 hours to be turned away at the door.  Thanks for any advice!

Tigers score a huge win in Fleet over a new-look VWC squad...the difference between 1-4 and 2-3 in the ODAC at this point in the season is big, as is winning games on your home floor. From about the 15 minute mark on in the second half, the Tigers really controlled the game, and held at least an 8 point lead for the duration.

This is what Tiger fans expected from this team, which is becoming more and more dangerous with each outing. Even in the R-MC game, you could see the confidence level rising for this team, and with freshman Ben Jessee stepping up and becoming a consistent scorer (double figures in his last five games), Turner King is getting some much needed help. Having two guards scoring is also opening things up for Lane Medlin inside...he has scored in double figures in his last two games as well.

H-SC's defense was incredible, holding the Marlins to under 40 percent shooting and holding Norman Hassell to 6 points and 1 rebound. Fields struggled to get off uncontested looks as well, going 4-of-14. If the Tigers play that type of defense and also get production from many sources (Payne 10 boards, Lawton 6 assists, Mudd 4 assists, King 22 and 10, Jessee 11 points, Medlin 14 points), H-SC will be in the top-4 of the standings by the end of the season.

But the ODAC beast (the schedule, that is) never sleeps, and H-SC has a great opportunity to get back to .500 in the conference Saturday when it hosts Bridgewater, a team that always gives the Tigers fits! Good luck to the Tigers! In the words of Jim Rome, "I am OUUUUT!"

Some big games on Saturday, and with the ODAC currently in a log jam around the midsection, some questions can begin to be answered with the outcomes on the 17th!

I like...

R-MC over E&H (Short will flourish against the full court pressure of the Wasps)

H-SC over BC (Tigers win third straight behind new found offensive balance)

GC over VWC (Marlins the unfortunate victims of a tough stretch of games)

EMU over RAND (Royals the beneficiaries of an easier stretch of games)

W&L over RC (Hey, it has to happen sometime...why not in this rivalry game? I may also invoke the d3hoops.com frontpage jinx!)

So after Saturday, with my picks, the standings would read like this:

R-MC (6-0)
Noke (6-1)
GC (5-1)
W&L (4-2)
EMU (4-3)
H-SC (3-3)
VWC (3-4)
BC (3-4)
LC (1-5)
E&H (1-6)
RAND (0-7)

Hey, Brian.  It won't be a problem - especially on a Monday night.  Ragan-Brown Field House seats about 2500 and the only Guilford athletic events in that venue I've ever seen anywhere near capacity were when the women or men's teams have hosted NCAA playoff games.  I predict the crowd will be in the 400-600 range.

Now, for any RMC fans thinking about traveling here on the 31st - that may be a sellout.  I recommend you come early.  It's a Saturday afternoon and both teams are currently contending for the ODAC title plus four uniforms will be retired that day.  Since two of the four honorees won a national title and three of the four had long NBA careers, there will be a lot of media coverage and high fan turnout.

Brian, I'll PM you with my cell number.  It would be nice to meet you.  It's park wherever you can, but I would recommend the area between McBane Field (baseball), English Hall (a dorm) and Hege-Cox (fine arts).  Armfield Stadium (football), McBane Field (baseball), Alumni Gym and Ragan-Brown Field House (basketball) are all in a row on the outside (east side) of Quadrangle Drive.

Welcome to Guilford.  It should be a great game!

I agree with jacketlawyer.  Nice to see you checking in.  So, Jim, what letter(s) are you?  :)

Hasanova,

The inimitable Mrs. Loesel has declared that I can bare my painted chest in Bast when I regain my six-pack abs and hell freezes over.   :)

I can't testify to the abs, but Hell (MI) has definitely frozen over! ;)

The arctic air's headed this way for the weekend!  At least some brewed six-packs will be visible ... and cold!  :)  You know, Roanoke's got the shortest name on the men's side in the ODAC (I doubt Hollins will get involved in this!), so if the Maroons can't find enough folks what are the rest of us supposed to think?  Other questions:  Are there 16 Mennonites east of the Mississippi who would actually agree to have their chests painted?   Is it cool or simply a bummer to be an ampersand or a hyphen at all the ODAC schools that need one?  Peace

You know, Hasanova, I never looked at it quite that way before.  ;00)

Guilford plays next at VWC, but I think we hook the fish this year even in the tank.

Gennies, nice story, you bet.

Ypsi, I think I once went to Hell and Nirvana in the same day up there in MI.  There was a nice little general store in Nirvana back then.

Players averaging a double-double so far this year:
1. Tyler Tyler Sanborn Sanborn
2.
That's the list.
He's easy to deal with, though.  Just move him out of the post.   :P
