Thanks, HSCfan, hasanova, and sludge.

I didn't know that the ODAC has determined that each team has 2 rivals that they will play every year.  I have to wonder whether HSC, RMC and VWC are a triad ... that the rivals for HSC are RMC and VWC, that the rivals for RMC are HSC and VWC, and that the rivals for VWC are HSC and RMC.  If that is actually true, then I'd bet that Guilford's 2 rivals are Emory & Henry and Roanoke.  What do you think?

That's great analysis, Algernon, worthy of a hasanova.  I wonder what your profession is.
Thank you, sludge, but it was an analysis worthy of, well, algernon!  Mr. Sydney himself would be proud!

E&H and Roanoke are the pair that certainly occurred to me.  Given Guilford's all-time 13-38 record versus the Maroons, however, I almost hope you're wrong!  lol  With eleven teams, it's not possible to form all triumvirates such as RMC/HSC/VWC, although that one makes perfect sense ... and I suspect you're right.   Another case for a 12-team league!  If, for example, Shenandoah, were an ODAC team, here are the troikas I'd suggest based on geography and historical rivalries:

HSC/RMC/VWC (RMC & HSC are obvious, they're the three easternmost schools)
BC/EMU/SU (BC & EMU are obvious plus I-81 is a short trip to SU)
E&H/RoC/W&L (I-81)
GC/LC/RaC (LC and RaC are in the same town, US Hwy 29 connects all three)

RIVALS?

I think, through a process of elimination, I've figured out the rivals for each team.  If so, then it appears that the ODAC has defined the rivals on the basis of 3 geographically-determined pods of 3-5 teams each:

HSC:  VWC and RMC
RMC:  HSC and VWC
VWC:  RMC and HSC

W&L:  BC and EMU
EMU:  W&L and BC
BC:  EMU and W&L

Lynchburg:  Randolph and Roanoke
Roanoke:  Lynchburg and E&H
E&H: Roanoke and Guilford
Guilford:  E&H and Randolph
Randolph:  Guilford and Lynchburg

algenon, I think you're exactly right.  You were giving +1's for schedules, so I think it's appropriate I give you a +1 for karma.  :)

Thanks, hasanova.  Who do you think the Quakers actually think of as their biggest rivals?

Prognostications for today:

Hampden-Sydney hosts and defeats Bridgewater
Eastern Mennonite hosts and defeats Randolph
Roanoke hosts and defeats Washington and Lee

Guilford goes to VWC and wins -- too much height for the Marlins
Randolph-Macon goes to Emory & Henry and again shows why they should be Top 25.

R-MC  34
E & H  32
1st half.

Live stats site isn't working for the 2nd half.  Both teams had significant turnovers (10) and below 50% shooting in the 1st half so it looks like anybody's game.

GO JACKETS!!!!

Yellow Jackets by 18 over Emory and Henry, final. I believe 93 to 75.

H-SC 79 Bridgewater 65  and King was under 10 points but very supportive of others players today  - many others came forth for very balanced attack.

Tigers are "jelling"!!!

The Quakers get a big ODAC road win today at Virginia Wesleyan, 66-59.  After years of frustration versus the Marlins, GC's now swept this year's games and has won five in a row in the series.

After seven first half points, Clay Henson got hot in the second half and finished with 26.  Sanborn had another double-double with 17/12 and Bonner had a great game with 12/7.  The Marlins were led by Dixon 18, Fields 12 and Simmons 10.  Keys to the game were Henson's hot hand, McDuffie's foul trouble and, consequently, the Quakers outrebounding the Marlins by +14.

Guilford improves to 12-3, 5-1 and Virginia Wesleyan falls to 9-7, 3-4.  I'm looking forward to the Hampden-SYdney game in Greensboro on Monday night.  Go Quakers!

Hmmm ... in men's basketball:

Geography and long-time series:  Greensboro (USA South)
Bitterness of losses and sweetness of wins:  Virginia Wesleyan
Closeness of many games with both sides winning their share:  Hampden-Sydney
Team I'm tired of losing to:  Roanoke
Forever linked by miracle finish:  Randolph-Macon

Actually  'nova two players that were positive factors Neville andStephenson, had what I think were nice floor games. Maybe they did not put up alot of points but they both had impact on the outcome. I liked the way they played as a team.

The Tigers have been looking very good and are coming together as a strong team under Dee Vick.  It seems to have taken half a season for them to work together as a team under a new coach .... but they are definitely looking much better than they were in December.  King is the star of the team, but the Tigers are getting very solid play from Jessee, Payne, Medlin, O'Neill, Lawton, Mudd, Trops, and Partsch -- each making a real contribution as part of a team effort.  They've been exciting to watch.  (And it's nice to know that all but 1 of the players I've mentioned should be back next year.)

At this point, my sense is that Randolph-Macon is the #1 team in the conference, with Guilford, Roanoke, and Hampden-Sydney in the second tier.  Virginia Wesleyan is way down from last year ... and I would put them a step lower -- with Washington & Lee -- in the top half of the ODAC, followed by E&H, EMU, and Bridgewater at #7, #8, and #9 (no particular order) and, finally, the new kid on the block (Randolph) and the most hopeless team of all time (no name needed here).

The Tigers' game in Guilford on Monday will be a real test .... It will be tough to go on the road and win in Greensboro, but I think the Tigers could pull it off if they continue to click as they have been doing the past 3 games.

HSCfan

If the Tigers hope to go down to Greensboro and come back with a win, they found the formula necessary to accomplish that feat today.

King only scored 8 (only played 9 minutes in the second half) and took just 6 shots, but Ben Jessee (17), Matt Partsch (14), Shane Payne (10), and Karlis Trops (10) stepped up and played with confidence. Players did not sit back and wait for Turner to do something (as was the case early in the year), but rather took it upon themselves to make something happen and forced Bridgewater to guard everyone.

Even Byron Lawton has begun to resemble the guy who had 122 assists last season, he's had 10 assists total in the past two games.

The Tiger team that we have seen the last 2+ games seems to be the one that Dee Vick was hoping to develop. They are playing together, have amped up the defense (two straight games of under-40% field goal defense), and appear to be believing in the system and understanding their roles.

Guilford poses a "big" problem, literally, with the 6-10 Sanborn. He doesn't have to score to affect a game, and can rebound the Quakers to a win, giving Henson a second chance at the rim with offensive boards. If H-SC wins Monday, it will be because they a) demonstrate the offensive balance of the past two games and b) keep Sanborn off the glass!! I believe they can match up with Henson, I just want to make sure that Henson gets one look at the bucket per trip.
