Thanks for thar viewing tip for the Sat. game in Greensboro... and good luck to the Quakers for a great game tonight.

We're hoping that the Jackets made it out of fog-bound Richmond today and are ready to play well for a win.   Good luck to all the players (on both teams) and here's hoping ours come safely back tonight without any additional weather events.

GO JACKETS!!!!!!
You're welcome.  Congratulations to the Jackets for their win over W&L.  All road games are key ... especially over a team that's improved as much as the Generals.

Well, with tonight's results, the ODAC standings are:

RMC 8-1    .889
GC 7-2      .778
RoC 7-3    .700
W&L 5-3   .625
BC  6-4     .600
VWC 6-4   .600
EMU 5-4    .556
HSC 4-6    .400
E&H 2-8    .200
LC 1-8      .111
RaC 1-9    .100

So, since RMC and GC only meet once this season, Saturday's game is for first place!  If the Jackets win, they've got a two-game edge over both GC and Roanoke (pending RC's Saturday game) .... but, if the Quakers win, both teams will be 8-2 and GC will own the lone head-to-head tie-breaker.

Man, I love college hoops ... especially when the games start to matter!

Final Guilford 77, Roanoke 72

A chippy, hard-fought game between the Maroons and the Quakers tonight in Ragan-Brown.  Both teams obviously knew what was at stake and "wanted" it badly.  In the end, Guilford managed to build enough of a lead to force Roanoke to foul.  What was an eleven point lead dwindled to just three due to some GC misses at the line and some timely threes by RC.  In the end, Guilford got the right people to the line and held on to preserve a HUGE 77-72 win.

Both teams shot poorly in the first half, with the score 26-21 GC at the break.  Both teams picked up the pace in the second, however, with each squad posting 51 points.  The FT's proved to be the difference, as Guilford hit 29 of 37.  Roanoke hit more baskets (25 to 21), more threes (10 to 6) and won the rebounding game by a narrow 44-42 margin.

After trailing early 14-8 and 16-12, the Quakers went up 20-16 and later had the ball with 30 seconds to go and a 26-18 lead.  A costly 5-second call with 7 seconds to go led to a buzzer beating basket by the Maroons which turned what could have been a 10 or 11 point halftime lead into just 5.  It's uncanny how many times GC's done that this season!

Forty-three total fouls tonight, with one player fouling out on each team.  It was a very physical game.  Sanborn and Peery both had great lines with 19/12 and 18/12, respectively.  Also in double figures for GC were Bonner 21 (a terrific 9/10 from the line), Henson 17 (he was "off") and Lowder 11 (he was "on").  Also, Sanborn was an uncharacteristic (for him) 9/10 from the line.  Super!  Walker 17 and Felix 16 were part of a three-headed monster for RC.

Either team could have won this game, but GC managed to build a lead they didn't surrender (it was tied in the 2nd).  If the game had gone on for another few minutes, it could have been different ... because several times GC traded one made FT for a Roanoke three.  I was sweating when it was 75-72 with 2.8 seconds to go!

I predicted Guilford would win this game at home after the Quakers lost at RC, 80-76.   Overall, however, the Maroons still own a lop-sided 38-14 edge in the series.  This is a team I do not want to play again in the postseason!

GC's now 14-4, 7-2 and takes over sole possession of 2nd after RC falls to 15-4, 7-3.  Big game on Saturday versus 8-1 Randolph-Macon ... I hope a lot of fans can make the trip!

I don't think anyone's mentioned it, but VWC topped LC, 69-49.  The Marlins move to 6-4 in ODAC play while the Hornets continue to struggle.  EMU had the night off.

Yeah, I think it's anybody's game ... you have to give the Jackets a slight edge on preseason expectations, some individual match-ups and overall team depth, but ... I like Guilford's chances due to a) Guilford's a good team, b) it's in Greensboro and c) the "crowd" factor.   If it's a tight game, I think the atmosphere will be absolutely electric.  To date, I think this is the ODAC game of the year!  I hope the video feed will be a good one, but I'm so glad I can go in person.  One of my sisters, also a Guilford grad, has even chosen this game for her lone 2008-09 appearance.  lol

What is going with the Tigers ?????

I listened to the Lynchburg game last week; that was so ugly it hurt my ears. I could not imagine having to sit and watch that one; but at least they won.

Next they go to W&L and played poorly again; but at least they got beat by a pretty good team.

Now, they get beat by Randolph College; I assume RC is less than good (that is as nice as I can be).

I know the b'ball season is long and most teams are up and down during the season; but to almost lose to LC at home and actually lose to RC is something I never saw coming having watched the Tigers play well against a pretty good BC team just fairly recently.

Whatever the deal is, I hope Coach Vick can get them straight and ready to pull a couple of upsets in the conference tourney.

I am still in shock from what I saw last night, as I'm sure any H-SC fan in attendance is as well, but after having a little bit of time to reflect...it still hurts!

To say that the events leading up to and occuring during the game were strange is an understatement. The write up on Hampden-Sydney's website alludes to two of the oddities that occured last night, with the Tigers' team bus getting lost on the way to Randolph and showing up 30 minutes prior to tip-off and a power outage right at the start of the second half delaying the action for about 10 minutes. It was just a strange night that produced a strange result.

The Tigers did not appear ready to play. The Tigers started all five seniors, four of which (excluding Byron Lawton) rarely see the court. Combined they average 9.7 points per game, and that's with Lawton averaging 3.4 and John Barker 3.5. H-SC scored 5 points in the first 5 minutes of the game with that lineup, turning it over twice.

After a furious rally to get within four at halftime, the Tigers started the second half with that same lineup, which scored no points in 2:30 and gave up an open three. That is a tough way to start each half, but those guys are college basketball players and should be expected to contribute when called upon just like everyone else. It was great seeing them get an opportunity to play together, and I wish they could have had more success last night.

Give credit to Randolph, however. They have played a few teams tight this year and they won the only way they could have won, by shortening the game and packing it in, forcing H-SC to make shots, which they didn't, shooting 28 percent and 16 percent from three.

While I have fully come to grips with the fact that the Tigers aren't a powerhouse this year, I know that they aren't as bad as last night. This is still the same team that beat VWC by 13 and beat Bridgewater by 14, played Maryville to within a point and North Carolina Wesleyan within 2. Whereas the Tigers looked super confident for a stretch a couple of weeks ago, that confidence seems to be wavering right now. I just hope that they realize that what has happened has happened and that cannot be changed. The only thing they can do is work as hard as possible to try and get a win at EMU Saturday.

Regarding the 57-49 HSC loss at Randolph, I'll have to admit I didn't see that coming.  Randolph was going to win their first ODAC game sooner or later, but I'd reasoned it would come against another team - maybe Lynchburg.  Congratulations to the Wildcats, however.  They've shown a competitive spark several times this season, so I'm sure it was a happy locker room after the game.

Speaking of the Tiger misfortunes, though, I didn't know about the bus missing the exit, the power outage and the truly odd HSC starting line-up until I read the recap and scanned the boxscore.  The first two are tough breaks, but the third must be a message sent by Coach Vick to his customary starters.  Anyone have insight?

With a line such as King's last night, Turner's not helping himself for POY consideration.  Granted, he was 8-8 from the line, but only 1-11 from the floor for 10 points.  Historically, unless a player just really excels game after game, the POY is going to come from a first-tier team.  Right now, without a significant shift, the Tigers look destined to be somewhere between 6-8 in the standings.

I know nothing about the staring line up, but I would recommend they not do it again !!!!!

As far as King garnering POY; not going to happen. He may be the best but last night shot his chances in the ass. POY is going to come from a contending program (RMC-Guilford-Roanoke-VWC) is my guess as well it should.

Hopefully the Tigers have hit the bottom and will be on the way up from here out; time will tell.
