Absolutely baselinejam. It should have been a scrimmage, for heaven's sake.

Why would a team like EMU embarrass itself by beating another team by 67 points? What's the point? There was this high school team in Texas that beat another team 100 to 0. Their coach was fired! Talk about building some fluff into your schedule. Ridiculous!

Since I didn't see or listen to the game; its hard to judge. No one played more thqan 20 minutes.  WBC had a huge # of TO's & EMU had 31 A's vs 9 TO's. EMU shot lights out & WBS was horrible. It is difficult to blame 2nd & 3rd team kids enjoying an opportunity to score. However, the most important question(at least to me) is why would an AD schedule this game?

I agree completely that whenever any player is in the game, they've got to go all out.  It seems likely that EMU's bench would clobber that opposition.

When I saw the score of the EMU game vs. Washington Bible and the
responses on this site...I used my connections and went straight to the
horse's mouth and got Coach Dean on the phone today (I didn't tell him
that he was getting killed on an ODAC chat site).  I first asked him why
they scheduled Washington Bible and he told me that originally there was a
guarantee game scheduled with a low division 1 school.  Unfortunately, the
D1 backed out before a contract was signed so EMU was scrambling late to
fill the opening in their schedule. I also ask about the game itself and
he said that they did everything possible to control the margin in that
game.  At halftime Coach Dean actually asked the Washington Bible coach what
he could do to make things better and it was requested that EMU play zone
in the second half.  So, EMU played zone basically the entire half and ran
the shot clock down inside 15 before shooting unless they had a layup.
Coach Dean told me that he figured if they started turning down lay-ups
that would actually be 'more' insulting.  Coach Dean told me that he felt
really bad but did what he could to lesson the margin of victory. He had
several of his rarely used kids in the game in the second half and didn't
feel it was fair to ask them not to play hard? After the game he spent 15
minutes in the Washington Bible locker room just talking basketball and
school with the Washington Bible players...he said they were a great bunch
of kids and regardless of their basketball futures they were going to do
great things with their lives.  So,  I hope this clears this up...when I
saw the score and read your guys comments I knew based on my experience in
the EMU program that there was another side to this story.

+1!  Thanks for the report!

Hey stillfamily,

I can understand the scheduling of a Washington Bible. Hampden-Sydney had two teams pull out of contracts this season, and as a result, had to schedule Lancaster and Maryland Bible in the fall! Nothing like having a gaping hole or two in a schedule leaving you short of games and needing a quick fix! Certainly not EMU's fault, just how it had to be!

Kirby Dean is a great coach and an even better person. I have no doubt that he and his team played that game with the utmost integrity.

HSCfan- thanks for the comments!! Kirby is a wonderful person and an awesome Coach. I know he wouldn't run that type of score up on purpose!   He tries to do everything the right way and sets that example for his kids to follow. A game like that doesn't benefit EMU at all when it comes to competing in the best D3 league in the nation, and preparing for the ODAC tournament!
Good luck this weekend HSCfan, should be a great game.

Good morning, everyone!   I attended the W&L at Guilford women's game last night to help honor my friend, Elizabeth Parker Haskins '76, and Laura Haynes Spainhour '98.  I didn't see Laura play, put I understand she's still 10th in the NCAA DIII in career points.  With 42 in a game, Elizabeth held Guilford's single game scoring record until 2005.  She once scored 25 at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium ... in the first half! ... and the game's first 18 points in the second half versus Salem.  A great student, too, graduating with honors from Guilford, earning a Master's at Duke and now preparing her doctoral dissertation at DePaul.

Many folks I saw yesterday will also be at the RMC game today.  My sister's in town and we'll be attending a post-game reception, but I'll provide a report soon afterward.  It'll be a great day no matter what, but I'll be doubly pleased if the Quakers pull out a win ... say a game-winning buzzer-beating three in the 2nd OT!  :)

I watched a similar game at Guilford about 7-8 years ago ... before Coach Palombo arrived ... against Roanoke (NC) Bible College.  It was painful to watch from the perspective of both teams.  Guilford was in its "we're-a-.500-middle-of-the-road-ODAC-team" era,  but the Quakers still won by 76 (108-32) despite their best efforts to keep it down.  If the starters had aggressively played the entire game, I think it could have been something more like 170-20.  I don't know why RBC was scheduled, but, personally, I hope they're not a future opponent ... it really is a lose/lose for both teams.
