Good game today by the Jackets. But , can they do it on wed. away from home, against a good team who will be waiting for them. I hope so! Lets see if they can live up to pre-season hype! I know the coach's will do everything to get them ready.

Don't understand how you can say that EMU overachieved. We hear on this board most of the year how good they can be and what a fine job by Coach Dean. Now you think he could get COY cause they overachieved.

A very exciting day in Crenshaw... no box score available yet, but Asst. Coach Whitcomb said that Justin Short had 20 pts.  Danny Jones had a really big day, too, with perhaps 17 pts.  And, as mentioned already the defense was SOLID today.  Must shore up the FT shooting to really put opponents away.

The Jackets usually play tough in Farmville... so we're picking them to be more than ready for the always challenging game against the Tigers.

Congrats to all the winners around the ODAC today.

GO JACKETS!!!!

DonHo,

What the heck are you talking about?  Each year EMU is picked to finish in the bottom 2 or 3 in the league.  It doesn't really matter what the fans think, but what the coaches feel when they vote for preseason awards and then post season.

It seems like EMU couldn't shoot the ball in the ocean this evening.  26% for the game and 13% from 3's.  Looks like they were lucky to be as close as they were at the half.

Okay, this season the Royals are 14-9, 8-6 after six years of:

2007-08   9-17, 5-13
2006-07   7-17, 3-15
2005-06   11-15, 6-12
2004-05   12-13, 8-10
2003-04   6-19, 4-14
2002-03   3-22, 1-17

EMU was picked to finish 8th in the preseason poll and are currently 5th with two games to go.  I believe "overachieved" was an innocuous, but accurate choice.  Given these facts, what word would you prefer?

Mr. Ypsi

Unless ODAC is different than CCIW in this regard, the key is COACH's expectations (posters are irrelevant) - they vote the pre-season poll; they vote the post-season awards.

I'd guess the COY is (at least 95% of the time) either the conference winner or the one who MOST exceeded the COACH's expectations.  Barring somehow succeeding despite an extreme rash of injuries, make that 100%. ;)

Overachieved = did more than they were capable of.

What you mean, I think, is that they beat expectations. They achieved what they were capable of, it's just that they were capable of more than most people thought.

I do (did) mean they beat expectations.  Consider this definition of "overachieve(d)" from my copy of The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language:

"To perform better or achieve more success than expected."

EMU was expected to finish 8th (by the ODAC coaches), but they're currently 5th.  If you're picked 8th, that ostensibly means you were only expected to be better than positions 9-11 which, assuming you played each twice, would be six wins.  The Royals have eight ODAC wins.  I'm respectfully sticking by my comment.

Pat Coleman

It still has a backhanded-compliment connotation in sports. That's probably causing the consternation here.

Pat, with due respect, I'll stick up for hasanova here.

Assuming that ODAC coaches vote the pre-season poll and also vote the COY, if a team finishes considerably better than 'expected', then they also 'overachieved' in the minds of the relevant voters.  I believe you are making a distinction which may be true in the abstract, but does not exist in reality.

I am not saying Don Burgess should get the award but he should be on the short list.
BC was picked to finish 6th and the Eagles are currently tied for 3rd, though Roanoke holds the tiebreaker.
They have a win over #24 Guilford and are 2-1 without Oblitey.
Let's see what happens down the stretch vs EMU and at Lynchburg.
Going 11-5 in the ODAC would certainly be an accomplishment for BC.
