I'm betting pretty heavily that the sectional will be at John Carroll University next weekend.

For those of you who are interested, the drive to John Carroll University (near Cleveland -- the trip would be Interstate 77 almost all of the way) should be 483 miles and take 7 hours and 57 minutes, according to Google Maps.

The NCAA will only need to fly in UT - Dallas and the schedule on Friday evening will be:
     6pm:  Guilford vs. John Carroll
8pm:  UT - Dallas vs. Capital

Both of the Ohio Athletic Conference teams should have a huge turnout on Friday evening.  Hopefully, Guilford will take a bus.  Are Guilford students on campus next weekend, or is it the Quakers' Spring Break?

Or Capital, 390+ miles from Guilford to Columbus.

Does UTD have a say in this?  :-\

I'm guessing that John Carroll would get to host the sectional over Capital, since they finished as the conference champ and were ranked #1 team in the Great Lakes region.  (Capital was ranked #2.)

I assume the NCAA wouldn't want to fly 3 teams to Dallas.

I'm thinking that Guilford won't get the sectional, since they were ranked #3 in the South, a lower regional ranking than any of the other 3 teams.  Maybe I'm wrong .... Do you think there's any possibility the Quakers might host, Ralph?

Nice work, algernon.  +1  I think GC is on spring break this week.  The students will be back on the 9th.

How far will GC make it???? Will they be able to beat whatever team comes out of the bracket of death (lower left hand bracket)????

Of the teams in GC's sectional (John Carroll, Capital and UT-Dallas), Guilford's already played the UT-D Comets in Dallas back in December.  The Quakers were leading late in the 2nd half before going cold and losing, 64-48.  The Quakers and the JCU Blue Streaks have a common opponent in Hampden-Sydney ... JCU defeated the Tigers 78-67 on December 30 and GC took both ODAC meetings with HSC.  I can't see any common opponents for the Capital Crusaders.

Go Quakers!

John Carroll looks to be a very deep team ... about a dozen players with 10-24 minutes per game and 10 players at 5-15 ppg.

Their starters are:

#44 Rudy Kirbus F 6'4" JR 15.0 ppg/5.1 rpg
#21 Maurice Haynes F 6'4" SO 12.5 ppg/5.4 rpg
#11 Chris Kajac G 6'0" JR 8.6 ppg/2.0 rpg
#20 Brian Dandrea G 6'1" JR 6.6 ppg/1.6 rpg
#23 Tyler Kirsch G 6'2" JR 5.2 ppg/3.9 rpg

Key reserves:

#50 Matt Crozier F/C 6'7" FR 8.6 ppg/5.5 rpg
#15 Corey SHontz G 6'1" FR 8.0 ppg/1.7 rpg
#14 Joey Meyer G 5'11" FR 6.5 ppg/1.7 rpg

The Blue Streaks have won an impressive 21 in a row!

Looks like Sanborn could be the key.... besides the 6'7" guy it looks like they don't have anyone who can match up with him down low so they'll have to get him touches. And I wouldn't go zone against Guilford either. Henson and Bonner would light it up. I got Guilford winning this one.

I was at the HSC-JCU game and saw Guilford play twice this year.  I think this should be a very interesting game.  JCU plays very hard and they are deep.  They are also very quick and fairly athletic.  I hope that Guilford will win, but my gut says that JCU will win.  If Guilford wins this game, it will be because they beat JCU inside (i.e. outrebound them, outscore them significantly in the paint, which opens up looks for Henson et al.).  I'm pulling for Guilford and I think this will be a close one, but winning at JCU will be tough!  Good luck to the Quakers and safe travels to anyone who tries to make the trip.

It's official:  JCU is hosting the Sectional in University Heights, OH (Cleveland).  GC/JCU at 8 pm on March 13 and Capital (from Columbus)/UT-D in the first game.  It's about an 8-hour bus ride from Greensboro (work your way west to I-77, then head north).  Do you think the Quakers will try to make that trip leaving Friday morning or would you go up on Thursday ... I think I'd go on the 12th!

I agree ... and the 6'7" Crozier is a freshman.  Guilford was going inside to Sanborn versus AU ... Tyler was 8 of 10 for 19 points (despite being 3 of 7 from the line).  Meanwhile, Henson and Bonner combined for 50.

I am sure they would go Thursday. They have practice time at John Carroll on Thursday.

Does that mean that UTD is the #1 seed, playing in the second game?

I believe the host gets to pick whether they play at 6:00 or 8:00.

Then I would pick "early" so as to gain two more hours of recovery before the Finals the next night.
