Congratulations to Guilford!!!!!  The South shall rise again...and hopefully bring another National Championship home to the ODAC.   Wouldn't that be sweeeeeeeeet...........No one gave the Marlins much of a chance against Washington U or Wittenburg in 06" but the Marlins never gave up.  Play smart Guilford and remember that ANY team can be beaten on any given night.  I wish you the best of luck.  GO ODAC!!!!

Way to go Quakers and ODAC!  It's great to have southern basketball represented well.

Congratulations to Guilford.

I'm sure it didn't seem like it at the time, but I think the loss to W&L in the ODAC Tournament was a blessing in disguise.  I think it took some pressure off them.  Transylvania had won 13 of their previous 14.  Averett had won 14 of 15 and had just beaten the host team so they had to have a lot of confidence.  John Carroll was the host team and had won 21 in a row.  And UT-Dallas had won 12 of their last 14.  All those teams won their conference championship.  I don't think it would have been a huge surprise if Guilford lost to any of those teams.  Coach Palombo had the ideal "Guys, we have no pressure to win, so let's go have fun and see what happens" situation and took advantage of it.

Great play and great coaching by GC.  Best of luck in Salem.
You know, Guilford's other great NCAA playoff run ... in 2007 ... came after the 2nd-seeded Quakers were upset by the 7th-seeded BC Eagles in the 1st-round of the ODAC tournament.   With this year's 1st-round loss to 8th-seeded W&L and last year's home loss to St. Mary's (MD) in the first round of the NCAA's, I do think Guilford's players want to prove they're a great team.

Note to the Quakers:  Guilford's 1973 NAIA National Champions did not win the Carolinas Conference tournament, but they got an at-large bid to the District 26 playoffs, won that, and advanced to the 32-team championship tournament in Kansas City where they won five games in six days as an unseeded team!  Go Quakers!

I hope a lot of Guilford and ODAC fans will come to Salem next weekend.  I'm thinking Guilford will arrange some transportation options for students.  It would be great if there was a full-house with most of them rooting for the Quakers!  I'm buying my ticket!  :)

Congratulations to GC on the tremendous win!  I know you'll represent the ODAC well.  You've got one more weekend of basketball to play.  Cherish the moment and continue to give it your all!

This is strange but the DIII B-Ball championship site that the ODAC hosts shows that UT-D defeated GC in OT 64-59, but has GC playing WashU on Friday at 5:00.  I know they just listed the score wrong, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

It has been corrected now, but it said UT-D 64, GC 59 when I first looked.

Brian - all of that information is correct. What is strange about it?

I wish that UTD had defeated Guilford.

Dave, you did a great job on the broadcast!

Thanks.

Thanks,  Ralph... I appreciate the kind words. Just FYI, I have decided that if Guilford is down three with time running out at the end of a game, I should be allowed to call the game tied and heading to overtime BEFORE the shot is even put up! :)

Congrats to Guilford... I told you they were a match up problem! A solid, coordinated big man in D3 surrounded by a bunch of shooters... then a few role players who play their roles well.... thats a tough draw for anybody. Wash U betteer watch out! That should be a good game. Will there be a live feed or will it be broadcast on TV?

This is a revision of my earlier post .... I've updated the 10-year period from 1999-2008 to 2000-2009.

These are the 10 conferences Division III that have been to the Final Four more than once (National Champions in Bold):

NESCAC - 6 Final Fours - Williams, 2003; Williams, 2004; Amherst, 2004; Amherst, 2006; Amherst, 2007; Amherst, 2008

UAA - 5 Final Fours - Rochester, 2002; Rochester, 2005; Washington U, 2007; Washington U, 2008; Washington U, 2009

ODAC - 4 Final Fours - Hampden-Sydney, 2003; Virginia Wesleyan, 2006; Virginia Wesleyan, 2007; Guilford, 2009

Centennial - 3 Final Fours - Franklin and Marshall, 2000; Ursinus, 2008; Franklin and Marshall, 2009

CCIW - 3 Final Fours - Illinois Wesleyan, 2001; Carthage, 2002; Illinois Wesleyan, 2006

MIAA - 3 Final Fours - Calvin, 2000; Calvin, 2005; Hope, 2008

NCAC - 3 Final Fours - Wooster, 2003; Wittenberg, 2006; Wooster, 2007

OAC - 3 Final Fours - Ohio Northern, 2001; Otterbein, 2002; John Carroll, 2004

WIAC - 3 Final Fours - UW-Eau Claire, 2000; UW-Stevens Point, 2004; UW-Stevens Point, 2005

CAC - 2 Final Fours - Catholic, 2001; York (PA), 2005

NJAC - 2 Final Fours - William Paterson, 2001; Richard Stockton, 2009

So, all of the Final Four participants from the past 10 years have been from one of these 11 conferences except for 3 teams: Salem State, 2000; Elizabethtown, 2002; and Gustavus Adolphus, 2003.
