Congratulations to Coach Macedo on his recent honor as 2009 Virginia College Division Coach of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors. This is Dave's fourth such honor in five years. He noted in his remarks that he's very excited about the 2009/2010 Marlins and stated "our future is very bright."

Algernon - I'm picking the Marlins #1 or #2 next season ;D

Nice article about Macedo, and a well-deserved honor for him!

Thinking about the Marlins, who finished the season 17-13, I break their season down into approximate thirds ... and it went like this:

First 3rd ... before the Christmas break:  6-5
Second 3rd ... the month of January:  6-3
Third 3rd ... the months of Feb/March, including ODAC/NCAA tournaments:  5-5

The Marlins biggest accomplishment during the season was winning 4 in a row during the ODAC tournament, but it must be noted that they only had to play one of the top five seeds to win the championship.  They defeated #10 Randolph, #2 Randolph-Macon, #6 Hampden-Sydney, and #8 Washington and Lee.

Once in the NCAA tournament, playing against tournament-caliber competition, the Marlins were unable to get a win.  I'd give them creidt for winning against tournament-caliber competition earlier in the season by defeating the Yellow Jackets 2 out of 3 games.  (I include the Yellow Jackets as tournament-caliber because they only missed a Pool C berth by a hair .... but it's a fairly arbitrary inclusion to put them as among the "best of DIII.")  By adding the Marlins' other 3 losses to tournament-caliber competition during the season (2 losses to Guilford and another loss to Averett),  we can say that the Marlins had a 2-5 record against tournament-level competition in 2008-09.  Here's a comparison with other ODAC teams' performance against the "best" competition:

Guilford:  9-2 (losses to Texas-Dallas and Washington U.)
Virginia Wesleyan:  2-5
Randolph-Macon:  1-4 (0-2 against Guilford and 1-2 against VWC)

The Marlins' starting five for the last game of the season, against Widener, were Donald Vaughn (FY), Julius Carlton (SO), Terrell Dixon (SR), Quinton McDuffie (FY), and Stephen Fields (JR).  Also getting significant playing time in that game were Paul Meredith (FY) and Quantrell Simmons (SO), with Travis Meyers (FY) getting 5 minutes.  So the Marlins will bring back 7 of their top 8 players, but lose one of their top performers in Terrell Dixon, a guy who contributed 11.7 points, 3.2 assists, and 2.1 steals a game.  I can see this team competing strongly for #2, but they're going to have to get a lot better to compete successfully with the Guilford Quakers.

Would you agree, jdubyadubya?  Have you heard anything about their recruits?

Thanks, algernon ... nicely done.  My only correction would be RMC's record versus Guilford ... I think it was 0-1 since the two teams only met once.

Good analysis Algernon. What I love about the ODAC is its unpredictability. That's what makes it the ODAC :)

I'm hearing great things about your new coach. i'm certain he will enhance an already strong b'ball tradition at RMC.

Next season should be another exciting year !!!!!

tigerfanalso,  I am also hearing great things about Coach Davis. And also think it is great that Coach J.D. stayed on as well. I wish them great things. I will miss Coach Rhoades and wish him the best.

I heard that former R. E. Lee basketball star is transferring to EMU from Potomac State in WV.  If this is true, that is a great pick up.

Thanks TFA!  I'm excited as well.  I think it was a great choice on the school's part.

But every coach has to have a "shakedown cruise," so to speak.  It'll be interesting to see what happens in '09-'10. 8)

I'm sure you can't forget ..... I'm still having nightmares over it !!!!!!!
Holding penalty calls off a game winning TD with 58 seconds left; still have the ball well inside FG range to tie the score BUT it is only second down ... surely the Tigers will score the TD to win and to advance to the NCAA tourney .... then the QB is sacked and some guy in a very ugly black uniform runs it in for a TD in the OTHER endzone !!!!!

All of that sound familar ?????

Yep.  Waited eight (8) years for that. 8)

Any news on the recruiting front for ODAC schools?  I'm hearing some pretty good reports out of Guilford, but I'll leave it to the coaching staff to announce names and numbers when they see fit.  It sounds as though the Quakers have added some great talent to complement the returning players, which include probable starters Sanborn, Bonner and Henson, all seniors.

HSC has two 6'11" guys that can play; plus a 6'8" 245lb power forward. I'll let the coaching staff provide details !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Obviously just kidding; I've not heard a thing relative to b'ball recruits @ HSC.

Here's what's great about DIII and ODAC: My son played for four years at VWC and had a good career there. Then he went on to spend some time with the Harlem Globetrotter organization - both a good experience and a real learning experience. Now he's working for Wells Fargo putting his education to use and playing basketball on the weekends in a very competitive league. A couple of times he's been up against Kevin Pittsnogle and has banged with him inside. DIII and ODAC is havin' fun, and Pete's still havin' a blast, something he can do for a long time. ;D

OK, tfa, you had me at 6'11" ... twice!  I hope the ODAC's really competitive this year.   If they'd just schedule GC/HSC on the weekend from time to time, I'd make the trip to Fleet.  It's just too much on a Wednesday night!
