VWC pulls out the win over Hampden-Sydney, 69-67.  This is the 3rd time that the Tigers have lost by 5 points or less to one of the Top Ten teams in the country.  The only ODAC team that's beat them by more than 5 is EMU!

Oh, well .... the Tigers are a young team and we'll see how the freshmen develop over the rest of the season!

The Guilford Quakers shot 72.7% in the first half, led 61-22 at the break and had four players in double figures as they rolled over the Wasps tonight at Emory & Henry, 99-57.  Next up: VWC Saturday at 2 pm in Ragan-Brown!

HASANOVA-  HOLY EMU IS RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    The real question is will EMU get any respect in the National Rankings, they have beaten VWC ranked 8th and RMC ranked #1. HOW HIGH WILL EMU GO?

I think this weekend's games will also have a lot to do with next Monday night's rankings.  Obviously, RMC will take a big tumble.  If they'd lost in OT, it would be one thing, but 23 points is a beating.  Guilford and VWC play each other on Saturday, so one will come out with a 2nd loss.  If it's a tight game, they'll probably just trade places if VWC wins.  If Guilford wins (and the rest of the Top 5 win), I'd expect Guilford to move up to 4th or 5th.  If VWC wins, expect them in the Top 5 or 6.  If EMU wins handily again this weekend, I think they deserve to crack the Top 10.  The pollsters (both official and unofficial) say they've been "set" on their Top 6, but have struggled to know how to place teams after that.  Well, RMC's loss will certainly shake the Top 6, but it leaves the door wide open for EMU to make a big jump!

A prediction .... barring upsets:

  • EMU (13-1) will move up to #7
  • The winner of Guilford/VWC #2 (15-1 or 14-1) will be ranked #8
  • The loser of Guilford/VWC #2 (14-2 or 13-2) will be ranked #9
  • RMC (14-1) will fall to #10

Results between these four teams to this point:
EMU by 3 over VWC
EMU by 23 over RMC
VWC by 3 over Guilford

Now thats a whupping!!

A whupping indeed!!  I could not get in to the video stream of the game, but watched the "live stats" on the web, trying to believe the Jackets could pull out of that deficit as the clock continued to tick, and the margin got bigger...looks like the turnover bug finally bit the Jackets, as they had a chance to cut into the EMU lead early in the 2nd half, but gave the ball away on several possessions and EMU took adavantage with their athletes and thumped the Jackets and never let up.  I wish I had seen the game and could provide some insight as to what happened with the Jackets, but all I can go off of is the boxscore...too many turnovers, missed free throws, and untimely fouls.

Trying to take a positive from such a beatdown is hard, but I would bet Coach Davis finds a way, be it easy or hard, for the Jackets to rebound from this loss, and hopefully find a way to better take care of the ball.  The good thing is that the target of being #1 is off their back...now they can focus on getting better, and beating the rest of the teams on their schedule.  Rankings should see RMC fall a good bit, but there is a lot of season left, and they are young, resilient kids, that will learn from their mistakes, and Coach Davis loves a challenge, and will find the way to get this team ready for the rest of the ODAC season and into the post-season.

Go Jackets!

Since Guilford's already #6, VWC's already #8 and RMC lost so badly, I respectfully disagree that the winner of the GC/VWC game will be #8.  I think the winner will be #5 (unless another member of the Top 5 loses - then several other things come into play).

And sub-.500 Oshkosh took Whitewater to OT tonite before falling.  Even 4th might be possible.

sludge

I think Randolph-Macon got bit by the road bug and a very good EMU team tonight.  It happens.
I didn't figure anybody to win that game by 23.

VWC, rest assured that nobody's looking past you.

Mr. Ypsi

This just in - St. Thomas also lost tonight!

The winner of Guilford/VaWes should be 3rd or 4th.  All four in the top ten?!

Wouldn't that be something?!  The students are back on campus, it's Saturday, it's a doubleheader and so much is on the line ... I hope Guilford has a great crowd for VWC on Saturday!  The crowd was close to 2000 for the RMC game last Jan. 30 ... I'd like to see 1500-1800 for this one and these two teams deserve it!  Ragan-Brown holds 2500, so I hope a lot of fans - from both schools - will turn out in large numbers.  Until you get into the postseason tournaments, it just doesn't get any better.  Go Quakers!
