76-74, Guilford leads, with 9 seconds to play.  HSC has the ball.  Tigers bring the ball down the court and Turner King takes a shot that gets deflected by Tyler Sanborn.  End of game.

22 points and 16 rebounds for Tyler Sanborn.  17 points for Bonner and 14 for Josh Pittman.

26 points and 7 rebounds for Turner King.  10 points and 7 rebounds for O'Neill, plus 10 points and 6 rebounds for Harrison George.

Very good win for the #1 Quakers.  And a great game for the Tigers, who can clearly play with any team in the nation, even on the other team's court.  As the season goes on, they get better and better.

Wow what a squeaker for Guilford!  Knowing Turner King, Sanborn's deflection of his shot might have been the play of the game.

Wish you could have been there, sludge!  What a great night.  Hopefully, you and muckraker can make one of the three remaining regular season home games:  EMU on 2/10, LC on 2/13 and E&H on 2/17.

Can someone from the ODAC conference please help me. Last night I was at a men's/womens double-header here in St. Louis and between games I went to the ODAC website to see what was happening in the men's games. I'm positive it showed the final score of the HSC-GC game as being 74-73 HSC. If so, that was obviously a mistake for two reasons: (1) that wasn't the final score and (2) that was never an actual score in the game as it was 71-70 GC, the 74-70 GC, then 74-72 GC, then 74-74, and finally 76-74 GC. Was there ever a typo of Hampden-Sydney 74 Guilford 73 posted on the website, then corrected? This is driving me crazy.

Jack,

The d3hoops site showed a final score of HSC 76-Guilford 74, which was backwards.  I sent an e-mail to the contact of the website, and they corrected it.  This was within two minutes after the game ended.

You're not going crazy.

Thanks. I am quite relieved. I told a couple of people (one of them being the commissioner of our conference, the SLIAC) that there would be a new d3hoops #1 next poll because Guilford had lost. Now I can regain my credibility.

Not sure how that happened, but you're right, at no time was the score ever 74-73.  Also, the score was tied several times in the 2nd half, but GC never trailed.

The Hampden-Sydney Tigers (11-10)  are only 1 game above .500, but here's a breakdown of their record:

  • Against DI opponents0-1

  • Against DII opponents: 1-0

  • Against #16 EMU:          1-1

  • Against #1 Guilford, #7 VWC, #18 RMC, & #20 St. Mary's: 0-5 (losing 4 games by 1 or 2 points, and the 5th game by 5 points)

  • Against the rest of DIII: 9-3

I was at the game last night in Harrisonburg. Pretty solid, bounce back victory for the Runnin' Royals. The game was a  margin of about 20 points for about 2/3 of the game. I imagine the game against VWC on Saturday is going to be rescheduled because of the winter storm heading into the Mid-Atlantic.

I've seen EMU play 10+ times this season and thought I would give a player to watch over the next few years. I'm not making this post because Carlton 'Boo' Payne had a break out night last evening against Lynchburg. He has good size for a freshmen and after some time in the weight room I think he could become a really solid (potentially All-ODAC performer in a couple years) player. He is averaging about 12 minutes a game but makes the most of it with a little over 5 points and 4 rebounds a game is shoots 57% from the floor! With hard work and desire, I think he is a player to keep an eye on especially when he becomes an upperclassmen.

George Johnson, Todd Phillips, DJ Hinson, and Eli Crawford deservingly receive a lot of attention, but I want to give credit to an EMU player who does a lot of the little things that don't show up in the stat sheet. Austin Twine, the lone senior on the Royals roster has really become a solid, consistent player, and has started every game for EMU this year. I think he is the best defender for the Royals and often has the job of guarding the opposing teams best player. Hope all have a safe weekend.

According to Guilford's website, Guilford's upcoming game at Washington and Lee University has been moved up from Saturday to this Friday, Feb. 5, at 7 pm due to a wintry weather forecast.  You can listen to the broadcast by following the links at www.guilford.edu

Actually, I believe the school that posted it incorrectly corrected it. I was not in a position to fix their error because I was away from a computer.

OK to this point of the season R-MC Yellow Jackets are 16-4.
They lost to VWC by 3 which = 1 loss
They lost to Guilford by 9 which = 1 loss
They lost to W+L by 8 which = 1 loss
They lost to EMU by 23 which = only 1 loss
Against the rest of the basketball teams they played they are 16-0.( Thats how they got to be ranked nationally)
And the Jackets  just like all the other teams that make it to the ODAC ballbuster in Salem are dangerous !

Thanks for posting the link, hasanova!  Interesting to see it again.  Two things really impressed me ..... 1) the way that Harrison George took the pass from Jonathan Mudd and then so quickly got it to the hoop for his dunk! .... 2) and Tyler Sanborn's defense against Turner King in the final seconds, staying right with him and getting that block on a shot that probably would have sent the game to OT.   Wow!
