Tyler Sanborn POY  absolutely not! He may get it b/c he is a senior, but he is not the Player of the Year, and not the Most Valuable Player either. The true POY is TODD PHILLIPS - EMU. Each of them had 3 Player of the Week awards. EMU was picked 4th and finished 1st. He crushed Sanborn Head to Head by vaulting his team to a 27pt win in Greensboro, not to mention Todd's E- Rating was 31 vs Sanborns 25 in that game. EMU is also 4-0 vs. Top 25 teams. GC is 2-2 in Conference Top 25. Todd stepped up and willed his team to victory in the big games. Sanborn did not. Sanborn is a great player, a fantastic player and will probably get the award b/c he is the senior with a great stat sheet, however he is not the most deserving. Period

REALLY how can you say Sanborn is not the POY or the MVP of his own team?  He is the one player that Guilford can not win with out.  My man averages around 20 and 14, and when watching the Quakers it is clear that the team works through the big post man.  Honestly after seeing every home game and a good bit of the away games for Guilford I don't see how you could NOT see Sanborn as POY.  Besides the numbers he is a clear leader and opposing coaches have to commit at least two players to guarding him in the post. Phillips and EMU had a great game down here a few weeks ago but that kind of shooting doesn't happen to much, and lets add that there was another young man who put up 21.  Phillips didn't will his team to victory the teams overall shooting did, and besides Sanborn Guilford's offense was pitiful!!!!  Not that EMU's defense was great it really wasn't even good the Quakers just didn't hit open shoots.  So basically watch a game and pay attention to the big man for Guilford and you will see that he is CLEARLY the best player in the ODAC!

D-BAT

The "ODAC" has 4 teams ranked in Top 25 for Week#12.

Very impressive!  "ODAC" is the real deal!

http://www.d3hoops.com/top25/

(4) Guilford 23-2

(7) Eastern Mennonite 21-3

(11) Virginia Wesleyan 21-4

(18) Randolph-Macon 20-5

I think regardless of how the ODAC tourney turns out all four of ranked ODAC teams should get a spot in the NCAA tourney.  As a Bluffton (College) University Alum I have some allegiance to the fellow Mennonites at EMU.  Go Mennonites! :D  As a viewer from afar and having watched Guilford in Salem last year and VWC two years prior to that, the ODAC deserves to get all four in.  Good luck to all the ODAC teams and their fans.

Sanborn is the MVP of his team no doubt. But he is not the best player in the league. He is awesome but he isn't better than Todd Phillips. TP has the best overall game in the league.

WooHoopsntrack01

Let's Go Generals!!!  Now remember how they came on strong last year, I see the same thing happening considering how well they have been playing.

As for the rest of the tourney, this is going to be exciting.  My pic...Gennies to the ODAC final 4; from there, anything can happen.

GO SCOTS! GO GENNIES!!!

I'm with you, GCfaithful.  (Tip - use the "quote" option to copy someone else and it'll be more clear what are your comments and what you're quoting from someone else.)  I was at the EMU/GC game and Todd Phillips didn't win it on his own and, conversely, Tyler Sanborn certainly didn't lose it on his own.  The Quakers had a bad game and the Royals had a great game, so c'est la vie.

I think Tyler Sanborn will be the ODAC POY this year despite an earlier observation that, among other things, Phillips hit some threes and Sanborn (sigh) didn't even attempt one - who could have seen that coming!?  lol  :)

Nothing to do with Phillips hitting 3's during the season and everything to do with his overall game. If you watched the EMU vs. GC game you would have seen a 10pt halftime lead blow up to 17 or so because TODD PHILLIPS scored 11pts straight to start the second half and the first 15 of 17pts. I would say that is vaulting/willing his team to victory.   Sanborn doesn't have an overall game. He has a post game. No outside game, no ability to drop a dime and run the break. Phillips does all of the above and more. He is not 1 deminsional like Sanborn is. Phillips willed his team to victory all season long, not just in the GC game. Phillips played awesome in every game that counted this season, every big match up and against every top 25 team.  4-0 vs top 25 and Phillips avg. 25ppg , 10rebs. !!

Agree to disagree on POY.
If Sanborn doesn't get POY I will be shocked. But TP does it all and that is what POY is. TP lead his team from a 4th place pre-season to a #1 tournament seed.  My opionion is just that. I have seen a lot of games this season of all these teams.

I would equate this discussion to the following:  "who would you rather have; Kobe Bryant at the top of his game, or Shaq at the top of his game?"

When Shaq and Kobe were winning NBA titles with the Lakers, everybody knew that Kobe was a truly great player who could "do it all".  At the end of the day though, the more valuable player is the dominant big man who takes the pressure off of all the other players and frees them up to be their best.

POY:  Tyler Sanborn

Good point deangn, well taken. I will be happy for Sanborn when they announce it at the banquet and I watch him receive it, he is no doubt deserving of it.

Impressive the trouble I can stir up with just a few words.

Good point, Todd Phillips may have a better "all around" game;  he's a better ball handler.  Phillips might be a little more fit, I think he gets more minutes.  And Tyler is not the guy you want on the FT line at the end of the game.

Sanborn's ball handling has come a long way though, and you don't get that many rebound by having slippery hands.  That's for sure.

However, in conference play, the gap in rebounding and FG % between the first place buy (Sanborn) and everyone else is remarkable.
Tyler has five more rpg than Brian Goetsch;  if you move down another five, you'd get a ton of players.
Tyler has 4.7% higher fg% than Vaughn;  The next 4.7% includes quite a few guys.

Tyler also plays really good defense.

You've reminded me how good Todd Phyillips is, and the point is well taken.  But I'm still choosing Sanborn for POY.  Either way, I'll roll with the outcome and understand the case for it.

An NO WAY would I laugh Stephen Fields for POY.  Respectable case.

I just got word that Coach Dean is going to be on the Mac McDonald show soon. It's an ESPN radio show in Virginia

National Sports Rankings

I've just added 2009-10 division 3 teams to the simulation I've been working on. There is a headline, box score and player stats. Here are a few sample games. Hit play again for a different result each time.

I've added accurate player stats and rosters to four leagues so far, the rest have generic rosters:

NJAC, Empire 8, Sunyac, ODA

NJAC

http://nationalsportsrankings.com/joomla/index.php?option=com_oneonone&magic=965

Empire 8

http://nationalsportsrankings.com/joomla/index.php?option=com_oneonone&magic=966

Sunyac
http://nationalsportsrankings.com/joomla/index.php?option=com_oneonone&magic=967

ODA

http://nationalsportsrankings.com/joomla/index.php?option=com_oneonone&magic=968

Users can edit rosters, play teams in leagues, tournaments, seasons, series, 25 game matchup and more.

Teams are rated based on w/l records and strength of schedule. Any teams or teams that may be incorrect after playing a bunch of times I've asked users to let me know and I'll adjust them. It's not easy trying to place a number on each team, but all in all the users seem to enjoy the possibilities.

I thought some readers may be interested. If anyone wants a specific conference added with player names and up to date stats let me know I'll try to get them updated.

Stephen Fields great player, awesome player, but not in the discussion for POY.
The comment on you don't get that many rebounds with slippery hands is a bit off base he is 6'10" he will get rebounds with 1 hand!!!! As for minutes, I think Phillips plays 1 min. more than Sanborn per game.

Coach Dean will be on the Mac show I think tomorrow maybe, not sure.

Hasa, I agree with both players having a great shot. I'm convinced Sanborn will get it and think he deserves it. He is a good kid and great player. I think Phillips is also deserving.
Good Luck to everyone at tournament and safe traveling to all those making the trip. I will be cheering for the Royals hoping they don't lay an egg!!!

Yeah, but with slippery hands, they'd just be out-of-bounds to the opponent, not rebounds! ;)
