Marlins win tonight 96-80 over Wesley.  Not listed on the men's scores for some reason..but they played and won..Off to a great start...3-0.  5 players in double figures tonight.  A young team with no seniors but they will be contenders this year. Go Marlins!

Tigers defeat Methodist, 75-64.  Top scorers were Harrison George with 21, Randall Ward with 17, and Ben Jessee with 12.  A lot of good playing time by Colin O'Neill, Alex Potapov, and newcomers Kobe Williamson, Jack Sumner, Devin Johnson, and Ru White.  The team is fast and will rebound well!  They're still young as a team -- the 9 guys who got most of the playing time tonight include only 2 players who have been on the team for more than 1 season --  and I think they have the right chemistry and work ethic to develop into a very excellent team.

The Tiger football team hosts Montclair State tomorrow in their first-round NCAA Tournament game.  The game starts AT NOON --  in 14 hours and 19 minutes!  GO TIGERS!

I went to tonight's games, Ralph.  The score was tight until the 6 minute mark (52-47 GC) but GC went on a 16-point run and then made their FT's to close it out.  It was a bit "chippy" with some rough play at times.  Based on what I saw in the opener, I think McMurry is a better team than Averett, but AU's only 50 miles away and they may have a good fan base for a Saturday afternoon game.

Tonight was the Josh Pittman show - as the sophomore guard put up 16 in the first half and finished with 23.  I've been telling folks he'll be the next GCQ star and tonight did nothing to disprove that.  After getting burned in the first 20 minutes, the McMurry Coach told his defenders to find out what flavor gum he was chewing in the second.  lol

Anyway, Saturday will see:

Averett vs McMurry, 3 pm EST
Guilford vs Emory, 5 pm EST

WLU finished off Haverford, albeit they let them hang around.  It was not the prettiest game in the world from what I can gather watching on internet.  One major concern is having only 6 assist to 17 TO's.  Usually you don't win like that, but somehow they found a way.  One major plus, they are getting to the FT line on a consistent basis which may take away the assist.  Haverford obviously isn't a bunch of world beaters, but a wins a win with a young team that should come away this weekend 3-0 as they play Swarthmore today.  The young kids seem to be playing well and learning from their mistakes.  It will take some time, but if they can continue improving, it should be interesting for them when ODAC play begins.  2-0 nevertheless, so its a start.

I can't remember a time since becoming a Randolph-Macon fan where we've had a team better poised to do so well as this year. I am really looking forward to this season. GO JACKETS!

Valid concern, but hopefully all the seniors will be able to handle that. ;D

Hasanova, thanks for the comments.

We have a new head coach, 28-year-old Matt Garnett. Coach Garnett, a 2004 Wayland Baptist (NAIA-1) grad,   has been on the McMurry radar screen since high school, when Coach Holmes tried to recruit him as a player.  Former head coach Ron Holmes wanted a solid successor for the McMurry program, which has had 2 head coaches since 1960.  I think that we have found him.

Yes, Pittman is a very, very good player.  He hit everything that he put up tonight, including some incredible desperation shots.  The ODAC is a place to make a name for himself.

I am not sure how far along McMurry is in working as a team. There are only 4 players on the roster who are left over from last year.  We lost 6 seniors, and some of the "role players" may have seen the change in coaching as a reason to go elsewhere.

Thanks for Guilford for the video feed.

I wasn't figuring for Guilford to bounce back from that Greensboro loss to beat Methodist and McMurry, especially McMurry.  Hey this year is exceeding expectations already.  Go Quakers!

Hampden-Sydney defeated UVA-Wise this afternoon in the championship game of their Tip-Off Tournament, 90-77.  A very fast-paced game.  Hampden-Sydney hit 58% of their shots, 41% from behind the arc.  Harrison George led all scorers with 28 points and 11 rebounds.  Other top scorers for the Tigers were Ben Jessee with 15, Ru White with 14, Colin O'Neill with 11, and Khobi Williamson with 9.

Harrison George was the (obvious) tournament MVP, with 48 points and 20 rebounds in 2 games.  The Tigers have now begun their season with 2 wins over solid competition.

They head to Elon on Monday night for their only DI game this season .... and then to Shenandoah next weekend for the South Region Hoops Challenge, playing Shenandoah on Saturday and North Carolina Wesleyan on Sunday.  Then ... their first ODAC game this season, and a big one ... traveling to EMU on Wednesday the 1st of December for their only battle with the Runnin' Royals during the regular season.

Ralph, what looks like a desperation shot for Pittman is actually most likely something he's practiced.  The more I learn about the kid, the more I know he's been a real gym rat over the years.  It may look like a wild shot to anyone else, but it's in his "repertoire."
