We also shot 34% from the field ,went 3-18 beyond the arch, and shot 47%from the free throw line-not gonna beat many teams like that! We did hold them to less than 40% shooting, which is our trademark, but still lost...BADLY!....ALOT of basketball left to play! VWC coming to Crenshaw wed nite-we'll see now how they respond! Go Jackets-we still love you!

Well put. But credit Wabash with playing a great game -- I was there. They have incerdible hustle, defend with terrific intensity, and rebound really well. After the Jackets and Wabash beat UW-LaX and Otterbein easily Friday night I was puzzled about how today's game would go. Then when Otterberin beat UW-LaX in the consolation game I said "Uh oh." Turned out that was a realistic reaction. Plus Wabash has a senior guard named Wes Smith who had two monster games and is one of the hardest to guard D3 players I've seen in the past ten seasons. Don't know what he's done the past three years, but he's averaging 25+ ppg and almost 6 rebounds per game this season. He was clearly a better player than UW-LaX's Tony Mane who is a pre-season 4th team all-american. Smith plays on a better team, but he's the guy doing it all right now. No one else on Wabash is even close to scoring in double figures. Wabash may have earned themselves some top 25 votes with today's win.

P.S. I also want to say thanks to the R-MC parents who treated this grizzled old grad so kindly. Very nice people.

I wasnt belittling the play of Wabash-Quite the contrary-I'm VERY sure they put it to us and their defense is the reason we played so badly.Like Jacketlawyer said,I think we'll be fine,too.......We're gonna lose a few.....just hope we learn a little from each one.... :-\

The Quakers host NC Wesleyan Wednesday night (Dec. 1) at 7 pm.  Based on HSC's win, this should give us an idea of how competitive we'll be this year.

For rmc1982, I didn't mean to imply that you were belittling Wabash. My apologies if it came across that way. I just thought it might help for readers of this board to have an eye witness account to add a little perspective to the stats. And I agree that a loss or two can be a good thing. I even said as much, late in the game, to a couple of the parents in attendance -- and they agreed. They were also quite complimentary of Coach Davis.

Hasa - keep your eye on #30 of NC Wesleyan. If he gets free he's going to light it up. We saw him vs. HSC on Sunday in Winchester and he's a scrappy three-ball shooter. HSC got wise to him in the second half and shut him down.

Wish I could come up wed nite to Crenshaw to see the VWC game but I've got biz obligations and can't make it(its a 1 1/2 hr trip each way for me as I'm in the Hampton Roads area)Cheer 'em on for me! I'll listen to Marty and co and try to get the video feed......GO JACKETS!

Wish I could make it Wednesday night, but I live in Saint Louis, MO so Crawfordsville, IN is only 4-4 1/2 hours from me, but Ashland is two days away by car. Anytime the Jackets get west of Ohio I try to see them. In 2004 it was Bloomington, IL at Illinois Wesleyan. They haven't made it this far west since then, so it was good to see them again. I've taken vacation and been to Ashland a few times between 2004 and this past weekend. I saw this year's seniors play as freshmen on my most recent trip back East.

Thanks, jww.  I'll keep #30 on my radar.  This is a different Guilford team than we've seen the last 4 years, but still fun to watch.  I never want to underestimate them, and I hope they exceed my early assessment, but I think they're about a 15-17 win team in the regular season.  This is partly based on how tough the ODAC will be this year!

New Top 25 Poll out:

#3    Eastern Mennonite    5-0

#7    Randolph-Macon    4-1

#9    Virginia Wesleyan    6-0

#25  Christopher Newport (despite 22-point loss to Virginia Wesleyan)

Guilford is still getting some votes, even with their 3-2 record (!) ....  and so is Ferrum, a team that is undefeated.

Washington and Lee (4-0) and Hampden-Sydney (4-0 in DIII action) are not showing up on the radar.  That'll definitely change if the Tigers get a win tomorrow evening in Harrisonburg.

The other big game tomorrow evening is Virginia Wesleyan @ R-MC.

Really thought the Jackets would drop lower than 7th but......we'll take it! After tomorrow night in Crenshaw we'll see if it was warranted.......Go Jackets!.....then ......not long after that.....we visit EMU in Harrisonburg-OUCH!!

Anyone seen the EMUs play this year so far?  And who have they played? ???
" and do as adversaries do in law, strive mightily, but eat and drink as friends." -The Taming of the Shrew

I haven't seen them play yet, but they are the same guys that made it to the Elite Eight last year.  No one from that team is gone!

Tood Phillips leads the team, with 16.5 points and 5 rebounds a game.  George Johnson is averaging 16.5 points/game.  D. J. Hinson has been averaging 11.4 points and Eli Crawford another 9.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.  Randell Smith, Randall Thorne, and Orie Pancione are all averaging another 8 to 9 points/game.

About 1/3rd of their shots are from behind the arc, but they're hitting only 29% of those to date.  Their foul shooting has also been pretty bad (.658).

The Runnin' Royals will face their toughest opponent so far this season tomorrow night in Hampden-Sydney.  Neither EMU nor Hampden-Sydney has yet lost a DIII game.  There is only one team who has been a common opponent of both EMU and H-SC: Shenandoah.  Both EMU and H-SC beat Shenandoah by approximately 10 points.  While EMU, playing at home, must be the favorite .... the game will be fast and furious and should be a good one!
