Speaking of the VWC men.....it should be a VERY interesting game tonight against the EMUs.....On one hand, the EMUs desperately need a win against a quality opponent to even be mentioned for an at-large bid, and even then its a longshot.I still feel they have to win the tournament to get in, and H-SC is WHITE-HOT right now and could walk into Roanoke and steal it!On the other hand, after the debacle at H-SC the Wily Fox KingFish Macedo should have his boys ready for the shootout that is sure to occur tonight. The EMUs are tailor-made for Macedo's style of play and if I had to bet I'd probably give the Fish a slight edge,as they will be coming into Harrisonburg with a chip on their shoulder after the loss to the Tigers. This should be one GREAT ballgame!! Any of you FISH-ermen going to be in attendance this evening, or are you succumbing to your Valentine's wishes and staying home to keep the peace?... ;) :D ;D ::) :P

I wasn't there but I've read enough to understand that the Marlins were not behaving very well in Fleet. As I age in place, I must admit that flagrant fouls, engaging the crowd negatively, baiting refs and other players are not good things and I have less and less patience for them. I wonder, though, if it's a one way street and if, and I know it's a long shot, the Tiger faithful had anything to do with it. I think it's just possible that a younger group of guys can be influenced into behaving badly by an older, more experience group of guys. That being said, I still don't condone profanity and poor sportsmanship even if the game is heated and the officiating is not going your way. That's my two cents worth on the subject for this Monday morning. Happy Valentine's Day everybody!

Tough week ahead for several teams - glad the Quakers aren't one of the teams faced with three games!  Guilford travels to Sydney at 7 pm on Wednesday night - always a tough place to play - and especially so with the Tigers so hot right now.  Then the Quakers draw EMU at home at 3 pm on Saturday to close the regular season.  Will we finish 10-6, 11-5 or 12-4?  Who knows?

If the Quakers win both (possible), VWC loses twice this week (unlikely) and RMC loses once (they host HSC), then the Quakers would win the ODAC because they have the tie-breaker over both teams head-to-head.  Not counting my chickens before they hatch, but wouldn't that be something?!

^Yes!  It would be something that the Jackets & Marlins don't want to happen & will surely do their best to prevent!  But, best of luck to you Quakers anyway!

We'd much rather have 1 game this week than 3... & we think the Jackets will be READY to play on Saturday & the home crowd will be there in another sell out.

Good luck to all the teams this week & safe travels.

GO JACKETS!!!!

I agree with JWW on a number of his points regarding the VWC/HSC conduct issue.  However, I don't really have a major problem with the on the court talking, flag fouls etc...but the bench guys need to keep their mouths shut.  If the events unfolded as have been described by multiple people...well...the bench guys (from any team) cannot respond.  As someone who sat on the bench for four years(are rarely left) I am familiar with the types of things fans (and especially the HSC fans) can throw at you.  It can get very ugly and very personal in any rivalry game.  My suggestion to VWC...win games, thump your chest and point to the ceiling (that's where our national championship banner hangs) but leave the debating to us old guys here on this board.

And lastly...Isn't it more fun to follow ODAC basketball with an easily identifiable villain?  If we had a league full of Guilford's (sorry hasa) I'm not sure I would waste my time following! I LIKE that I don't like HSC/RMC (and miss hating Roanoke too!) and that they don't like us.  So I hope the Marlins continue to be cocky, the Tigers continue to be snobs, the quakers continue to be boring and the yellow jackets continue to be stuffy aaaaahhnnyway.  Go Marlins!!!

I'll accept the Quakers as boring as long as their achievements on the court are properly acknowledged as well.  I'll sign on for boring and awesome right now.

Hahaha. I'm enjoying all the banter. What I really think should happen is that the Marlins should trade their road sweats for sport coats and bow ties. The very change could alter their attitudes. Don't you think ;)

Leave the bow ties to us over at Hampden-Sydney! haha

oldfish

And ANOTHER thing...Guilford IS boring and the only reason they are having any success in basketball is due to their VWC trained head coach! Dont worry Lynchburg I'm sure we will train another winner that you can have someday soon!

(tongue firmly in cheek for those of you that think I might be serious)

I do.  Maybe not bow ties, but I do think a coat and tie put you in a more civil state of mind ... and that applies to all ODAC schools.  :)

OK now, here's a history lesson for all you youngsters. Listen carefully to the story of the origin of the phrase "thugs from the beach." Once upon a time, there was a brand new coach from Wilkes University name of Dave Macedo, a brash young fellow who was given the chance to take over a so-so basketball program. That was about 11 years ago! His very first recruit was a tough guy name of Doino, Dave Doino, a hard nosed player who resembled a football linebacker :o The guy could flat out play! Along with Doino were Wallace, Kahle, Hammonds, Fisher, Parks, Blazer, Warren, Gobble, and a kid named Adair. They played in the bubble, their games were at a local high school. They became legend for their hard scrabble play. They started to get attention. They would warm up before games to some hard - nosed rap. One in particular would wear his favorite cut-off Giants tee shirt for shoot around. A year or two in to Macedo's reign, the Marlins started to get noticed. By year four or five, they won their first ODAC title in many years. The rest is history. The moniker "thugs from the beach" was bestowed upon them lovingly by their competition and fans alike. Yeah, they were tough guys all right. Not like today's kids, just tough guys. And that, my friends is the story of the "thugs from the beach." ;D :D ;D :D
