ODAC Basketball

Dwayne,

I am not counting the Marlins out at all. I was just saying it is harder to live up to expectations as EMU and RMU found out this year. Another thing I would like to say is that personally I do not feel any of these three teams underachieved. They all had years that the majority of DIII teams would kill to have. Recruiting might be a tougher for the Marlins only because they do not have any seniors. Not many kids that are extremely talented are going to walk into a situation that they have to wait a few years to play. This is the time you get kids that you know you will have to develop. If the Marlins want to make a real run at it next year they will have to have acquire more talent down low. Look at most teams that make it to the final four. They have a dominate inside presence (I.E. Brandon Adair, Ben Strong, Tyler Sanborn or even last year's Brandon Braxton/Danny Jones). If they do get a few good posts then watch out, they may sneak back to Salem.

They don't have to get anyone new, the guys they have just have to develop, which they will... two of their posts, Ali Brown and Rakeem Davis, got significant minutes for the first time and the also had a pair of 6'6" freshman, who I'm sure will develop for next season. They don't have to make any major recruiting hauls this year. Also, Dave Macedo will get good players pretty much no matter what... can't remember the last time he pulled in a sub-par recruiting class.... I still don't understand doubting the Marlins... EMU not making the tournament didn't have anything to do with the quality of their team, as VWC themselves found out.... VWC returns their entire roster and have made the NCAA Tournament seven consecutive seasons.. I still see no reason why they won't again have this success, or won't advance past the sweet 16 round. That game last Saturday could have gone either way. I'll actually go ahead and predict that VWC will be the team hosting a sectional next season. Those players on VWC are hungry and I can guarantee you they aren't satisfied with what they accomplished this season. Yes they made it to the sweet 16, but they didn't win the ODAC, nor did they beat Guilford or EMU so they still have alot they want to accomplish next season, instead of just being satisfied with just making it back to the tournament again.

They also have the South Region Rookie of the year on their roster, so I'm sure they aren't worried about their chances of sustaining success next season.

I do think VWC would greatly benefit if they had just one guy on the roster who could be a legitimate scoring threat on the low post, rather than having to rely on the perimeter game for the large majority of the offense.

Surprised no comments about the South All-Region team announced today with Todd Phillips (EMU) on 1st team, Harrison George (HSC) on the 2nd team, and Colton Hunt (Rand) and Danny Jones (RMC) on the 3rd team - D.J Woodmore was Rookie of the Year for the South Region - Player of the year was Derek Mitchell of Ferrum - I watched him against HSC and even with a hurt ankle, he almost brought them a victory at the end. With 3 of the 5 ODAC representatives back next year - it is going to be a fun one to watch and enjoy

Hey, HSCDad.  I saw the list and got too busy to comment, but congratulations to all.  I think you'll see Josh Pittman crack this list next year.

If they could get that Ali kid (6' 7" 250ish I believe) to assert himself a lil more (or get more PT) he could be the link they're missing in the short term, next year in particular, although he would need to improve his FT% lol..Granted idk much about the kid or anything in depth, but he is a big boy and I know when they came to EMU and he played the last 4-7 mins he was getting the ball down low and getting to the line at will!!....Either way, I believe they need a big man that can run the court a lil to fit into their program's style. They could be very explosive with a big man down low to go along with all the slashers and three ballers they have on that roster!

I agree next year Josh Pittman should be there, Hasanova. That release that he has on 3 ponters is almost unstoppable (although Ru White blocked two as I remember). I would not be surprised to see Nate Campbell from Lynchburg and Ru White from H-SC also high on conference and regional lists.  Since both transferred in as Juniors, little was known about them early in the year but at year end both were on fire.  Again, the ODAC talent continues to grow for all teams.

Nate Campbell actually transferred in as a sophomore considering this was his second year in the league and he still has one year left.

Thanks for correction on Nate Campbell

Good games in Salem tonight - St. Thomas and Wooster both made come backs to win.  I remember that St. Thomas, on their home court, beat H-SC in the mid 1990's when H-SC was moving up the ladder in the Div III payoffs.

Announced D3hoops All-Americans - Todd Phillp EMU  Honorable Mention    D J  Woodmore  VWC was named National Freshman of Year- quite an honor - area player Derek Mitchell - Ferrum made 3rd team

I know it may be too early, but now that the season is officially over, what are everyone's ODAC predictions for next year? My top 3 are VWC, HSC, and GC. VWC brings back their entire roster, including National FOY DJ Woodmore, HSC brings back Harrison George, Ru White, Randall Ward, and a host of talented players, and GC brings back Josh Pittman, who proved to be the next great perimeter marksman from GC. I almost would put RMC in at 3rd, but they lose some big pieces in Brandon Braxton, Jordan Brown, Eric Pugh, and Danny Jones..... what do you guys think?
