I have been reading this board for nearly 10 years now and although I rarely post, I must say that the Marlins have always seemed to have a target on their back, regardless of their ranking by anyone. National recognition is not new to the Marlins. They have a quality program, are well coached and if someone other than D3hoops sees fit to rank them at #1, it is still an honor and a credit to the school, basketball staff and players. Because of their expertise and knowledge of basketball, any team ranked by D3hoops in the top ten or even the top twenty five, will automatically be targeted. How high D3hoops puts the Marlins will not make much of a difference to them. The size of the target is immaterial, how they respond to the target is what counts. They are in one of the toughest conferences in the country and every game in the ODAC is important. The ODAC is no cakewalk.
You're right, the ODAC is no cakewalk.  Even though they're a preseason #1 in one poll, I predict the Marlins MBB team will lose at least four games in 2011-12 - regular season and postseason combined.

Well, all I can say is as long as VWC beats Guilford then I will be completely happy...lol..It's rather early for any sort of predictions but the Marlins will be in the top tier of the ODAC again as long as everyone stays healthy.  That's as far as I will go at this point in time.

I understand.  MBB wins over the Marlins are very satisfying.

nova - excellent point my friend. Do we know yet how many times the Fish play the Quakers, the Tigers, or RMC?

LOL! See what I mean! Everyone wants to beat the Marlins, and I'm sure they'll find greater satisfaction in doing so if VWC faces off against your respective teams and takes an L! When VWC was fresh off their national championship, every road environment was hostile and they got every team's best shot. I remember watching them face E&H, HSC, Guilford and RMC on the road and they went against some very raucous crowds. I also remember on VWC's 1st road game that season, they traveled to Averett and the AU crowd might have been the best one they had faced all year. The student section was clad with all white and they had the gym rocking the entire night. When AU beat VWC that night, the students and players all stormed the court and celebrated like they had just won the championship right there. Heck, I remember a few years ago when VWC upset Guilford at VWC when GC had started the season ranked in the top 3 fresh off their trip to the final four. The VWC crowd was electric and VWC probably played their best game that season, and their players also celebrated like they had won the World Series. Yes teams love to beat VWC, but I'm sure a win over the Marlins and any other team for that matter is a bit more sweeter when they are ranked at or near the top. And I wasn't saying that because TSN said so, VWC was designated as the "team to beat", but taking into account the Marlins success over the past few years and the season they had this past year and what they bring back in addition to a publication such as TSN giving them the preseason nod as the no. 1 ranked team, teams will be more amped to play VWC and will take more pride in a victory over the Marlins. If and that's a BIG IF (  ;) kidding guys...) lol when someone beats VWC this season I'd be willing to bet someone brings up the fact that they beat a team who was ranked by TSN as the preseason no. 1 and there will be some sort of celebration. Might even hear a few "overrated" chants at the end of the game haha

and I'll be happy as well.... Guilford has an 8-1 record against VWC over the past 4 years. Without even doing any research I KNOW that this is the best record against VWC for any team in the ODAC.

I haven't done my research, but I bet the record was reversed for several years before that, especially during Adair's time at VWC.  Being a ranked team for several seasons put a target on Guilford's back too (and RMC and EMU) - that's just sports psychology.  An undermanned Guilford team beat VWC in Greensboro last season and the students stormed the court also.  As I've mentioned before, Guilford fans get up for VWC as much or more than any other team we face (including Greensboro), although RMC, HSC and, more recently, EMU are in the mix as well.

Nov. 30 - RMC at VWC
1/4 - VWC at HSC
2/8 - VWC at RMC
2/11 - HSC at VWC

Guilford's schedule and VWC's schedule aren't up yet. The Fish only played the Quakers once last year.

If GC and VWC only play once in 2011-12, it's a pretty safe bet it'll be at the beach.

I'm thinking they might play twice this year.

James Robbins, a post player for Davidson County Community College, is transferring to Guilford after one season with the Storm.  James played his HS ball in High Point.  In his lone season at DCCC, he played for Head Coach (and former Guilford Assistant Coach) Matt Ridge.  The Storm were 34-2 in 2010-11 and reached the NJCAA DIII Final Four.  Good luck as a Quaker, James!

Brian Hamilton

If I am not mistaken, RMC and VWC are two of HSC's defined (rivalries) and as such they play them twice every year.

Lynchburg's schedule, I think that they're going to suprise some people this year and wow they play 2 D1s back to back  :o

Some might say that playing back to back D-1's is over reaching. Perhaps those are a couple  nice paydays for Lynchburg. At least they'll have 2 weeks to recuperate before they face the Fish at the Beach.

Heard Guilford's going to have a 6'7" transfer from DII St. Augustine's in Raleigh.  At 240-245, he might be a wide body in the middle.
