CNU is a legit squad. From what I was told from their closed scrimmage, the CNU interior D is tough and physical and they hit the boards hard like a Michigan State team does, and they backed up the statement on rebounding last night it looks like.

I don't know if they will win the USA South or not, but if Ferrum is supposed to be the third best team, based on the USASAC preseason poll, it doesn't look like there will be much competition in that conference. Either way, it's a good W for an R-MC team that had a lot of question marks coming in to the season.

Very cool that Andre Simon, who played a total of 43 minutes and scored a total of 14 points as a frosh last season gets 28 minutes and 28 points in the first game of his sophomore year at R-MC. Not expecting that every game, of course, but perhaps there is some talent in Ashland that we didn't get a very good look at last season.
I said before that we would play well at home and beat a few teams we shouldn't......and also, like any young team, that we would choke a few we shouldn't.Last night was our night to shine!!Also cool that a Newport News kid From Menchville High-a stone's throw from CNU- would be the one with the dagger!! 28 from a sophomore??? Very cool indeed!! Great job Jackets!
"We're completely surrounded-Excellent!...Now we can attack in any direction!'....Chesty Puller, USMC

The Guilford Quakers over the Greensboro Pride tonight, 60-59, at GCP's Hanes Gym.  I couldn't attend, but it must have been SRO if Greensboro squeezed in 1300.  GCQ took the final lead with about 4 minutes to go and survived a GCP missed 3-point attempt at the buzzer.  Depending on how Guilford's tournament goes Friday night, the two teams could face each other again on Saturday.

It's always good to get a win. Nevertheless, based on the fact Shenandoah finished dead last in the USA South, they must really be pretty limited .... to put it nicely.  Averett was running tight with Shenandoah for the last-place spot in the preseason poll and should likely lose whenever they face an ODAC squad this season.

Overall, I'm not seeing quality non-conference opponents in the schedules of our ODAC teams this season.  Please tell me which matchups I'm overlooking.

Guilford has an interesting (and tough!) three-game stretch in late December:  Maryville at home on the 17th, at St. Mary's (MD) on the 28th and at Emory on the 31st.

I watched some of this game last night online. Seems to me that Greensboro's undoing was the failure to box out on missed free throws by Guilford late in the game. Three times Guilford got the rebound and a put back. Those six points were huge for the Quakers. And yes, the gym was packed. It's no wonder those free throws were missed, having to take them in the face of the Greensboro student section behind the backboard. Tough place for a visiting team to play.

Thanks for the update, y_jack_lok.  I wanted to go, but simply couldn't.  I noticed the low FT percentage for Guilford, but I'm not surprised since I know how that Gym is configured.  I'm absolutely certain there were hundreds of people waving their arms and yelling behind the basket.  I guess that's the way a rivalry game should be.  :)

H-SC has N.C. Wesleyan, picked to win the USA South. They also have Huntingdon, who nearly beat #22 Birmingham Southern, so either that game was a fluke, BSU is overrated, or they are improved from last year

Algernon - The Marlins are playing Trinity University and Soutwestern Tex. over Thanksgiving. Trinity was 16-11 last year and lost to DePauw in the SCAC semis. Also on the schedule are Wesley and Haverford: Wesley was 18-11 last year but pretty good in 2009-10 winning the CAC and going to the NCAA tournament. And Haverford was 14-12 last year and seems to be pretty good. We'll see!

I do not see Colton Hunt's name in box scores for Randolph"s last 2 games. Is he injured?

These games take place at R-MC. The results could provide informative comparisons between R-MC and the Marlins, since they each play Trinity and Southwestern . Of added interest to me, as an R-MC alum, is how the Jackets fare against Southwetern, since that is my wife's alma mater. They were 6-19 last season and have already lost to Hardin-Simmons 91-63.

Guilford hosts a tournament in Ragan-Brown Fieldhouse tonight and tomorrow.  The Quakers face the Johnson & Wales (NC) Wildcats at 6 pm followed by Greensboro versus Bridgewater (VA) at 8.  Consolation and championship games on Saturday at 1 pm and 3 pm, respectively.

He's missed every game this year (including the Liberty exhibition). He is a good kid, so I can only assume injury at this point.
