Just back from Guilford  Sad to see H-SC fall but 17  3 pointers by Guilford was hard to combat.  H-SC defense would hold for 30 seconds and then one of 4 Guilford shooters was open for a three - most times it striped the net.  They have more pure shooters than I have ever seen in Div III - to score 51 points in a half against H-SC pressing defense was a great job and they won in a big way,
HSCDad, it was a pretty good college basketball game last night, don't you think?  I was actually hoping a few hundred HSC students and the Tiger mascot would show up as they did two years ago.  The Tigers have some long and lean "athletes" - probably one of the most athletic teams the Quakers have faced this season.  Guilford does have some three point firepower and many of them were very timely last night.  Gabriel Lowder (#5) is having an especially good senior season in this regard.  Trust me, the Quaker players, coaches and fans all take a game versus the talented Tigers very seriously.  It was a big relief to win last night.  Thanks for making the trip to Ragan Brown!  Good luck the rest of the season - unless, of course, you happen to face the Quakers again in Salem.  :)

Agreed, on paper, the Tigers look like a winning team: big and athletic.  I've pulled for this team all year (but not Saturday), not sure why they've not won more.  Can someone help me understand what's missing with this HSC team, because I thought they'd be much better this year.

I've not been able to watch HSC play much in person due to knee replacement surgery but the few times I've seen them I really thought they would be much better. Every time they get beat it seems to be for a different reason; The home blow out loss to VWC was because HSC tired to run with VWC and that was a really big mistake (that day, VWC was the best team I have ever seen play in Fleet. They were assume) but throughout the game HSC seemed to have moments where the defense just totally disappeared. They got beat @ RMC by giving up 86 points, I didn't see the game but sounds like defense not very good; they loss to VWC at the beach because they were 14 of 29 from the foul line. You can't beat a good team shouting that poorly from the line. GC beats them last night; sounds like defense was an issue as well in the second half. If you can't guard the arc against GC you're not going to win most of the time. Common theme seems to defenseive breakdowns and I really don't know what that means.

The losses to NCW and MC are just not understandable. No way should HSC have lost to those two teams, but they did and I think it prevented the Tigers from gathering momentum.

IF HSC can regroup and bring it's A game to Salem they can make some noise. I think a win Saturday could help set the satage for a good tourney, a loss will probably have an equally bad impact.

Very difficult to understand, but again, I've not been able to see too many games but from what I've seen, the talent is there and I think Dee Vick is a good coach but something is missing, at least so far.

COY- Davis lost about 80% of the people that got playing time last year and RMC is sitting at 2nd in the ODAC

POY- VWC DJ Woodmore kid has been killing it all season and can hurt you on both offense and defense

FOY- RMC Marcus Badger I've seen the kid play around 4 times and he is real good he is the glue to RMCs offense

All ODAC- Harrison George HSC, JD Ey W and L, DJ Woodmore VWC, Donald Vaughn VWC, Adam Desgain RMC, Colton Hunt Randolph

My picks:

COY- Davis, RMC

POY- D.J. Woodmore, VWC, or Harrison George, HSC

FOY- Ed Reddick, BC

All ODAC 1st Team - Harrison George, HSC,  DJ Woodmore, VWC, Donald Vaughn, VWC, Colton Hunt, Randolph, Kwasi Amponsah, RC, Austin Chillemi, LC

All ODAC 2nd Team - J.D. Ey, W&L, Gabriel Lowder, GC, Josh Pittman, GC, Chris Astorga, VWC, Calvin Croskey, RMC, Ben Jessee, HSC

Their defense has been excellent many times this season, but "defensive breakdowns" have definitely been a big problem, especially under the basket with the younger HSC players.  Also, the Tigers FT shooting has sometimes been terrible.

They played very solid in the close loss at the beach on Saturday.  If they bring their A game to Salem, they can defeat Lynchburg in the quarterfinals, VWC in the semis, and either RMC or Guilford in the championship game.  Go Tigers!

Surprised that no one has mentioned that the Virginians were taken to OT by LC?

I've seen Lynchburg play and if they are hitting the 3 to go along with their big men they can be a very dangerous team to play when it comes to the ODAC tournament

From what I saw Lynchburg hit a half court shot at the buzzer that would have won the game for them but the coach had called timeout already.

I did notice the OT result last night.  I did not see them defeat Guilford at Lynchburg, but the Hornets must be a much improved team over the past several years.  Let's face it, for several years, the upper echelon of the ODAC could almost count on wins every time they played LC.  Evidently, that's no longer true and, frankly, that's good for Lynchburg College and the ODAC.  I would not be surprised by an LC upset in Salem.

HSCDad

Thanks for prior note Hasanova but let's not hope that Lynchburg pulls a Salem upset as they might be playing H-SC on Friday!!  Right about different reasons for H-SC losses.  I have seen most of the losses from the stands.  Their talent is deep and a lot of players play - usually 13 or so with minutes.  Rotation changes frequently and that can effect defensive assignments moreso than offensive playsmaking.  Maybe that has a bearing on the outcomes.  Example: Guilford, last night, brought the ball in three times right under their basket with the same results -lob with the scorer catching in the air and shooting with positive results before touching the floor - maybe once but not 3 times?

Yeah, I was also fascinated by Guilford's success with those inbounds plays.  All three worked to perfection - you might hope to be successful once or even twice, but then you'd expect a good team's defense to adjust.  Six points can be key in a close game.  As they say, "keep doing it until they stop you!"  Hampden-Sydney is a team to be taken seriously - they are certainly deep, athletic, quick and, I think, generally well coached!

The ODAC board has gone strangely quiet...

Going to be watching baseball games live tomorrow, but we will be following men's & women's basketball via odaconline.

Good luck to all for the final regular season weekend!

GO JACKETS!!!!
