It's not a DIII school, but I think the University of Florida did it.  I know this has been discussed before, but (in my mind) the WIAC is not representative of most DIII conferences and it's beginning to show even more.  UWSP won in basketball two years ago and, of course, UWW's on a three year run in football.

Like 25% of Division III, the WIAC is state schools, yes. I am not sure it's beginning to show even more, but they are definitely winning the sports we follow most.

Hi, Pat.  I agree with your point about the sports "we follow most" - that is, football and basketball - I realize there are a lot of other DIII sports in the championship mix.  In many other states - and NC is a good example - state-supported schools the size of most of the WIAC institutions would be either DII or mid-major DI's (FCS).  Another factor in Wisconsin's case is the University of Wisconsin, Madison.  They are the only DI football school in the state (I think there are a couple of other DI's in basketball - Marquette, UW-GB and UW-Milwaukee).  Meanwhile, NC has 18 plus another dozen or so DII's.  I also realize North Carolina has more population than Wisconsin (9.7 Million to 5.7 million), but the talent drop to the DIII WIAC after UW-Wisconsin finishes their recruiting cannot be as steep as the drop in North Carolina from the ACC, Conference USA, Southern, MEAC, Big South, CIAA, SAC 8 and Peach Belt (et al) to the ODAC and the USASAC.  Can it?

Must be some really good players outside the ODAC since they went through 20 players before the one and only ODAC player was mentioned on the 2011-12 Div III All-American team - DJ Woodmore as a Honorable Mention.  Obvious that making it to the final 16 or 8 is important to get a player ranked.
But Matt Addsion from HSU did not even make it out of the ASC Tourney.  However, he performed on the national showcase in the D3Hoops Las Vegas Holiday tournament last December..

That tourney should become a classic showcase for quality talent.

I agree with your point. Virginia has the same situation with many 1AA programs in football; VMI, William & Mary, JMU, Richmond, ODU, Norfolk State, Hampton University, Liberty University ..... many of the players on these teams would be playing in the WIAC if located in Wisconsin... so really the playing field is not to be compared to most D111 schools with limited enrollment and high tuition cost. Certainly explains how UWW dominates.  D111 schools recruit with the 1AA's mentioned knowing each school will only sign about 15 kids each year; the D111's will get some that are not offered or that are offered a "preferred" walk on spot.

i have no historical data as a point of reference, but if my calculations are correct, 3 of the 14 national champions crowned to this point have been public schools - this represents 21% of the national championships, which is in line with the ratio of public schools in the ncaa - it would be interesting to have comparative data to see if publics are, indeed, winning more...but i don't have the desire to mine for that data right now :)

That is actually a great point. Lots of guys stay in state to go to college anyway, and going to a school like UWSP or UW-W instead of Wisconsin to those kids is the same as kids going to VCU or ODU instead of UVA or VT

Brian Hamilton

Might want to go to VCU for basketball rather than VT right now. ::)

Sometime in the middle of last decade I counted all the championships up and for two years running, it was right around 25% as well. But can't remember which years.

If you're a Guilford College fan, it'll never get old.  I'm sure RMC folks see this like a bad dream.

Love that highlight.  Thanks for posting the link.

Hampden-Sydney folks are always Guilford fans when the other team on the court is Randolph-Macon ... ;)

Ben Strong's response, after the ball swishes the net, is great.
