Quakes lost at Averett last night, 82-77.  AU put up 51 in first half and shot well.  GC actually took the lead at 71-70, but two quick threes by the Cougars were the difference.  Guilford had a chance to tie at 80 with about 4 seconds to go, but missed a three and then had to foul AU with 2.2 seconds left.

Wow didn't see that one coming after the year Averett had last year, very good win for their program

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Shenandoah University turned in the biggest men's basketball comeback of coach Rob Pryor's 31-game head coaching career with a 70-63 win over Mary Washington Wednesday afternoon.

The Hornets (2-2) trailed UMW by 16-points at the halftime break, but stole the victory on the strength of a 49-point second half.

SU shot a sizzling 16 of 27 (59.3 percent) in the second half as it outscored the Eagles (0-2) 49-26.

Trailing 37-21 at the break, the Hornets held UMW without a point for the first 4:57 of the second and took its first lead by scoring 24 of the first 32 points of the second.

Freshman Sharif Almulla, who finished with 10 points, gave the Hornets their first lead on a steal and layup at the 7:40 mark.

Just 15 seconds earlier, Almulla had tied the game at 45-45 on a four-point play.

The two teams then traded the lead three times and were tied on three more occasions before Xavier Alston finally have Shenandoah the lead for good on a layup with 3:50 remaining.

Alston's bucket, one of two that he had on the day, ignited a 10-3 run in just 67 seconds that gave SU total control of the contest.

The Hornets led by at least five points the remainder of the contest.

Sophomore Jared Carithers led the victors with 17 points while Bryce Mitchell added 13 and Almulla 10.

Alston had 12 of the squad's 38 rebounds. SU had a 38-35 advantage on the glass.

Shenandoah opens up its first-ever ODAC campaign on Saturday with a 2:00 home contest against Washington and Lee.

H-SC rebounding in a big way from close loss in Rocky Mount earlier in week  HS-C 59 E&H 29 at the half - George has about 20   everyone has played - E&H big guys all in foul trouble so 2nd half should give all the H-SC players a lot of playing time - freshman have looked good

HSCDad

Final  H-SC 98 E&H 64  good game  player of game Mike Murray (Freshman) with 9 assist in 11 minutes  4 rebounds and 2 steals  George had 20 point in 19 minutes as all played equally

I'd be interested in others' predictions for tomorrow evening's slate of ODAC games.  These are mine ...

Nov. 28

Randolph at Bridgewater - Randolph, a scrappy team, with Colton Hunt, that has been to the ODAC Championship game two consecutive years, should get their 1st conference win.

Lynchburg at Randolph-Macon - RMC, as I don't they'll lose at home until February 6 ... ;)

Roanoke at Virginia Wesleyan - VWC ... They will rarely get beat this season.

Eastern Mennonite at Guilford - EMU, a team that is off to an impressive start!

In case you haven't seen it, there's a nice piece on Harrison George and the Tigers at http://www.d3hoops.com/columns/around-the-region/great-lakes-south/2012-13/back-and-even-better .... written before Harrison scored 24 points in 24 minutes last night against Wesley, to go along with six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

I'll also note that Cam Anderson is the highest scoring ODAC bench player, with 12.8 pts/game (77.4% FG%) in 16.0 minutes/game (and he's also averaging 6.8 rebounds and 2.0 blocks).

Final Guilford 67, EMU 64

http://www.guilfordquakers.com/sports/mbkb/2012-13/releases/20121128txcx1g

It was a game of streaks in Greensboro tonight.  After leading 22-20 with about 10 minutes to go in the first half, Guilford had one of the worst quarters of basketball I've seen.  The Quakers scored 1 point and trailed the Royals 36-23 at the half.  Then, with the score 43-33 EMU, the Quakers ran off 16 straight to go up 49-43.  It was 59-48 Guilford with about 5 minutes to go when the Royals mounted a comeback ending with a three to tie at 64 with 4.7 seconds to go.  Finally, on the last play of the game, the ball was inbounded to a double-teamed Josh Pittman who dribbled down the right side of the court and launched a looooooong 30-foot three at the buzzer (see link above) - swish! - 67-64 Guilford as Pittman was mobbed on the court.  Sweet!

Pittman finished with 26 (23 in 2nd half) and Hopkins 10, four players in double figures for the Royals.  Guilford improves to 3-1, 1-0 and Eastern Mennonite drops to 4-1, 0-1.  By the way, very impressed with EMU - quick, talented and balanced - they'll give many teams fits this season.  Guilford was in a fight and I feel fortunate to win.
