How do you think SU is enjoying the ODAC ?

No ODAC wins in football/basketball.

Was that the right move for them ? Should the ODAC have been looking elsewhere ? Will they be able to recruit better being in the ODAC.

Baseball is SU's sport, right ?

For travel reasons it was probably the right move for SU.  Whether it was the right move for the ODAC will require a larger sample size than one year.  As you say, baseball may make SU a good add for the ODAC.  Only time will tell.

Algernon, I agree that I like the depth of this HSC team, but I don't think they are the deepest we've had.  1999 and 2003 come to mind for obvious reasons.  The 1999 team in particular was loaded with juniors and seniors who had been through the battles and proven themselves.  This team still has to prove itself some.  I, like you, think they can and will, but we will have to wait and see.  Lynchburg first and then we will approach the next game.

Here's how SU did in the ODAC in fall team sports other than football:

Volleyball: 4-7
Field Hockey: 4-4
Women's Soccer: 6-5-1
Men's Soccer: 1-9-1

They are ranked #23 in the D3baseball.com 2013 pre-season poll.

Mr. Ypsi .... The first-round games are on Thursday, with Friday a travel day before the second-round games on Saturday?

Dave 'd-mac' McHugh

First round on Saturday of the first weekend, second round on Saturday of the third weekend, Sweet 16 on Saturday of the third weekend, and Elite 8 & Final Four in Salem... 15 days later the championship in Atlanta.

Algernon,
New format this year to try to hold the D3 championship with DI championship.  HSC schedule has dates on it for each tournament round.

algernon

Brian ... You remember the 1999 team as having more depth than I do.  I remember a solid 7 players (Grimes, Fox, Garst, Robbins, Harris, Jirak, Hobbs) and then the talent falling off a good bit after that.  In part because Kevin Garst was injured in the National Championship game, T. J. Grimes had to play 45 minutes of that 50-minute game.

I remember the 2003 team as being extraordinarily deep, with Patrick, McKeag, Thompson, and Holman coming off the bench.

Mr. Ypsi

I'm trying to keep an open mind about it, but pretty sure I hope they never do this again.  Instead of a three week tourney, it will be a SIX week tourney.  (And my suspicion is that the title game will be so overshadowed by March Madness that it will be totally unfair to the participants.)

algernon

D-Mac and Brian .... I was totally unaware of the change, assuming that the schedule was the same as always.  Wow!

I agree with your assesment. I think D3 Championship should keep to itself and stay way from The Final Four.
D3 championship game will be played in a huge arena with hardly anyone in the stands. I don't understand what they were thinking. Waiting 15 days to play the championship game is a joke as well. In Salem, the final four was a big deal and all the attention was on the D3 Championship. March Madness will totally take over and overlook the D3 game.

Is D2 championship doing the same ?

I agree with your assessment of the 1999 team's top 7 players.  What you need to remember is that in the regular season, Andy Habenicht, Brett Thompson, Bobby Jackson, Kevin Swann, and Aaron Gibbs got some significant playing time.  I totally agree about Garst's injury which, by the way, resulted in Bobby Jackson playing more in the 99 title game than the game plan would've dictated.  Habenicht was a senior that year, but the others were major contributors on the 1999-2000 team that was undefeated in the regular season.  These players don't stand out on the 99 team because they weren't asked to score but rather do the other things.

I believe both d2 and d3 title games will be across town from the d1 game.

Thanks for your summary, Brian, which revives my memory of some of the other contributors to that fine 1999 team.  Each of the guys you've mentioned was solid, and I particularly remember Jackson playing in the title game as just a freshman.

I think the HSC website has a couple of mistakes, if I now understand the tournament schedule accurately.  The website says:

Mar. 15    vs. NCAA Tournament Third Round    Salem, VA - Salem Civic Center
Mar. 22    NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals
Mar. 23    NCAA Tournament Semifinals

It probably should say:

Mar. 16    vs. NCAA Tournament Third Round
Mar. 22    NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals         Salem, VA - Salem Civic Center
Mar. 23    NCAA Tournament Semifinals         Salem, VA - Salem Civic Center

Would be nice to see mulitple ODAC teams in the tourney. You really think HSC has real chance to host even without winning the ODAC tourney ? That would be great for the program and a big step towards the goal of going deep into the tourney; Final Four ?????

I know, one game at a time and let the rest take care of itself.

Don't forget that there is a one-time change in the format this year - no pods.  There will be 31 host teams in the first round, so as long as they have fewer than five losses, they should host.

Plus, H-SC won't be having an ODAC championship women's team competing with their men for a coveted hosting spot.  Since we ALL know how the home court can affect tournament play this bodes well for H-SC & of course for the ODAC.
