Yesterday this Board was about basketball!

R-MC is headed to Worcester MA for a 7 pm game on Sat.  There is some planning going on for an overnight fan bus trip.  If anyone here is interested & not yet in the pipeline, please contact Laura or Megan in YJC as soon as possible.  The trip to NY was great  - bus seats kind of skimpy but totally on time w/great refreshments & of course, the best possible company.

Go JACKETS!
Hope that trip goes really well.  Best of luck to the Jackets!

Oh yeah, but then I went to the Cabrini Athletics website, where I read the news today, oh boy ... about "George Harrison", who reportedly scored 25 points for the Tigers.

Well, I've Got a Feeling that George would've done even better With a Little Help from his Friends, but it seems that Coach Vick has not yet been able to recruit John, Paul, and Ringo.

Since there is a little bit of time between now and games this weekend, I thought I would pose a question to you all.  What do you all think is the best D-III coaching job in the state of Virginia?  When I say best, take into consideration the following....location of school, budget (salary for coaching staff), facilities, financial aid packaging (most likely a guess), community and alumni support, etc.

How about ranking your best 7 jobs?  Choices are: Averett, Bridgewater, CNU, EMU, E&H, Ferrum, H-S, Lynchburg, Marymount, Mary Washington, RMC, Randolph, Roanoke, Shenandoah, VWC, W&L

I can only answer this by saying it isn't W&L. The facilities are average, forget about financial aid because it isn't going to happen for anything remotely related to athletics (or really anything but proveable need or academics), and community and alumni support is pretty low. There is also almost no history (early 80s) to build from. The upsides are the beautiful school and location, a decent budget, reasonable expectations, and loyalty to coaches that meet those expectations. But I don't think W&L would rank even in the top half of this list, as I think other schools support their programs much more enthusiastically.

Just my own personal ranking of ODAC gyms .... and others' preferences will no doubt differ:

1) Guilford, Hampden-Sydney, Roanoke
2) EMU, VWC
3) Bridgewater, W&L, E&H, Lynchburg, Randolph-Macon
4)
5) Randolph

It seems odd to me, but I have heard that Roanoke is on the verge of building a new one.

If you are going to the R-MC game in Worcester Ma. you had better get directions . It appears the game has been moved to a different site. Assumption College.

1.Hampden Sydney (no title IX, nice facilities and big fan base)
2. VWC (location, facility is really nice and academics aren't that great)
3. CNU (location and really good facilities)
4.Mary Washington (location in the middle of richmond and dc and not to far from maryland and very nice facilities)
5.Randolph Macon (location)
6. Roanoke (decent location but getting that new gym thats being built could really help draw recruits in)
7.  EMU/Marymount (can't really choose marymount has the nicer location to attract recruits but EMU has a bigger fan base and very nice facilites)
The rest: Bridgewater, Lynchburg, Shenendoah, W and L, Ferrum, Averett, Randolph, Emory and Henry

Yes they are just broke ground on it a couple of months ago but won't be ready for a couple of years at the earliest

only odac gym's I 've seen a game in are HSC, RMC & VWC so I'm not qualified.
The hsc job has to be very attractive for these reasons; 1) fan base 2) facilities 3) not an elite academic institution but academics are above average 4) no title 9 5) tradition

That is a bunch to use to your recruiting advantage. Down side is all male enrollment does not appeal to all, location (stuck in Southside, Va) and cost of education.

Good luck to RMC and VWC this weekend. Make the odac proud. If you make it to the round of 16 anything can happen.

Dear Seatfiller - please elaborate on your observation about VWC: "academics aren't that great." And, by the way, you spell it Shenandoah.

Assumption is down the street from WPI... shouldn't throw too many people off.

Sorry I was in a hurry and obviously it was a big deal to spell Shenandoah right  ::), you guys got to stop getting so butt hurt when someone says something negative about your school, anyway I've played with and know some basktball guys that attended VWC or are attending VWC  and I know for a fact most of their grades in high school were terrible, so I guess I should reword it and say that its easier to get kids into the school (admission) than saying their academics aren't that great.

DeWayneCarter

Most of the guys you knew that played at VWC, or most of the VWC roster had terrible high school grades? Just trying to get a better understanding of your quote.

And the best job in VA is CNU no doubt. Great facilities, in a very fertile recruiting area (757, an hr away from Richmond and 2 hrs away from the DC metro area) and its also a state school. There is no reason that CNU's basketball team shouldn't be one of the best in the nation year in and year out and it seems they are on their way. The late CJ Woolum made sure they had the facilities and the current coach has them back in the NCAA Tournament.

jdubyadubya

Dear Seatfiller - "butt hurt," that's a new one on me. Please be careful about what you say about other people and places when in fact you cannot verify your remarks.
